The Ashley family has plenty to cheer about headed into this weekend’s AAA Auto
Club Finals in Pomona, Ca. The two-fold elation can be traced to patriarch Mike
Ashley completing his first full season behind the wheel of the Knoll Gas –
Torco Race Fuels nitro Funny Car and young Justin Ashley gunning for the NHRA
POWERade Fan Nationals championship.
The weekend is one that everyone in the
family from grandparents to distant relatives to friends have been eagerly
awaiting.

“We have lots of support coming in,” Mike
said. “I am excited for many reasons. I am just as excited to see my son perform
as I am about our chances with this Knoll Gas – Torco Race Fuels Funny Car. We
both have equally great opportunities before us and that is what intrigues me
the most. You can count on one thing we will go into the weekend aiming for the
top of the mountain.”
While the elder Ashley may be in hot pursuit
of that elusive first victory, 11-year old Justin has the practice down-pat.
Justin not only scored a convincing victory at Denver’s Mopar Mile High
Nationals to qualify for the trip to Pomona, but also added a second victory
during Reading’s Toyo Tires Nationals for good measure.
“You really don’t think about winning and
losing when you are playing the game, you just concentrate on doing the best you
can,” Justin said. “I would love for me and dad to both make it to the winner’s
circle this weekend. That would be perfect.”
In case you were
wondering, Justin holds a 1 – 0 record over Mike in head-to-head competition on
the simulators and on national television nonetheless.
