SATURDAY FINAL - With Just the Finals Left to go, Mother Nature Spoils ADRL Party

(4-15-2006) - The severe weather predicted for the St. Louis area never developed, but there were enough light rain showers and thunderstorms in the vicinity of Gateway International to force event organisers to halt proceedings before the final rounds could be contested.

Pro Extreme would have seen a shootout between Quain Stott and Bil Clanton, while the Pro Nitrous tilt would have been between Todd Tutterow and Burton Auxier.

It has yet to be decided if the finals will be run in conjunction with qualifying for the next event in Memphis or if the points and purse money will be split up between the semifinalists in each class.

Here is a recap of the elimination rounds through the semifinals:

SATURDAY NOTEBOOK - Performance records smashed, favorites suffer and real new car blues

Pro Extreme Eliminations

The Upset - Mike Neal, who qualified No. 3 with a 3.949 at 182.26 and was the current Pro Extreme points leader, left oil on the track during his burn-out. This allowed Troy Critchley, who qualified No. 14, to advance to the next round of competition. According to Neal’s team owner Don Stroud, “A two dollar part killed us. A seal on the blower spout broke and oil came out of the spout. Boom, it went down on the track. I think we had the car to beat this weekend, I really do.”

No Repeat for Hernandez - The winning streak is over for Josh Hernandez and Dr. Moon’s Rage. Hernandez, who went to the final round at the last ADRL race in Houston and had a big win in Houston during the AMS / RPM Depot Pro Mod Challenge, went out in round two against John Lynam.

Despite being very consistent all weekend, Hernandez got a little out of shape during his run. “We were trying to run a number. Maybe we just had too much for the track and maybe there was a little driver error,” said Hernandez. “I was a little bit late on the tree. We’re going to pack it up and try again next weekend. We are going to Rockingham for the IHRA race next weekend. We’re looking forward to that. We will bring out the AMS / TLR Camaro once again and see what happens.”

The Record is Set! - What a weekend for Jason Scruggs. Scruggs qualified No. 1 in Pro Extreme with a hefty 3.897 at 194.30 MPH. He backed it up in round two with a 3.872, 194.63 MPH. “It feels good but it will feel better if we can go out and do it two more times,” said Scruggs. “We hurt the motor a little bit, so we’ll see what happens.”

Pro Nitrous Eliminations

A Long Way to Come Just to Wreck Your Car -
Pat Stoken and his beautiful '68 Camaro came all the way from Eureka, Montana, to race the Fatheadz.com ADRL Drags.

On Saturday morning, the Tim McAmis-built Camaro was selected as "Best Appearing" by ADRL staff. Unfortunately, that wasn't going to be the case for very long.

In the first round of eliminations Stoken got out of shape towards the end of the run and lost control of his car, putting it into the wall. He did not want to comment on the incident, but his opponent Johnny Pilcher is just thankful both he and Stoken are okay. According to Pilcher, “I tell you somebody looked out for me because earlier in the day I hung my parachutes up - I only had one. If had two parachutes he would have been in the side of me, so it was a blessing in disguise. Anyway, I knew nothing happened. I stopped on the other end and I saw lights flashing. I turned around and saw the fire truck and I knew what had happened. The best thing about it is Pat is in good shape.”

No. 2 Out in Round Two - Aaron Hodges and his '63 Corvette could not get it done in round two. Due to mechanical difficulties, Hodges was pushed back before the race ever began. "think a nitrous solenoid stuck," he said. "When my crew chief turned the bottles on, it popped and that was it. We gave it our best shot. I think we will go to Memphis but that may be it.”

Auxier Keeps the Momentum Going -
Going low for the weekend in Pro Nitrous, Burton Auxier is on kill mode. Having already set the track E.T. record for a nitrous car, Auxier keeps improving each round. Folks in the pits want to know if he can he keep it going for two more rounds.

Tell Us What You Really Think - After a weekend plagued with lengthy track clean-ups, Christmas Tree problems and a rain delay, eliminations finally got under way. Mid-way through the first round of Pro Extreme, Mike Neal dropped oil during his burn-out, causing another long clean-up.

