Maybe this was what Tommy Johnson Jr. and the Skoal team needed, a little pressure from their bosses.
Racing in the shadow of Skoal’s Greenwich, Conn. headquarters, with two busloads of employees watching, Johnson ended a season-long slump by winning his first race to move up from 12th place all the way to eighth, just inside the Countdown cutoff.
Johnson was the No. 1 qualifier and had the best car in three of four rounds of qualifying, so it’s not a surprise that he won.
Not unless you were in Englishtown and saw the inferno after his first-round win that melted his Chevy Impala SS body.

In Pro Stock, Richie Stevens Jr. capitalized on a semifinal finish to leapfrog Mike Edwards and Warren Johnson, moving up two spots from 10th place to eighth place.
There were no new drivers into the Top 8 in Top Fuel, but it’s going to be a wild ride to the end of the regular season: Only 68 points separate sixth-place Melanie Troxel and 12th-place Doug Herbert.
It’s almost as close in Funny Car where only 53 points separate seventh-place Ashley Force from 12th-place Cruz Pedregon.
