LAUGHLIN IS A JACK-OF-ALL TRADES, MASTER OF THEM ALL

Versatility is in Alex Laughlin's DNA.

Laughlin, the face of the Gas Monkey enterprise in drag racing, has raced a variety of race vehicles from Pro Stock to an A/Fuel Dragster to a 10.5-inch tire Drag Radial entry and soon a turbocharged Pro Modified.

"A lot of people asked last year the difference between the A/Fuel Dragster and the Pro Stock car and how you adjust because they’re so different, and they are," Laughlin admitted. "Everything about them is different, wherein the Pro Stock car the shifter is the brake handle in the Dragster.

"I think that actually helps keep everything separated because where it really gets difficult is when you get out of a door car and get into another door car.

"One you leave with a clutch, one you leave with a trans brake. When you do the burnout, you shift through gears in one and you don’t in the other. One of them you shift going down the track and the other shifts automatically. So you definitely have to get into each car and just look around and remember where you are and what you’re doing for sure."

Laughlin understands he could always go bracket racing, which he believes ranks right up there with the most challenging forms of drag racing.

"That’s as tough as it gets," Laughlin said. "A lot of those guys, they don’t have the super smart crew chiefs and everything like we’ve got in Pro Stock and whatnot and they’re doing it themselves. That’s a very respectable class, and that’s what I grew up doing. I started bracket racing when I was 15 and I did that all the way until I was I guess 25, when I started Pro Stock."

Laughlin would no doubt love to race only one of the top-tier nitro classes, and just in a dragster.

"I have absolutely zero interest in putting 10,000 horsepower in front of me," Laughlin admitted. "I’m crazy enough to do the stuff that I’m doing, but you have to be full-on mental to drive a Funny Car."