As this was going on, officials demanded that all drivers and crew remain off the track, a decision that caused some ill feelings, to say the least. Hugh Scott was one of the aforementioned drivers inspecting the racing surface. When he was told to get off the track, the man from Alabama was quick to respond. “F*%$# you! I’m the one who has to drive down the son of a b#*%@ and I’m going to look at it.”

When Scott was asked about the incident, he explained he wasn’t in the lane being cleaned-up; he was walking the center line looking for additional oil. "I can understand being out in the track walking down it, but I was on the white line,” he said.

And Yet Another Delay - Once race officials seemed to get the electrical difficulties sorted out, another delay started. Just as the Pro Nitrous cars were to begin the second round of qualifying, rain showers poured down on Gateway International Raceway. The rain delay will cause the ADRL more precious time in their Pro Mod program and subsequently force the loss of the third and final qualifier.

Pro Nitrous Qualifying

Still on the Outs - Shannon “Ice Man” Jenkins was still on the outside looking in after the second and final qualifying session. Normally Jenkins will do what it takes to get in. “We are just off our normal deal,” said Jenkins.

“We’ve got a whole new menu we’re trying to get sorted out. We’re looking kind-of like idiots, but once we get it all sorted out they won’t think we’re idiots. We’ve been working on this stuff now since January at the shop. When you get to the race track it’s a different deal and when you change your program any it throws you a curve and you’ve got to keep beating it up until you figure it out. Once we get it figured out it will be bad for the other boys."

The Success Continues -
Just two weeks ago Burton Auxier had a nice weekend in AMS competition in Houston, going to the semifinals. Here at the ADRL, his success seems to still be with him. Going low for the weekend, Auxier ran a 4.04 at 181.31 mph on Saturday. According to Auxier, “we had the motor back in Virginia this week and had it all freshen up. Everybody’s been working real hard on it. We just hit the right combination. Hopefully we can do a little bit more.”

Pro Extreme Qualifying

It’s a Mad, Mad, World! - Frankie “The Mad Man” Taylor found success in Kennedale, Texas, just last night. After winning the race, Taylor and crew packed up and headed all the way to Madison, hoping to repeat Friday’s success.

“I don’t know if I’m mad; I’m just stupid,” said Taylor. “Insane, huh? We’ve done it before. We went to South Carolina last time; this is a little closer. We’re hoping to make a good lap here then go back to the motel and take showers. If we don’t make it down good right here, we have to go back and work on the car.”

Unfortunately for Taylor and crew, the third qualifying session was cancelled due to rain, so his long trip did not produce results.

Record Breaker - Jason Scruggs is out for blood this weekend. Going low yesterday, Scruggs produced a possible record-breaking low E.T. and MPH of 3.897 at 194.30. The farmer from Mississippi has certainly been impressive in his 63’ Corvette at the Fatheadz.com ADRL Drags.

Long, Lost Friends - Dave Wood of AMS Staff Leasing found his time at the Fatheadz.com ADRL Drags to be a little nostalgic when he was reunited with a long-lost hometown friend. According to Wood, “I haven’t seen him in 35 years. We graduated High School together in Sykes, Missouri - a little town in the southeastern part of the state. He’s been on the AWOL list - I’ve been looking for him for a while. He lives in St. Charles and works here in the St. Louis area and I got him out to a drag race. He hasn’t been to a drag race since the 1960s. We are here for a great day of racing.”

In regards to the AMS and Dr. Moon’s Rage cars, Wood said, “We’re not going to change too much. The weather is going to be a little tougher today but they are ready. They are pretty much going to stay with the same tune-up.”

- Let there be light - please! - The electrical problems continued on Saturday for Kenny Nowling and the Flowmaster ADRL. In a repeat of last night, the Christmas Tree failed to work in the left lane. According to Nowling,

“Really, it’s an issue they [Gateway International Raceway] apparently had with the tree two weeks ago. I’m obviously frustrated beyond words that it wasn’t addressed before we got here; they thought they fixed it. It was no one’s fault in particular but they should have had somebody here on staff. As we grow, we learn and we know that we need to add more people for different positions. Right now my big concern is to get though the rest of the day with no problems and God willing we will.”

