FEEDBACK FRIDAY – AN ENCORE: THE COUNTY - REST IN PEACE

FEEDBACK ARTICLE - AN ENCORE: THE COUNTY - REST IN PEACE

10-30-08ocir.jpgGreat story on a great facility in the birthplace of our sport.  I had the honor of promoting those last World Finals held there while working for NHRA and also attended one of the "100 Funny Cars" Doner freak shows. Wow. Don't think we'll ever see shows like those again. Thanks for the flashback. - Steve Earwood

Great article, my Dad was a starter at OCIR during the 70's and I grew up at that track and it crushed me when they closed it.  Beleive it or not even seeing it today is tough.  That track was the place to go, and oh by the way I was at several of those fox hunt races and they where crazy.  I still have one of those OCIR mirror's hanging on my wall in my garage.  My Dad donated his blue OCIR jacket to the Wally Parks Museum last year when we where racing at the Finals.

I have a picture of myself with the Snake at the track in around 1977 or so along with a signed picture of his Army car, he re-signed it at the Autolite Nationals about 8 or 10 years ago.  Great job guys, brought back a lot of good memories. - John Winslow Jr

10-30-08ocir.jpgWow, 25 years ago CCIR was still here. The description in the last paragraph was painful. Kind of like getting back together in high school with a girlfriend from 4th grade, hitting it off real good, and then she says "Sorry, my parents are moving to Ohio. I gotta go"

I really miss that place.

It's close proximity to the El Toro Marine base made me think it would never leave, but alas the base left too. - Tommy Thompson

I was stationed in Long Beach, CA from January of 1969 until June of 1971, and I will never forget the unbelievable shows that I witnessed during that time. I missed a few during a 6 month depolyment to Vietnam, but the other 24 months were Nirvana!  Omar Carruthers - The Tent Maker, Beach City Chevrolet, Sticks Unlimited, Rich Sironian, Pat Foster, Galpin Ford, New Breed, M/T Mustangs & Mavericks, Doug Thorley, AMX-1, Russ Davis Ford, Jr. Borgdon and his Phony Pony, the Hang 10 meets, it was the best of times. It may not have been the summer of love, but they definitely were the summers of Nitro! Lions and Irwindale were great, but OCIR was the top of the heap!  Thanks for memories! - Dave Gutierrez/GBR Racing
