BRAYS BRING THE THUNDER IN SYDNEY

There are few names better known in Australian drag racing than the Bray family. Saturday in Sydney, the father and son Top Doorslammer team of Victor and Ben Bray, both multi-time champions provided a reminder during Sydney Dragway’s Gulf Western Oil Nitro Thunder.

Ben scored the Chicago-style victory in beating defending Thunder 400 champion John Zappia on a holeshot, 5.70 to 5.64. A session earlier the second-gen Bray beat his father in a battle of personal bests, where Victor turned in a 5.86 in his ageless 1957 Chevy.

“The Nitro Thunder event has been a great weekend out for everyone here at Team Bray Racing – any time you can log a few Personal Bests and a shot at the finals, it is a good day,” said Victor, who had the holeshot over Phillips in the final but was beaten to the line with a 5.722s pass to his 6.681s effort at 169.10mph.

“We are particularly happy to have these results with the new converter configuration we have been working on. The combination had had only four passes in total before Saturday night’s racing, so to come away with a semi-final win and a final appearance is a real positive sign for us.”
