FORMER NHRA RACER RENCK BETTERS HIS WORLD RECORD

Ed Renck, a former NHRA drag racer, bettered his own world record at the Salt Flats recently.

On Sept. 17, at the 2017 World of Speed event at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Renck improved on his record in the C Gas Roadster Class with a speed of 236.99 mph.

“It was definitely great to better my record,” said Renck, 75. “I was a little disappointed because I was going 236.6 between the four and five-mile mark and the tires started slipping. I got it back up to speed and bettered my record, but I was hoping to go 240 mph but I couldn’t because the tires were slipping. But, this is still a cool deal to improve on my record.”

Renck set his new record on Sept. 16 and backed it up on Sept. 17. The event is sanctioned by the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association.

Renck initially established the C Gas Roadster Class mph record with a speed of 236.162 mph on Aug. 17, 2016, at “Bonneville Speed Week.”

Renck’s performance comes on the heels of him being inducted into the Colorado Motorsports Hall of Fame on Oct. 6 in Denver, Colo.

Prior to trying his hand at the Salt Flats, Renck had an impressive drag racing resume, winning over 45 races all over the country from 1967-83. He won NHRA’s Division V Top Fuel Championship in 1970 and was second in Division V in the same class in 1972 and 1978.

Additionally, Renck qualified No. 1 at NHRA’s 1972 World Finals in Ontario, Calif., in Top Fuel.

By 1976, he changed classes to Pro Comp and captured the Division V Championship and was named Division V “Driver of the Year.”
