It's hard to imagine a career where a winning driver never created animocity amongst his peers. Likewise, in this day and age of sensitivity, it's equally difficult to imagine a drag racer who never had a bad thing to say about anyone else.
Darrell Russell was this man.

Darrell Russell was destined for Top Fuel stardom Anyone could gauge his immense potential.
Almost before his career high gear, though, the sport was cruelly robbed of his certain greatness.
Handpicked to succeed driver/owner Joe Amato, then the winningest driver in NHRA Top Fuel history, Russell immediately proved to be the perfect choice. He won his debut as a Top Fuel competitor -- only the third driver ever to accomplish that feat -- and over the next 3 1/2 years, he charged to five more victories with 11 additional final-round appearances.

Ontario Motor Speedway was a motorsport venue located in Ontario, California. It was the first and only automobile racing facility built to accommodate major races sanctioned by all of the four dominant racing sanctioning bodies: USAC (and now IndyCar Series) for open-wheel oval car races; NASCAR for a 500-mile (800 km) oval stock car races; NHRA for drag races; and FIA for Formula One road course races. Constructed in less than two years, the track opened in August 1970 and was considered state of the art at the time.

There's only one Richard Tharp, the original drag racing party animal. Sit back and listen to the story of the day the Feds were after Tharp, the driver who made famous the line "A Star I Are, A Saint I Ain't." The authorities followed Tharp to the drag strip, when he tried his best to evade induction into the Army for Vietnam War. He might have won on the drag strip, but this day he didn't win against Uncle Sam.

Travel back to a time when Dragsters and Funny Cars did dry hops. Pro Stockers pulled the levers. This was a time when drag racing's video coverage was more about tape delay and syndication and ESPN was still in its infancy.
CompetitionPlus.tv, via Youtube.com, visits U.S. 131 Dragway [Martin, Mich.] for the Popular Hot Rodding Nationals during the 1980 season.
This event wasn't a national event on the NHRA Winston World Championsip Series. It was instead an NHRA Division 3 points race and a staple of the drag racing "must run" events. In this event, professional drivers gathered points towards the chamnpionhip. Ironically this event was staged on the same weekiend as the NHRA Molson Grandnational in Montreal, Quebec.
Many of the teams raced both events on this weekend.
