BULL VERSUS FUNNY CAR

What do a Funny Car driver and a PBR rider have in common? More than you might think. This week the NHRA POWERade Series and the PBR's Built Ford Tough World Finals are taking over Las Vegas, giving sports fans all they would need in the way of power and performance.

Eric Medlen, driver of the John Force-owned Castrol SYNTEC Ford Mustang and PBR Finalist Cord McCoy got together Wednesday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, each bringing their own talent to the track.

"Las Vegas has always been one of the most exciting cities because you can go to a drag race, a concert and watch the best bull riding around, all in one city," Medlen said. "There are so many things that bull riding and drag racing have in common. We have to build our beast out of steel and put it all together and then learn how to tame it long enough to make it go down the quarter-mile track at blazing speeds.

"The cowboys who ride bulls have their beasts to tame and they don't always want to be tamed. The bulls sometimes want to tame the cowboys. There is a big adrenaline rush in both sports."

Professional qualifying for the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals at LVMS kicks off Friday. All the action can be seen on ESPN2 throughout the weekend. The first weekend of the PBR World Finals starts Friday at Mandalay Bay and will continue next weekend at the Thomas & Mack Arena. Versus Network will air more than 18 hours of live coverage throughout the event, starting Friday.

McCoy, qualified for his first PBR event, said there isn't a better place to watch the nitromethane-burning Funny Cars and the 2,000-pound bulls in the same weekend.

"This is such an awesome city and a perfect place to have both of these events at the same time," McCoy said. "Everyone gets behind both events and it's exciting to be able to watch two powerful events in one weekend."

While Medlen is competing for his first career NHRA championship with just two races left this season, McCoy is one of just 45 bull riders qualified for the season finale event.

What do they have planned in their spare time? A visit to each other's event, of course.

"I am definitely going to get over to the PBR Finals this weekend," Medlen said. "It's the premier event for bull riding and I wouldn't want to miss it. Cord said he's ready for a little drag racing, so we're going to make sure and get him out here so he can experience horsepower on a completely different level. It's going to be a great weekend."

So how do the two sports stack up?
