PARTY TIME AT THE CHRR

What's better than one party? Two, of course, and that's what's planned for Friday night, Oct. 12 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bakersfield, from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m.. It's all part of the celebration surrounding the 16th annual Automobile Club of Southern California Hot Rod Reunion, presented by Holley, Oct. 12-14, at Auto Club Famoso Raceway.

Up first is the Hot Rod Reunion Reception, held in the Grand Ballroom. Open to everyone at no charge, it's a tribute to the Reunion's Grand Marshal, legendary drag racing champion Ed "The Ace" McCulloch, and the other Honorees: John Buttera, the drag racing team of Rocky Childs & Jim Albert, Gary "Red" Greth, Mike Jones, and the team of Mike Kuhl & Carl Olson. Also, the Justice Brothers Spotlight Award will be given to the 1964-65 U.S. Drag Team. What's better than one party? "The reception offers a chance for fans to meet some of drag racing's true heroes," said Tony Thacker, executive director of the nonprofit Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum in Pomona, Calif., which produces the Reunion. At the same time as the reception, another Reunion party takes place in front of the hotel where hundreds of people gather, chat and wait for the "firing up" of a historic nostalgic dragster, which happens as the Honoree Reception lets out. "That really gets them excited," Thacker said. "It's the end of a great night but the party continues throughout the weekend at Auto Club Famoso Raceway."

The 16th annual Automobile Club of Southern California Hot Rod Reunion, presented by Holley, is part of the museum's Hot Rod Heritage Series which works to bring to life the sights, sounds and people who made history in the early days of drag racing, land speed racing and the golden age of American car culture.

Unique among motorsports events, the Reunion honors some of the top names in hot rodding from the past and features a fabulous array of cool drag cars, street rods, classics, customs and muscle cars of the historic and present-day hot rod eras.
