NO FOUR-LANE CHARLOTTE

David Poole, a highly
respected motorsports journalist from the Charlotte Observer, recently quoted a visitor’s information packet
regarding the new drag strip that’s being built by Bruton Smith next to Lowe’s
Motor Speedway. You know, the one that
will host NHRA’s 24th race in September. (A formal press conference
will announce the already obvious on Thursday.)

A highly placed source
at NHRA has confirmed that the track will be completed in the normal 2-lane
configuration, and isn’t likely to be expanded at any time in the foreseeable
future.
You may recall that when
The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was constructed it, too, was originally
planned as a 4-lane track, but it remains a 2-lane facility and there are no
plans for expansion. Our sources have
also confirmed that were they to do it over again it’s likely that The Strip
would have a slightly different configuration, as considerable space was left
untouched that could have been used more efficiently.
