Three-time NHRA Top Fuel winner “Hot” Rod Fuller will pilot a Top Fuel
dragster for David Powers Motorsports, team owner David Powers
announced today. Fuller will hit the track for preseason testing with
new teammate Whit Bazemore at the National Time Trials near Phoenix on
January 26.
“David Powers Motorsports will run two race cars, one driven by “Hot” Rod Fuller, which will be sponsored by Valvoline for the first two races of the 2007 season as previously committed to by the team,” Powers said. “The other car will be driven by Whit Bazemore and sponsored by Matco Tools. We’ll have a new modern hospitality area flanked by both race teams that will house up to 300 guests, along with a new tech trailer. We couldn’t be more excited about our team heading into the season.”

Last season, his first as a full-time Top Fuel competitor, the talented driver powered his Valvoline dragster to victories at the Phoenix and Englishtown, N.J. events as well as advancing to three additional final rounds on the way to a fifth-place finish in drag racing’s elite division. After spending the off season at home in Las Vegas training and bracket racing, the 35-year-old racer couldn’t be more thrilled to return to the cockpit in a camp where he’s very comfortable.
“We finished fifth last year and were one of the top cars during the last half of the season,” Fuller said. “We were running really well and it’s a sign of how strong this team can be. A lot of people forget, but last year was my first full season as a Top Fuel driver. I’m very comfortable in the car and I have a new excitement entering the 2007 season. I don’t see any reason why we can’t go into Pomona (Calif.) and start the season off with a win.”
Fuller’s Powers-owned rail will sport its familiar Valvoline colors for the first two races of the 2007 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series season. David Powers Motorsports team manager Lee Beard and veteran crew chief Rob Flynn will call the tuning shots on Fuller’s dragster in 2007.
“He just continues to impress me as a driver,” Beard said. “There isn’t anybody I’ve seen come down the pipe in a long time that has adapted to driving a Top Fuel car as well as “Hot” Rod Fuller.
“Rob Flynn and I have an outstanding working relationship. After working together for the last year-and-a-half, our minds think the same. I’m really excited about building on that relationship and working with Rob as part of our two-car team. We have some really great people here and everyone has the ability to work well together and that’s important.”
Bazemore, a 20-time NHRA Funny Car winner who has twice finished second in the NHRA standings (2001, ’03) under Beard’s leadership, moves to the Top Fuel division in 2007 and will team with Fuller to form a potent driving combination. The veteran flopper pilot is eager to work with his new teammate.
“Rod (Fuller) is a very talented driver and a good guy,” Bazemore said. “I look forward to working with him and having him as a teammate in the Powers camp.”
With a loaded arsenal of Matco Tools at their disposal, Powers’ two-car Top Fuel brigade aims to makes waves against their tool rivals and the Top Fuel division. The 2007 NHRA season will see the birth of the “tool wars” with Bazemore and Fuller doing battle against category-great Doug Kalitta and veteran racer Doug Herbert.
