JAMIE FARRELL NOW RUNNING CFM

Racing has always been a part of Jamie Farrell’s life. His father, Kenny Farrell is a multi-time national event champion in the IHRA.

Back in 1993, the elder Farrell formed Carbon Fiber Manufacturing. Farrell, a former United States Marine and composite technician at US Airways, formed CFM to provide affordable composite technology to industries other than aerospace. Farrell chose to produce drag racing components.

Fast-forward to the present and CFM is still running strong. The only difference is three months ago, Kenny turned the keys of the company over to his son Jamie, 19. Kenny still runs his KF Trucking Company. Both CFM and KF Trucking are based in Rock Hill, S.C., which is 20 minutes south of Charlotte, N.C.

“I’m running CFM now and I also have my own deal on the side called CFM Motorsports and I’m a dealer for about 30 different companies, I sell parts online,” Jamie said. “It’s like on online speed shop.”

Jamie has been involved in racing most of his life – driving Jr. Dragsters from age 6 to 15. Just before he turned 16, he started testing a Super Comp/Top Dragster and he raced that dragster in IHRA in 2013 where he finished 2nd in division 9, earning his spot at the tournament of champions. Jamie won his first IHRA race at 16 years, three months of age.

“While I was still attending high school, I started doing sales for my dad and over the past two and a half years I just started getting more and more responsibility,” Jamie said.

“Then, about three months ago, dad asked me if I wanted to run the company and I said, ‘Yeah, sure.’ It’s not much different than what I have been doing. Now a days, we’re into small-tire racing and we still do interior carbon work. In the offseason, everything is crazy - we are really busy.”

Jamie acknowledged running CFM wasn’t ever something he thought he would be doing one day.

“All throughout high school I wanted to be an engineering major,” Jamie said. “As time went on, I was working over here at (CFM) and I saw the potential it had and I figured one day I might be running it so I wanted to learn the ropes and I ended up getting into it full swing and now here I am. Last week, I went down to my high school and talked to my engineering teacher, who was a big influence on me. I was talking to him about how it’s definitely crazy that I’m doing this now, but over time this has become normal for me and things are going smooth. I’m just hoping to keep upping the bar in the coming year.”

Jamie also took a moment to thank the people who have helped put him in his current position.

“I would like to thank my parents, Kenny and Christine Farrell, my girlfriend, Emily who helps out at times, Kenny and LaGail Ford at PTC, Lawyer Williamson, and Bryan Coburn,” he said.

In terms of racing, according to Jamie, he and his father are building a 1969 Camaro that he and his dad are going to bracket race and run IHRA Hot Rod with this season.
