During the 1986 season, one of the marquee event on the IHRA tour was the traditional Popular Hot Rodding Nationals at U.S. 131 Dragway in Martin, Mich. This specialty event had been contested under both the IHRA and NHRA sanction over the years. This represented the final season for IHRA with Winston title sponsorship. The IHRA fielded three professional divisions that year: Pro Funny Car, Alcohol Funny Car and Mountain Motor Pro Stock.
