Chad Green confirmed today he plans to make the jump into a fuel Funny Car after years of testing and practice.

Green, a regular on the NHRA Pro Modified Series, will make his NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series debut at the Lucas Oil Summernationals in Indianapolis (July 17 - 19, 2020)

Green will race his newly purchased Funny Car operation under the Tim Wilkerson Racing umbrella, with Daniel Wilkerson serving as crew chief.

"We're going to bring it out for the second Indy race; the first one that the Pro Mods are going to be in," Green told CompetitionPlus.com. "I'm very excited about it. It's something that just kind of came about; wasn't really planning on it. The opportunity came for me to buy this stuff after the end of last season and it was just the right opportunity to get the stuff. I didn't have any plans for racing it.

"Tim called me here a month or so back and said, "What do you think about driving it in one of these Indy races?" And I thought about it, said, "Why the heck not?"

Green confirmed when he's not racing the car; there's a chance he may rent the car out for a few races. As for him, one race might satisfy his need for really big speed.

"We're going to take it out for this one race," Green confirmed. "That's the only plans we have this year so far, but you know that could change if we get partners or something, some money."

Green initially licensed in 2017 during the PRO Winter Warm-up test session at Wild Horse Motorsports Park outside of Phoenix. Every preseason, Green has maintained his competitive license by making the required passes.

Green will pull double-duty at the Summernationals marking the first time he's raced something other than his nitrous-injected Pro Modified. What remains to be seen is how he will handle driving two diametrically opposite styles of race car during the course of an event. The common denominator is both styles of race car are extremely volatile.

"I guess I'm going to find out how I handle it," Green admitted. "I haven't been in a funny car in about a year and a half. So, the good thing is we are going to try to take it for a test lap on Friday because they're allowing testing at these races. We'll get to take it down the track, maybe once before, but you know, we'll just see. I do pretty good under pressure."

Green doesn't have visions of a career in nitro racing beyond the task at hand; qualifying for the fuel Funny Car division. To pull off this feat would be a big-time accomplishment.

"That would mean everything to me," Green said. "That's the goal. That's what we're going to go do. I mean, just to get the opportunity to drive this car in the race is a come true, a long 20-year dream. And to see it come about is awesome. And the timing's really well, too. This will be my first race back to NHRA since my crash, which was in Indy. So, we'll be going back to the first race in Indy I think it's going to be awesome."
