ANDERSON WINS SEVENTH K&N HORSEPOWER CHALLENGE, SECURES NO. 1 POSITION AT VEGAS FOUR-WIDE

Las Vegas.

Sin City. The City of Lights. The Entertainment Capital of the World.

It is also a place where few leave with more money than which they started.

Unless, of course, you are Greg Anderson.

Anderson has a special relationship with Las Vegas, specifically The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Eight times he has walked away a national event winner at the crown jewel facility just a few miles north of the heart of downtown and six times previous he has won the big-money shootout held at the track each year in the spring.

Now, make that seven.

Anderson earned his seventh all-time victory in the K&N Horsepower Challenge - NHRA’s longest-running specialty race - on Saturday at the 19th annual DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, defeating teammate and No. 1 seed Bo Butner in the final to earn a cool $50,000 payday and bringing his lifetime earnings in this speciality race to an impressive $350,000

“That is more than my house is worth,” Anderson said jokingly about his career winnings in the Pro Stock speciality race. “It’s been awesome and K&N has been so wonderful to this class and this sport in general. It is an honor to race for that check out there. That is big money for us. That will go a long way toward funding these race cars and making them faster as the year goes along.

“Not too many people that come to Vegas leave with more money than they came with and I am.”

Anderson, the No. 2 overall seed in the race-within-a-race, defeated Erica Enders and Jeg Coughlin in the opening rounds before facing Butner in his 10th career K&N Horsepower Challenge final. But the anticipated showdown between two of Pro Stock’s elite proved anticlimactic as Butner lit the red bulb by -.163, sending Anderson to his seventh overall win and third in a row in the speciality race.

“This is a big boost in the arm and I needed that. I can’t wait for tomorrow now,” Anderson said. “It is going to be a great weekend - it already has been - and hopefully we can make it even better tomorrow.”

Anderson’s biggest threat on Saturday came in round one when Enders got away cleanly with a big advantage on the tree, but Anderson chased her down and won a nailbiter - 6.689 to a 6.721 - to advance to the semifinals. There Anderson cleaned up his act at the starting line and used a solid .008 light to defeat Coughlin with a 6.749 to a 6.795 to continue his remarkable run at the Vegas facility.

“Obviously we love first-class facilities and this is the top of the food chain. Charlotte and here, they are as nice a facility as you could ever dream of running and it is nice when you can go somewhere where you don’t have to make adjustments just to try and manage your car down the track,” Anderson said. “You can give it everything you’ve got. We love racing that way in Pro Stock and it is not every track where you can do that, but this is one of them. For a brand new four-lane racetrack to be this good already, my hats off to them. It makes it fun to go out there and do your job.”

Butner reached his first K&N Horsepower Challenge final with wins over Vincent Nobile and Drew Skillman.

To add to Anderson’s near-perfect day, the driver of the Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro also earned his 95th career No. 1 qualifier and second of the season on Saturday with a 6.669-second pass at 206.45 mph set Friday night. Deric Kramer qualified second with a 6.681 at 205.63 mph and Butner is third on the ladder with a 6.702 at 205.32 mph.

Anderson will face Joey Grose in round one on Sunday.

“That is two weeks in a row now and that obviously tells you that I’ve got a great Summit Chevrolet under my belt,” Anderson said. “I’ve had a little bit of a sluggish start, but it seems this weekend everything is under me. It is all up to me now to not mess it up and pilot that thing down there and turn that win light on. I’ve got the car, I’ve got the engine, I’ve got the tuneup, I’ve got the crew chief, I’ve got the crew, it is all down to me now.

“And now I’ve got the confidence which I haven’t had this year. Today absolutely does a ton for me confidence wise. I think my year is about to turn around to be honest with you.”
