Joe Gibbs Racing’s Toyota Camrys are shifting into high gear.

JGR's momentum from Kentucky carried over to Friday afternoon's qualifying session at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The newest member of JGR, Carl Edwards, won the pole for Sunday's 5 Hour Energy 301 with a speed of 135.164 mph and a fast lap of 28.179 seconds. In addition to Edwards' pole run, all three of his JGR teammates qualified inside the top eight for Sunday's race.

Edwards, driving the No. 19 Sport Clips Toyota this weekend, knows how important it is to start up front at New Hampshire.

"It's a huge opportunity," Edwards said. "This track is tough, for me it has been, very tough to pass at this track so in qualifying we knew it would be important and after the first couple of laps of practice I knew we had a pretty fast race car. Qualifying went well; we tried to put as few of laps as we could on the tires. It was hard to sit there in 19th in the first session and not go again. I give a lot of credit to (crew chief) Darian (Grubb) for being able to gamble like that, we very well could have been 25th and wishing we would have gone again. The whole group at JGR has been good the last couple of weeks and working really well together."

"Kentucky was huge, obviously, and to come here and for all of us to be this fast was great. I'm really excited about the race."

The top qualifying spot is the 14th of Edwards' Sprint Cup career but his first at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and his first as a member of Joe Gibbs Racing

Edwards edged out Joey Logano's 28.209 second lap for the top spot. Joey Logano, who began his career racing for Joe Gibbs Racing, finished in second place to JGR's Kyle Busch in last week's race at Kentucky.

Logano, driving the No. 22 Shell Pennzoil Ford, won last Fall's race at New Hampshire but admits the success didn't come easy.

"For the longest time in my career, this was my toughest race track," Logano said. "I felt like I just got beat everytime and didn't understand why. You know you keep trying different things and different setups, different driving styles and all these different things. It's not just one thing that clicks off where I say 'that's it'. It's a lot of different things where eventually if you take a little bit of this technique and a little bit of this that worked that one time, take a little bit of this that didn't work and do something different. You keep improving and it's turned into a good race track for our team. Which is a lot of fun.

"It's special when you take one of your worst race tracks and turn it into one of your best race tracks. It takes a lot of work to do that. It's not one of those tracks that came natural to me."

David Ragan qualified third for Sunday's race. Ragan is piloting the No. 55 Aaron's Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing, the same car which won this race with Brian Vickers back in 2013.

"It's encouraging to know that this car won a few years ago here but a lot has changed," Ragan said. "It was a different engine package, a different aero package, a lot has changed on the setups over time. Obviously that was with Billy Scott and our other crew chiefs we started the year with. But it's still encouraging for our team to know that we've won here recently. You see the pictures walking around the shop and that gives you some confidence, a lot of guys on our pit crew were part of that team that went to victory lane. Absolutely that's something we can build some confidence from.

"We've got to work hard and make sure we do the things right today for this package and what this car needs to go fast."

Last week's winner Kyle Busch qualified in the fourth spot with his JGR teammate Denny Hamlin taking the fifth spot. Kurt Busch, owner of three wins at New Hampshire, qualified in sixth place with Jimmie Johnson recording the seventh fastest time.

Matt Kenseth, who joined JGR prior to the 2013 season, qualified in eighth place with Kasey Kahne and Brad Keselowski rounding out the top ten qualifiers.
