Truly, here in America, we have lost our way. I could see this every time I turned on the TV, but it took me a while to figure it out.
It’s simple. We’ve turned our elections into sports and our sports into elections.
For instance, there is an alarming similarity between the path to the presidency and the Chase for the Sprint Cup. The central path is that neither makes a lick of sense.

I think sometimes about what I miss from not being at NASCAR races anymore.
I haven’t been to a track on a race weekend since the end of 2012. That’s because, on June 4, 2013, my job of 16-1/2 years was eliminated. I had a few offers to write about a race here and there, but I decided I wouldn’t go back unless I did it right. Many have assured me I’m missed, but no one missed me who was in a position to do anything about it.
My free-lance writing is from home, and the chief reason is that it’s worth what I get paid but wouldn’t be if I was paying expenses out of my own pocket.

With a dominant car that opened leads of more than six seconds after the final restart on Lap 152 of 200, Daniel Suárez won Sunday’s rain-delayed Drive Sober 200 at Dover International Speedway and earned a spot in the Round of 8 in the inaugural NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase.
The Mexican-born driver grabbed the top spot from eventual third-place finisher Justin Allgaier on Lap 155 and quickly pulled away. Ty Dillon passed Allgaier for the runner-up spot in the closing laps but finished 5.625 seconds behind Suárez, who won for the first time at Dover and the second time this season.
"I’m very proud of this team – the 19 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry," Suárez said. "They did a really good job today, and the guys just brought an amazing car. We had a ton of speed. This is one of those races that you would feel bad to lose."

Tyler Reddick out-dueled Brad Keselowski Racing teammate Daniel Hemric to win Saturday night’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series DC Solar 350 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The victory was Reddick’s first of the 2016 season and marked the first time the Brad Keselowski Racing team had fashioned a one-two finish in the series.
Reddick led five times for 70 of the 146 laps around the 1.5-mile track, taking the advantage for the final time from Cole Custer shortly after the race’s third caution.
Custer, who finished third in the No. 00 Chevrolet, faded from contention after a furious battle with Hemric, one that likely assured Reddick of the victory as the pursuers used up the grip in their tires.

Charlotte Motor Speedway billed it as “One Hot Night.”
It proved that and beyond on May 16, 1992, thanks to star drivers Davey Allison, Kyle Petty and Dale Earnhardt. Even after passage of so much time, the events of 24 years ago remain vivid for most of the thousands who saw the incredible action.
Many, including me, rate the last lap of the NASCAR Cup Series all-star race that night high among the most exciting finishes in the sanctioning body’s history, dating to 1949.
This event at the Charlotte track that has been its home all but onet time since the inaugural in 1985.

Remember last week, when Kevin Harvick was trapped a lap down at Chicagoland Speedway, finished 20th and fell out of the top 12 in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings?
Remember last year, when Harvick crashed at Chicagoland and ran out of fuel while leading at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and had to win at Dover to advance in the Chase?
That’s all moot, now that Harvick redeemed himself with a victory in Sunday’s Bad Boy Off Road 300 at New Hampshire, the second race in the Chase.

A huge push from Daniel Suárez on a restart with four laps to go in Saturday night’s eventful VisitMyrtleBeach.com 300 sent Elliott Sadler ahead of Ryan Blaney to win the opening race of the NASCAR XFINITY Series Chase at Kentucky Speedway.
Sadler’s third win of the season and 13th of his XFINITY Series career was about more than just stamping his way into Round 2 of the Chase. The Emporia, Virginia, native fought for the win while thinking of his mother, Bell, who was released from the hospital Saturday, after a week of hospitalization and two surgeries.

The first few times I went to New Hampshire, I thought every middle-aged woman in the state was Cliff Clavin’s mother.
I also had to learn the lexicon where a traffic circle is a rotary, an ice cream cone a custard and the new and variegated definition of the adjective “wicked” is applied indiscriminately. It means “extra.” Wicked hard. Wicked soft. Here wicked. There wicked. Everywhere a wicked wicked.
It helped that I love the Boston Red Sox with as much ardor as anyone from outside New England can.

William Byron stole a page from his mentor and team owner, Kyle Busch.
Leading 161 of 175 laps in Saturday’s UNOH 175 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway – the first race in the inaugural NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Chase – Byron cruised to victory, the way Busch has done so many times before, and punched his ticket into the Chase's Round of 6.
Not that runner-up Christopher Bell, Byron’s stablemate at Kyle Busch Motorsports, didn’t make it interesting in the closing laps. As Byron worked traffic in the late going, Bell closed from 1.325 seconds behind with five laps left to .430 seconds down on the next-to-last lap.

You could see it coming from a mile-and-a-half away.
On new tires, Martin Truex Jr. rocketed around the outside lane after a restart in overtime at Chicagoland Speedway and pulled away to win Sunday’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400, the opening race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup.