FRIDAY NOTEBOOK – Green cars; Hernandez one-two punch and there’s no lane-changing in drag racing

(4-14-2006) - Hot, Hot, Hot – In sunny St. Louis, Pro Mod action was as hot as the blazing sun.  In the heat of the day, cars were struggling to get down the track during testing.  However, when the sun went down and qualifying was underway, the stars of the ADRL were shining bright and running some very impressive numbers.  Despite some great runs the evening was not without problems.

Mid-way through Nitrous qualifying, a nasty oil down caused officials a lengthy clean-up.  Just as action was heating back-up the Christmas Tree and computer system went down.  This caused another very substantial delay forcing some drivers to sit in the staging lanes for a couple of hours just to make a run.  Although the problem was fixed it was only half-way.   Officials could only get one side of the tree to work only allowing for single car passes for most of the Extreme class.   Look to Torco’s CompetitionPlus.com tomorrow to see if race officials were able to get their problems fixed.

Finally! - Joey Martin and team T.A.R.E. have endured a plethora of problems this year in AMS Pro Mod but his trouble has not followed him to the ADRL.  Martin finally made his way down the track in his Outlaw Shelby.

“Things felt good – little lazy but we’ll do good in the heat though,” said Martin.

One of the longtime attributes for Martin’s crewchief Chuck Ford has been his tune-up in warm weather conditions. This dates back to his days as Mike Ashley’s tuner.

It’s Not Easy Being Green - Bennie McDonald in his freshly painted, green, 53 Corvette has one major goal for the weekend.  His hopes it keep his car green during the race.  Unfortunately, in the past when McDonald has enjoyed a fresh paint job, he has managed to ruin it early on.  Luckily, he has made it past the first round of qualifying with all his paint in tact.

One-Two Punch - Pro Modified racer Josh Hernandez is bringing a one-two punch into this weekend’s Fatheadz.com Gateway Drags, literally. The veteran driver from Conroe, Texas, brought his AMS Rage Pro Extreme 1957 Chevrolet into Gateway International Raceway looking for the opportunity to climb one spot into the top ranking within the point standings. Hernandez also leads the NHRA AMS Pro Modified Challenge championship chase.

This weekend’s event provides the perfect opportunity for Hernandez pull off the unparalleled feat. No driver has ever led both the NHRA and ADRL championship series.

“We certainly don’t take things for granted, but we can’t ignore where we are at,” Hernandez said. “The ’57 Chevy is running really well and we want to take advantage of it.  I like the progress it is making.

“This is going to be a warm-weather event so it will become a tuning challenge and one we are ready for.”

Hernandez is accustomed to warm climates being from Houston, Texas. How ironic for him that his two best finishes have come at Houston during each series. At Houston Motorsports Park in March, Hernandez stormed to a Pro Extreme runner-up during the ADRL Dragpalooza. Just two weeks ago, Hernandez won the NHRA Spring Nationals AMS Pro Modified Challenge crown.

Hernandez has raced once at Gateway and reached the quarter-finals during last year’s NHRA Sears Craftsman Nationals.

We Do Not Change Lanes in Drag Racing - Travis Swearingen in his Junk Yard Willy’s got out of shape towards the end of his first qualifying run and ended-up in the other lane.  Swearingen narrowly missed both his opponent and the wall in the mishap.

“We went out there and started shaking and I stayed in it too long.  It got sideways and sideways again and crossed-up.  I had to save it in the other lane.  We are going to change our clutch around for tomorrow – change the tires and see if we can get down the track.”

Oh What a Run! - Jason Scruggs and his ’63 Corvette went low for the night.  Running an impressive 3.89 at 194.30 miles per hour, Scruggs is showing he is the man to beat.

