NORTH CENTRAL DIVISION BURNDOWN AT SUNDOWN SATURDAY NOTEBOOK

At the crack of dawn an unwelcome visitor descended upon Route 66 Raceway. Mid-summer thunderstorms. Coming in waves, three time track crew would make progress, only to be rebuffed by Mother Nature. Eventually she gave up, and the program got underway at 3 PM, albeit in abbreviated form. Most classes would be limited to two rather than the customary three qualifying sessions.
Super Gas is the province of ultra-sophisticated race cars with fiberglass bodied roadsters seeming to dominate. Yet one area racer showed up with real vintage iron, and Griffith, Indiana’s Dave Wesolowski and his father “Wes” Wesolowski dropped jaws with their steel bodied 1963 Chevy Biscayne. Powered by a 482” W-Block built by the late Lamar Walden and manually shifted by a G Force 5 speed, the 3500 lb. classic would be entered for the first time in open competition. Dave and Wes chased some bugs and ultimately made a Round 1 exit.

Chasing points across the country can be rewarding, and extremely challenging. Chris Demke and the Maddern Racing TAD crew were certainly challenged. The Western Region hitter and past National champ missed Q1 on Friday. With one shot at getting in the field, the car failed to fire at the ready line. After, the crew determined that the ignition management system had failed.

Is that an altered in Top Dragster? Yes it is! Norwalk, Ohio’s Michael Scheel qualified this blown beast #21 in the Quick 32, but fell to Rob Moser in Round 1 of eliminations on Saturday night.

Marina Anderson and her crew of family and friends made a two clean qualifiying runs, and continues to see improvement. Falling a a little short of getting in the Quick 8, Anderson did what any enthusiastic drag racer would do. Helping a fellow competitor that did make the field. Here Marina dives into the bottom end of Brandon Gecco’s blown HEMI.

Benjamin Board held onto the top Qualifier position on Saturday afternoon and earned a Big Check for his efforts. In the first round of eliminations that night, Board would advance past Curt Fredrich.

Matt Sackman had the second best run of Q2 on Saturday afternoon, but held on the the Number 1 position, ahead of his Randy Meyer Racing teammate Julie Nataas. The cylder head man on Antron Brown’s DSR/Matco Tools Top Fuel Dragster is learning clutch set-up both from notable mentors at DSR and RMR. Sackman would earn his first round win in TAD on Saturday with a victory over John Paul Guitierrez.

The long night ended with the Burndown at Sundown, Route 66 Raceway’s night of fun and fire. Here is Barry Richter and the Hypersonic jet Funny Car getting set to make a sub 300 MPH run.
