JEG COUGHLIN NO. 1 ON PRO STOCK LADDER AT NHRA FALLNATIONALS

Jeg Coughlin Jr. came to the NHRA FallNationals at the Texas Motorplex Friday near Dallas chasing points.

Coughlin Jr. arrived in town sixth in the point standings – 111 points behind class leader and teammate Erica Enders.

Coughlin put himself in the best position possible on race day, qualifying No. 1 with a 6.509-second elapsed time at 210.41 mph Friday night in his JEGS.com Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro.

This is Coughlin’s 31st career Pro Stock No. 1 qualifying spot and second this season. He also was the top qualifier in Seattle Aug. 3.

Coughlin won the Dallas race in 2002 and was runner-up at this event in 2000, 2003, 2008 and 2018. He also was No. 1 qualifier in his class last year.

“As a kid growing up in the sport of drag racing, Billy Meyer created the first all-concrete dragstrip and he was always a hero to me,” Coughlin said. “He was always great to our family. It feels great. We had some unique weather conditions. Transition from Friday to Friday evening through Saturday and we’re supposed to start off with a cool day (Sunday) earlier in the day where there will be a little bit higher atmospheric pressure and a little more barometer, so the Pro Stock cars are going to be pretty quick round one and then the heat is supposed to set in if you go can go off the forecast.

"It feels great to be No. 1 here. This place has always been special. We have three races left in the Countdown. We were No. 1 in three of the four sessions and No. 2 the other session to Erica. So, Team Elite is looking really, really strong. (Sunday) is Gameday and that’s what is come for and I’m really looking forward to hitting the track.”

Coughlin faces No. 16 qualifier Richie Stevens in the first round. Troy Coughlin Jr., Jeg's nephew, also is qualified No. 1 in Top Alcohol Dragster at Dallas.

“We have definitely been around the sport a long, long time,” said Jeg Jr. about his family. “My father Jeg started in the 1960s racing and competing and flowing into the second generation and Troy Jr. into the third generation. It feels great that we were both (No. 1) and we will have to see if we can do something with it. The key is gameday Sunday.”
