SCHUMACHER, MEDLEN, CONNOLLY AND TREBLE EARN VICTORIES AT LUCAS OIL NHRA NATIONALS

Top Fuel -- Tony Schumacher, 4.615 seconds, 321.96 mph def. David Grubnic, 4.606 seconds, 317.49 mph.

(8-15-2004) - Funny Car driver Eric Medlen and Pro Stock's David Connolly each earned the first victory of their careers Sunday at the 23rd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.

Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel) and Craig Treble (Pro Stock Bike) also earned the win in their respective categories at the $1.6 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event.

Medlen, a long-time crew member in the John Force Racing program, started his professional career this season. He earned the victory over three-time champion Gary Scelzi. Medlen turned in a 4.999-second pass at 302.62 mph in his Castrol Syntec Ford Mustang, beating Scelzi's 5.286 at 247.66 in his Oakley Dodge Stratus.

"I didn't see Scelzi for a while, then I saw way too much of him, then we started catching him and by the time I got to the lights, I didn't know who had won," Medlen said. "I know it was close. If hope had anything to do with it, I might have edged him right there."

Funny Car -- Eric Medlen, Ford Mustang, 4.999, 302.62 def. Gary Scelzi, Dodge Stratus, 5.286, 247.66.

Medlen spent eight years working on the cars before he got the chance to drive one. He has credited his team members for helping him with the transition to the driver's seat.

"It didn't really hit me that I won my first race until the crew guys got out of the (return vehicle) at the other end," Medlen said. "We've been through so much over the years and they're the closest people to my heart. When you look in their eyes and see the joy in there, it hits you.
"And then dad (crew chief John Medlen) came up and the tears came. All my life I've just wanted to be part of whatever he was doing and now we've won a race together and that's forever."

Connolly has been to four final rounds this season, including the last three events. The 21-year-old beat the defending Pro Stock champion and current points leader, Greg Anderson. Connolly earned the win with a 6.799 pass at 203.31 in his Bullet Motorsports Chevy Cavalier to top Anderson's 6.818 at 202.97 in his Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac Grand Am.
Connolly has earned wins in the sportsman categories before, but the first pro victory has added special significance. He became the 50th driver in NHRA history to post a Pro Stock victory.

Pro Stock -- Dave Connolly, Chevy Cavalier, 6.799, 203.31 def. Greg Anderson, Pontiac Grand Am, 6.818, 202.97.

"I've always dreamed of this day but I never really thought it would happen," Connolly said. "Even winning sportsman races, this is just completely different. It's unbelievable. And to be the 50th winner in the class with the 50th U.S. Nationals (in Indianapolis) coming up, that makes it even more special. Maybe 50 is my lucky number."

Anderson has been nearly unbeatable this season, earning 12 victories in 14 final rounds in the first 16 events of the season. Anderson had beaten Connolly three times before Sunday.
"To beat Greg, and on top of that to drive around him, makes this very special," Connolly said. "He's the guy right now and any time you race him you have to be totally on your game. You have to be perfect. Even today he left on me. He just picked the wrong lane, I think.

"The thing is those other finals got me used to the pressure because the nervousness was gone this time. I just wanted to win so bad."

Schumacher used a 4.615 run at 321.96 to earn his 17th career win and sixth of the season in the U.S. Army dragster. The Top Fuel points leader beat David Grubnic's 4.606 at 317.49 in the Red Line Oil dragster.

"We sure worked hard for this one," Schumacher said. "The first two runs in qualifying something was clearly wrong with the car. Then we made a good pass in Round 3. Then the ignition went out in Round 4. You just can't give up three of four passes like that and feel real good heading into race day, especially with the new wing angle and nitro percentage deal.

Pro Stock Bike -- Craig Treble, Suzuki, 7.199, 183.00 def. Angelle Savoie, Suzuki, 7.395, 150.10.

"Then in Round 1 (of eliminations) they got on the radio after my burnout and said the blower belt was shredding itself to pieces. Alan [Johnson, crew chief] said to just go for it and we were totally lucky to get that win. After that, I've said it before, you can't give Alan too many chances or he'll rip your heart out and that's what happened."

Grubnic has been in six career final rounds, including four this season. He has yet to earn a professional win.

