Though early forecasts show Chamber of Commerce weather for this weekend’s Kobalt 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Martin Truex Jr. still has concerns about how the wind factor will affect the handling of his No. 78 Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats Toyota Camry.
“Wind is usually a huge factor for drivers at the Las Vegas race,” said Truex. “It won’t affect the fans’ enjoyment of the race, but from our perspective we have to be ready for a sudden change of balance with the race car. Depending on what direction the wind is coming from it can change the way your car handles so drastically.

Last month, three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Tony Stewart announced the formation of TEAM ONE CURE - a primary program of The Tony Stewart Foundation. The announcement also confirmed an entry for the 101st Running of the Indianapolis 500. Now, Team One Cure is pleased to announce the driver of the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports (SPM) No. 77 entry as Jay Howard.
"I can't begin to tell you how honored I am to have this opportunity," said Howard. "I'm not one to give up on a dream and I have every bit of determination to make this a successful effort for Tony, Team One Cure and Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. I'm in the best condition both mentally and physically, and my race craft is on point. We will be more than ready when IMS opens for practice this May."

While Brad Keselowski had a very fast Ford, Kevin Harvick's Ford was just a tad faster. Fortunately for Keselowski, with less than 20 laps to go, Harvick was too fast on victory lane giving Keselowski his 22nd career Cup Series win and his first at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
For a few brief laps, Kyle Larson stood in the way of Keselowski. Unfortunately, Larson, while making the right choice to block Keselowski just didn't have enough to hold him off.

I don’t know what to make of the new NASCAR rules. If you’re basing your judgment on the Daytona 500 alone, you don’t, either.
The Daytona 500 does not a season make. On the contrary, it has little, historically, to do with the rest of the season, and it’s no mystery why. It’s a plate race for which all the teams have been diligently preparing since the jet engines cooled after the flight back from Homestead.
Everyone is as ready as their resources allow. This will not always be the case. Teams will have to preserve their equipment. Some will run out of it.

Many will say Kurt Busch lucked his way into his first career win at Daytona International Speedway in the 59th running of the Daytona 500, the 2017 season opening Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race.
Not only was the win the first for Busch in the Daytona 500, it was also the first win in the event for car owner Tony Stewart.
“It has been a really long, hard winter, and I am so proud of everyone at SHR and Ford Performance,” said Stewart. “They really worked their tails off to get ready. Doug Yates and everybody at Roush Yates Engines brought unbelievable power all week. Had I known that all I had to do was retire, I would have retired 17 years ago if I knew that’s what it took to win the race.

For Ryan Reed, there's magic in the air at the Birthplace of Speed.
Reed went to Victory Lane at Daytona International Speedway in February 2015 and hadn't won since -- until Saturday night, when he held off Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series veteran Kasey Kahne in overtime to claim victory in the Powershares QQQ 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series season opener.
With the race going four laps past its scheduled distance of 120 laps, and with the series running NASCAR's new three-stage event format for the first time, Reed blocked Kahne in Turn 2 on the first of two overtime laps and stalled his momentum.

What seems forever in advance becomes rapid in hindsight.
Right now seemed like forever after Thanksgiving. Now, as I sit down to write, the Daytona 500 is so close that it just tapped me on the shoulder. Now the dominos are poised to fall, one after another until, yet again, the Thanksgiving turkey is in the oven and the speedways sit empty.
Thanksgiving? At the moment, it is forever away.

Cody Coughlin's rookie campaign in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will kick-off in one week when he takes on the legendary high-banks of Daytona International Speedway (FL) on Friday, February 24 in the NextEra Energy Resources 250. It will be Coughlin's second trip to 2.5-mile tri-oval in the NCWTS, but the race will be the first for Coughlin in the JEGS.com/RIDE TV number-13 Toyota Tundra for ThorSport Racing.
The 21-year-old driver said he cannot to wait to head back to Daytona.
"I'm really excited. It's always exciting to go to Daytona because the energy level is so high among every body in the garage and all of the fans. You can feel the excitement. I like Daytona. It's a cool place. I had a good run there in an ARCA car (2015) and I felt comfortable there in the Truck race too last year."

With the NASCAR season on the horizon at last, this morning I started reminiscing about my first trip to the Daytona 500.
It was 1988, and, then as now, I was immature for my age. I worked for a newspaper. It was weekly. I was young enough to believe I could head off to Florida on a Wednesday night, with a friend who said he had some friends who were already down there, and the two of us could stretch our limited resources enough to celebrate the fact that it was 1988 and George Orwell’s 1984 had not occurred. I’m not sure whether or not that subject actually came up.
Both of us had left our cell phones at home because they had not yet been invented in any approximation of the present form. I knew they existed because the banker Milburn Drysdale on The Beverly Hillbillies had had one years earlier. When we took off in search of the pomp, the pageantry, the human drama of athletic competition, at The Great American Race, I sang to myself, … so we loaded up the truck and we moved to Beverly.

Beaver Motorsports today announced its debut in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Led by veteran team owner Mark Beaver, Beaver Motorsports will field the No. 50 Chevrolet full time in 2017 with driver Travis Kvapil.
Beaver Motorsports will kick off its 2017 campaign at Daytona International Speedway in the NextEra Energy Resources 250, with the Florida Lottery as the primary sponsor for the No. 50 Chevrolet.
