FEEDBACK ARTICLE – ONE RACER ASKS: WHY WASN’T ATLANTA SHUTDOWN UPDATED?

Today’s cars are going way too fast for the tracks of yesterday.

These tracks were built when cars were going 150 mph. Track owners need to lengthen the existing tracks or build new longer, safer tracks. Too many drivers are dying because of this problem. Safe cars, yeah, safer tracks, No. - Marty Birdcreek

At the risk of repeating myself, there are currently very weak NHRA and track insurance rules as they apply to drag racing safety. There ARE rules on golf carts, grandstand seating, fencing and signage. But the current rules for trackside safety remain woefully inadequate. They only require: 2 EMTs, and an ambulance.

One of those EMT's must have completed the 8 hour NHRA/SFI safety course and must be "on the property" anytime any vehicle goes down the track (emphasis added, because one track sent its track manager to the class just to satisfy the "on the property" clause)

There are NO minimum equipment requirements for fire equipment, extrication equipment or advanced life support (paramedics)

Until safety "guidelines" became MANDATES, many track owners will invest the $$$ into concessions and beer wells before safety upgrades.
Perhaps tracks should be "graded" bronze, silver and gold. If you want to host high power categories, you must have a gold level track, safety equipment and personnel. - Mike Nervik
