UPDATED - HARKER OUT OF SURGERY, RECUPERATING FROM INJURIES

Veteran Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Steve Harker continues to undergo surgery at Toledo’s Mercy St. Vincent Hospital for injuries he incurred in a high-speed accident Saturday during the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals at Norwalk, Ohio.

Funny Car driver John Bojec, Harker’s son-in-law, told Competiton Plus that Harker underwent an MR exam and doctors confirmed that he had suffered no head trauma.

However, Harker needed emergency surgery – in Bojec’s words – “to repair some internal damage.”

Bojec said the word from the attending doctors at Mercy St. Vincent Hospital was that “Everything’s going to be OK.”

Competition Plus will provide updates as we receive them.

Harker is out of surgery at Mercy St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo and is expected to remain there for a few days, recuperating from several broken ribs and what son-in-law John Bojec described as “internal issues.”

Bojec indicated Harker, who was alert and talking with doctors and nurses following surgery, is expected to make a full recovery.

“His broken ego is probably going to hurt him more,” Bojec teased after learning Harker made it through the operation with flying colors. “He’ll be feeling his age for a little while,” he said of Harker, 65.

Harker’s wife, Jenelle Harker, and daughter Diana Bojec were at the hospital with the injured racer.