“Tomorrow is a new day and the sun is going to be out but we’re just happy to be No. 1 because it pays a low qualifier bonus – we’re happy anytime you can be No. 1 and run good,” Scruggs said.  “Like I said, tomorrow is a new day, the sun is going to be out and hopefully we’ll be lucky enough to make it down the track tomorrow and do well.  We’ll take what we learned tonight, we realize the track is going to be a little greasier tomorrow and we will make a few adjustments just see what it does tomorrow.”  Scruggs feels the track could have taken more and hopes to be able to step up his number tomorrow.

Tutterow No.1 - Running a 4.08 at 179.06 MPH, Todd Tutterow in his 2002 Mustang showed the class how it’s done.  With heavy hitter competitors such as Shannon Jenkins sitting on the outside looking in after round one of qualifying, Tuttrow made it look easy.

“We’ve got two cars here and we didn’t get to run the other one, so we want to concentrate on it,” said Tutterow, “The car felt real good today; it’s a real nice racetrack.”

He’s Back!   - Successful AMS Pro Mod driver Zach Barklage is back in competition with his brother Cody.  Although Zach didn’t get to make a qualifying pass today, he is optimistic with the progress his team is making with his new car.

“It’s just a new car.  We’ve got a few bugs to work-out but we’ll get it,” said Barklage.  “The car seems to be doing alright the first weekend out, so we’ll see what happens.  We just want to get down the track and after that we’ll have to see what happens.”  Despite Zach’s problems with his new ’57 Bel Air, Cody did well today qualifying his “legal” Pro Mod at 4.09, 180.07 MPH.

PREVIEW - FLOWMASTER ADRL makes first visit to Gateway

(4-13-2006) — The FLOWMASTER American Drag Racing League makes its debut in the St. Louis metropolitan area this weekend with an event that could be  pivotal to a number of drivers’ championship plans.

The inaugural ADRL Fatheadz.com Gateway Drags, the third of seven events on the 2006 ADRL schedule, represents the halfway point of the league’s Battle for the Belts competition (which actually began at last year’s season-ending event in Kennedale, Texas). Only the top eight points-earners in both the Pro Extreme and Pro Nitrous classes are guaranteed a spot in the Battle for the Belts eliminators (Oct. 13 in Kennedale), which will determine the 2006 ADRL champions.

For drivers already in the top eight of their respective standings, the Gateway Drags represent a chance to solidify their positions. For those currently on the outside looking in, the event at Gateway Int’l Raceway is a chance to move up in the standings before the pressure really begins to build later in the season.

The Gateway Drags begin Friday with open testing for all entries and, for the first time in the organization’s 10-event history,  a Friday night qualifying session. Two more qualifying sessions will follow on Saturday before eliminations in both Pro Extreme and Pro Nitrous get under way at 4 p.m. local time. In addition to the best side-by-side Outlaw Pro Mod racing in the country, the event will also feature a Saturday concert by country artist Jason Aldean and exhibition runs from both jet-powered cars and wheelstanders on Friday and Saturday.

Entering the event, Valdosta winner Mike Neal — the only driver to qualify for every event in ADRL history — leads the Pro Extreme standings with 919 points, nearly 200 more than second-place Joshua Hernandez’s 726 (ADRL drivers receive 100 points for qualifying, plus 100 points per round-win). John Lynam, the 2005 ADRL Pro Extreme champion, holds down the eighth and final spot in the Battle for the Belts competition with 513 points, but he has less than a one-round cushion over pursuers Jason Scruggs and Chip King.

In Pro Nitrous, Johnny Pilcher (731 points), Keith Baker (729), and Ken Thomas (715) are virtually inseparable at the top of the standings. A dogfight for the final two ADRL world championship spots features Randy Weatherford in seventh place (428), Burton Auxier in eighth (426), and James Hancock and Shannon Jenkins tied for ninth at 416.

A number of Midwest-based Pro Mod drivers are expected to compete at Gateway, among them Pro Mod legend Bill Kuhlmann , Travis Swearingen, who will make his ADRL debut, and the two-car Barklage Racing team.

The two ADRL events this season have combined for the maximum possible eight different finalists. Joey Martin (Pro Extreme) and Mike Castellana (Pro Nitrous) were the winners at the most recent ADRL event,  March 4-5 in Houston.