"Poor Dave," Schumacher said. "I could hear him and feel him and I thought I even saw his nose a few times, but this one was mine. He'll get his, believe me."

Treble earned the eighth victory of his career with a win over three-time champion Angelle Savoie. Treble went 7.199 at 183.00 on his Matco Tools Suzuki to beat Savoie's 7.395 at 150.10 on her U.S. Army Suzuki.

Treble had been 0-for-3 in final rounds this season.

"We knew what we were up against and I'm not even sure we thought we had a chance," Treble said. "She ran a 7.13 in the semis and we'd struggled all day except one round. But the Vance & Hines guys came over and told me I had the power to run a good pass and we got after it."

Treble's first career victory came at Brainerd in 1999.

"I got my first win here and I've been to three finals here so I love this place. I've been doing this since 1998 so any place where you have three final-round appearances is going to be special."

The next NHRA POWERade series event is the 17th annual O'Reilly Auto Parts Mid-South NHRA Nationals at Memphis Motorsports Park in Memphis, Ten., Aug. 20-22.

SATURDAY - KALITTA, WILKERSON, ANDERSON AND BROWN EARN TOP QUALIFYING SPOTS AT LUCAS OIL NATIONALS

Greg Anderson paced the Pro Stock field with a 6.742-second pass at 204.79 mph in his Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac Grand Am..

(8-14-2004) - Greg Anderson put on a show for the hometown crowd Saturday, earning the 29th No. 1 qualifying position of his career during the 23rd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.

Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Tim Wilkerson (Funny Car) and Antron Brown (Pro Stock Bike) also earned the No. 1 qualifying position in their respective categories at the $1.6 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event.

Anderson, a Duluth native, paced the Pro Stock field with a 6.742-second pass at 204.79 mph in his Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac Grand Am. The time was good enough for a track record - the 16th such record this season - but he wasn't satisfied with the performance on the track.

"We are struggling with the cars a little, to be honest," Anderson said. "We made some mistakes and we can't make those same mistakes again. These low qualifiers and race wins are not easy.

"I'm actually not proud with the runs we made today because it wasn't up to KB Racing standards. Hopefully we can get it figured out. I'm not doubting my guys and I would even bet that we'll be just fine tomorrow."

Anderson can tie 12-time NHRA champion John Force in the win column on Sunday. Anderson has 12 wins so far this season and the record for wins in a season for all pro categories is 13, set by Force in 1996.

"It's just an honor to even have a chance to have a record with Force," Anderson said. "It's like the Olympics. Even if you don't come away with a medal, just being in that elite group is amazing."

Kalitta drove his Mac Tools dragster to a 4.532 pass at 324.51 for his 19th career No. 1 position in Top Fuel.

"It warmed up a little from yesterday so we just tried to make sure we could get the car down the track," Kalitta said. "We wanted to get a feel for what we could expect to do tomorrow. We need to go rounds and keep pace or make up some ground on Tony (Schumacher). You never know what those guys will do and you can't anticipate anything one way or the other."

Kalitta said having a three-car team has been valuable on race day. The other two cars in the Kalitta Racing stable, Scott Kalitta and David Grubnic, are qualified second and fourth, respectively.

"The three-car thing is really starting to pay dividends," Doug Kalitta said. "You certainly get plenty of information with three cars running and the guys have all figured our how to work together. It's good to see."

Antron Brown earned the eighth top qualifying position of his career when he rode his U.S. Army Suzuki to a 7.091 run at 187.52, setting the track elapsed time record.

Wilkerson took the top honors in Funny Car, driving his Levi, Ray & Shoup Chevy Monte Carlo to the No. 1 spot with a run of 4.812 at 319.67.

Wilkerson was the runner-up to Gary Densham in 2003. Densham qualified second on Saturday with a 4.813 run at 320.43.

"We just piddled around today because it got hotter," Wilkerson said. "I'm having fun running next to my buddy Gary Densham. We raced in the finals here last year and he got me by five thousandths of a second and he's been giving it to me pretty good ever since.

"I told him he could win all the rounds (during qualifying) but I was going to win them (in eliminations)."

Brown earned the eighth top qualifying position of his career when he rode his U.S. Army Suzuki to a 7.091 run at 187.52, setting the track elapsed time record. Brown has three wins at Brainerd (2000, '01, '03) and is aiming to defend his title.

