ANOTHER GROUP FORMS SEEKING CONTROL OF AUSSIE DRAG RACING

Drag racing’s power struggle in organized Australian national drag racing has another group seeking control of Group 1 racing.

CompetitionPlus.com reported in AUSTRALIAN DRAG RACING CONTROVERSY PUTS SPORT AT CROSSROADS, that Top Fuel racer Phil Lamattina has organized Group 1 racers [Eliminator Racing Series] in an effort to wrestle marketing of the series away from ANDRA’s marketing arm DRAG Ltd.

CompetitionPlus.com has acquired a copy of a letter distributed by Aussie Top Fuel icon Steve Read, on Professional Racers Organisation letterhead, informing the Australian racers of an alternative organization, a Group 1 Owners Association similar to the American P.R.O. group.

“My sole purpose, speaking at the meeting [organized by the Lamattino group], was to gain feedback from fellow Group 1 team owners as to whether they would be in favour of forming a Group One owner’s organisation, which would give all members an equal opportunity to voice their concerns and speak with an united (one) voice.”

Read, in his letter, states the Australian Pro Owners Association (PRO) should work with the new ANDRA Ltd. Board.

“I would like to encourage all Group One team owners to consider the NEW ANDRA board’s willingness to work with the teams, and a Group One owner’s organisation, to achieve the desired outcomes regarding a championship season calendar, marketing efforts and transparency to members.”

A new constitution, according to the letter, could come as early as  July 4.

Read expects a first meeting by late July or early August.

“The weekend meeting would give Group One team owners the opportunity to formally vote on establishing a PRO group, vote in a PRO group executive or board and hear the progress made by the NEW ANDRA board, and how, we Group One team owners can take our sport forward collectively, including race dates – working with ANDRA and the tracks – marketing, promotion and sponsor (partnership) opportunities.”
