At the end of the first day of the 2007 Snap-on Nitro Championships, Phil Read, Aaron Lynch and Brett Stevens top-qualified in their respective championship brackets in a day of simply awesome racing.

In the lead up to the event, the nine-car Top Fuel had been the most talked about bracket. Of these, five ran in the four-second zone in qualifying.

Phil Read was ecstatic about his team's number one qualifying position for the event, saying, "To do so well in front of our hometown crowd means so much to me. We feel that we could have run better than what we did with the 4.66, but we couldn't g et a handle on the combination. Tomorrow is a new day and I'm sure things will pick up for us here."

Should the team be able to win the event tomorrow, they will have secured their second consecutive Australian Top Fuel Championship.

"If we can win the event and take the championship home tomorrow, we're going to have more than good reason to be celebrating tomorrow night," added Read.

Once again, the Top Alcohol brigade really turned up the wick during qualifying tonight with Queensland native Aaron Lynch securing the top spot with a 5.662 at 251.34mph in his B&L Steel-sponsored Mustang Funny Car. Fellow Queenslander Steve Reed claimed Top Speed for the Alky field with a 252.99mph charge.

"My hat is off to the whole team for the way we have performed this weekend. During the short time we've been involved in this bracket we have come a long way and having said that, there's still a lot more to come. We'll go in tomorrow and try the best we can," said Lynch.

Brett Stevens was oh-so-close to securing number one qualifier in Top Alcohol but made it to the top of the leader-board in Top Bike, instead.

"It would have been good to have both vehicles number one in their respective classes - however, the main thing is that I'm solidly in both fields. I can now focus on race day without a lack of confidence," Stevens remarked.

Stevens used a 6.626-second pass to top the fuel bikes and a 5.662 to earn second behind Lynch in Top Alcohol.

Tomorrow is the final day of the 2007 running of the Snap-on Nitro Championships. Racing will start at 8:45am, with Group One action at 5, 7 and 9pm.
