Mental Torque
No Pain, No Gain ……
By Mike Ashley

T here can be no doubt that procrastination is the kryptonite for accomplishment. So why is it that we procrastinate?

Studies show us that humans are motivated by two things. The first is the need to avoid pain and the second is the drive for pleasure. These are the two motivating factors when we make decisions as we progress through our lives.

Now on its face this may seem like a simple concept, but don’t be fooled it’s not. You see the real question is why you associate either of these feelings to an action. Why do you perceive pain or pleasure when thinking of someone, or action, chore, thought or just about anything which requires your consideration? This process of linking is called nuero-associative conditioning. In other words your mind is conditioned to perceive an action, event, person or thing as painful or pleasurable.

Successful people have an acute awareness of this process and are constantly monitoring their associative thinking. It’s important to know that how you feel about something is up to you. You can change it or leave it but you need to be aware of it. For example if you associate eating ice cream with pleasure because you love ice cream at the moment you consider eating ice cream you will gobble it up. However, you can still love to eat ice cream and associate it with pain. Say for instance you are on a diet to lose weight for a special occasion or to improve your on track performance. If every time you went for ice cream you imagined the pain of not fitting in your clothes or being over the weight minimums and losing a race you would consider eating ice cream painful and stop.

The next step is to understand why we consider something which is usually good for us painful. The truth is it is the fear of failure. We have been conditioned in our society at a young age to be careful not to fail. The problem is as we progress we translate that into not to try! Not trying is failure because the outcome is certain.

Failure is a key component in the success equation. Failure is nothing more then a learning experience. Hall of Famer’s fail way more then they succeed. Think about it, a Hall of Fame hitter has a .300 batting average. That mean he fails 7 of 10 tries. Failure is only failure when as humans we do not extract the learning experience from the event. When you fail correctly you grow. This association will help you to attack and conquer fearful situations in your life and avoid procrastination or worse elimination.

Here we are as I have parked my championship Pro Mod team to jump into arguably the toughest class in drag racing right now. We didn’t in Pomona. I got calls from friends and fans alike offering their reassurances and condolences. Thanks but no thanks. I know I am lucky to be in my position and I plan on failing my way to the top. I’ll see you there. That is unless you decide not to join me.

Expect to win.
