DAVE NORTHROP RETURNS TO PS

After competing for the last couple of years behind the wheel of Kenny Koretsky’s NitroFish Pro Stock Mopar, the Northrop family will return to Pro Stock with their own team.  The family has been hooked on racing for years.

Patriarch of the family, Paul Northrop said, “Let’s face it. I just want to enjoy myself and we talked about going back to our own car for a while. This particular deal came about through our relationship with Bill Jenkins, who built the engines for our Comp car years ago, along with supplying engines for us to run Pro Stock before we ran with Kenny.”

“It’s just about everybody’s dream to run a Pro Stocker,” says Dave, “and we dabbled on our own for several years and had a great time. We were fortunate to hook up with Kenny [Koretsky] two years ago, which had me driving one of his cars. For that, we’ll always be grateful, and our relationship with him goes back a long ways, which we’ll still maintain.”

Despite only attending 14 events in 2006 and qualifying at eight of those, Northrop managed to finish 21st in the NHRA/POWERade series, but it was enough to convince them to continue on.

Dave says, “We realize that Pro Stock racing is arguably the toughest professional class out there, but our outlook and expectations are high, as they’ve always been.”

The culmination of this exercise was the purchase of an ex-Jim Yates Pontiac GTO which was built by Jerry Haas Race Cars. Haas was also the supplier of cars for the Team Tape’s past efforts both in Comp and Pro Stock, which makes the choice of car one of loyalty. It will be outfitted with a Jenkins engine combination, with information shared by the Yates team.

Plans call for the ISC Racer’s Tape team to attend nine NHRA national events the balance of this season, with a debut set for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta on the weekend of April 26-29.

“The cold weather here in the northeast has kept us from testing,” says Dave, “but we’ll be heading to Atlanta and stopping somewhere along the way to shake the new car down.”

As they have done in the past, as well as been successful at it, family style will be the order of the day, with help from the Yates camp. Brother Dan Northrop, Glenn Braksator and Charlie Hughes will round out the crew with, of course, more than just spiritual assistance from “Pops”, Paul Northrop.
