BEAL, HOLLIDAY WIN ROCKINGHAM EVENT; PLOTT TORCO COALITION CHAMP AGAIN

Thomasville’s Andy Beal and West Virginia invader Taz Holliday II won the battles but Winston-Salem’s Tommy Plott won the war Sunday, sewing up his second Torco Race Fuels Carolina Coalition points championship during the 2006 season finale at Steve Earwood’s Rockingham Dragway.

Beal used an almost perfect package – a .002 of a second reaction time and a 4.836 eighth-mile time on a 4.830 dial-in – to turn back W.G. Lankas of Sneads Ferry in the Saturday final before Holliday coasted to the Sunday title when Kip Maddox of Piedmont, S.C., was guilty of a final round breakout foul. Thomasville’s Andy Beal and West Virginia invader Taz Holliday II won the battles but Winston-Salem’s Tommy Plott won the war Sunday, sewing up his second Torco Race Fuels Carolina Coalition points championship during the 2006 season finale at Steve Earwood’s Rockingham Dragway.

Lankas of Sneads Ferry in the Saturday final before Holliday coasted to the Sunday title when Kip Maddox of Piedmont, S.C., was guilty of a final round breakout foul.

Those wins were worth $5,000 each for Beal and Maddox.

Plott didn’t figure in either race but neither did the three drivers who entered the event closest to him in Top Eliminator points: Charles Doss of Statesville, Rodney Revis of Honea Path, S.C., or Darrell Collins of Winston-Salem. As a result, the veteran coasted to a Coalition title that will earn him the biggest share ($10,000) of a year-end bonus fund.

In the Footbrake class, the Torco championship came down to .004 of a second. That’s the margin by which Rockingham track champion Eric Aman of Mt. Olive was guilty of fouling out in the very first round of Sunday’s finale. That misstep handed Steve Alford of Angier, who was tied with Aman entering Sunday's competition, his second Coalition championship.

In the Trailers of the East Coast Jr. Dragster class, Dylan Stott of Columbus held on to win the championship over Corey Penny of Louisburg and Grayson Lister of Trinity, icing the title by reaching the final round of the final race of the season.

Other event winners at The Rock included Michael Beard of Seagrove and Jim Wood of Laurens, S.C., in Footbrake, Cole Williams of Pilot and Hamlet’s Tyler Webb in Junior Dragster.