"We usually shine here in Brainerd and I love it," Brown said. "The new track is so awesome now. I'd put it right up there with Englishtown as the best tracks for the bikes. It used to be really hard to drive down this track but now it's so nice and smooth, both lanes are great. It makes for great racing."

Final eliminations are set for 11 a.m. Sunday.

First-round pairings for professional eliminations Sunday for the 23rd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway, the 16th of 23 events in the $50 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series. Pairings based on results in qualifying, which ended Saturday.

FRIDAY - HOMETOWN DRIVER LEADS THE WAY IN QUALIFYING AT LUCAS OIL NHRA NATIONALS

Greg Anderson set both ends of the track record in his Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac Grand Am with a 6.759-second pass at 203.89 mph.

(8-13-2004) -- Duluth native Greg Anderson drove to the top of the Pro Stock order at his home track Friday during the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway.

Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Tim Wilkerson (Funny Car) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Bike) also led qualifying in their respective categories the $1.6 million NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series event.

Anderson set both ends of the track record in his Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac Grand Am with a 6.759-second pass at 203.89 mph. Anderson is the defending champion at Brainerd.

"It's always great returning to Brainerd to race," Anderson said. "I have so many great memories at this track. I am happy that we are at the top of the qualifying order after one day, but to be honest, we made some mistakes. We have a lot of room for improvement for the next qualifying session and if we can correct those mistakes, it might be an even more special homecoming.

"After all of these years I think we have a home field advantage."

Doug Kalitta earned the provisional No. 1 qualifying award in Top Fuel with a 4.532 run at 324.51 in the Mac Tools dragster..

Anderson is the current Pro Stock points leader and is looking to clinch his second consecutive NHRA POWERade Pro Stock championship. After 15 of 23 races so far, Anderson holds a 568-point lead over the No. 2 driver in the category - his teammate and fellow Minnesota driver, Jason Line.

Line, a native of Wright, Minn., is qualified in the No. 2 spot in the order with a 6.766 at 203.46.
"It's been an amazing season so far," Anderson said. "We are hoping to set some records and win our second championship and Jason is working toward rookie of the year honors. It's been a great season for a couple of Minnesota guys."

Kalitta earned the provisional No. 1 qualifying award in Top Fuel with a 4.532 run at 324.51 in the Mac Tools dragster.

"I was hoping that we were going to run a .57 or something close to it," Kalitta said. "That was a big surprise. The track seems to be great, especially with these conditions.

"(Crew chief) Rahn Tobler is doing a great job figuring things out. One of his top missions was to improve the consistency of this team and that is something he has delivered to this program. I'm having a lot more fun staying closer to the top of the pack and having a shot at the championship."

Wilkerson went to the top of the Funny Car category with a pass of 4.812 at 319.67, setting both track records in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Chevy Monte Carlo.

Wilkerson went to the top of the Funny Car category with a pass of 4.812 at 319.67, setting both track records in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Chevy Monte Carlo.

"Fred [Mandoline, co-crew chief] got on the radio and said, 'Dude, you're No. 1 and Densham went 4.81 right next to you,' " Wilkerson said. "I thought, what did we run, and he was already telling me 4.812 at 319. That's big for us. We've been having trouble dropping cylinders but the 319 told me all eight stayed lit that time and that's why we had the number.

"I thought we'd be close to low E.T. but not a 4.81. Some times these things surprise you. Even ol' Fred told me I surprised him because he didn't like the clutch set-up I had in there."

Hines rode his Vance & Hines Screamin' Eagle Harley-Davidson to a 7.130 run at 187.16 to pace Pro Stock Bike.

Andrew Hines rode his Vance & Hines Screamin' Eagle Harley-Davidson to a 7.130 run at 187.16 to pace Pro Stock Bike.

"The track conditions were much better during the second session," Hines said. "We've overcome a couple of obstacles lately and found a little more horsepower. My dad has been working real hard and we have a couple of things going on that should get these V-Rods flying back on top. I think we are going to make improvements in the next couple of weeks but it's nice to have a couple of decent runs for both of the bikes here in Brainerd."

Qualifying continues at 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Final eliminations are set for 11 a.m. on Sunday.
