RACETRACK OR DIRT ROAD, HIGHT CONVINCED AUTO CLUB CHEVY CAN GET IT DONE ANYWHERE

Robert Hight is one confident guy.

And why shouldn’t he be?

With a fast car, a dedicated team and veteran tuner Jimmy Prock in his corner, the new fastest man in Funny Car is riding so high, he is convinced his car can get it done just about anywhere.

“I think this thing will run 330 mph on a dirt road right now,” Hight said with a laugh. “It’s just a lot of fun right now.”

Hight continued his tremendous qualifying stretch on Friday, driving the Auto Club Chevrolet Camaro to the provisional top spot at the 30th annual NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways with a 3.894-second pass at 329.42 mph - comfortably ahead of second place Tommy Johnson Jr.

“What I am most impressed with is my team and how they are able to adapt race-to-race, conditions-to-conditions,” Hight said. “Last week we saw killer conditions on that Friday night run and we ran a 3.80 at almost 340 mph. You then come up here, you have a really hot track, and we were second the first run and low tonight. It shows that my guys have a good handle on everything. It almost ran 330 mph tonight.”

Hight was second quickest in session one on Friday with a 4.008 and bettered that in the cooler air to take his Funny Car to the top spot. Johnson is qualified second with a 3.930 at 324.05 mph, while John Force is third with a 3.973 at 307.23 mph.

If Hight’s time holds on Saturday, it will be his second No. 1 qualifier in a row and fourth of the season. It will also extend his streak of qualifying inside the top three to nine-straight races.

“Truthfully, there are so many times we change things from year-to-year that it is pretty tough to go back and look at a combination from last year,” Hight said. “You can look at track stuff, but as far as the race car and the changes you make to try to get better, a lot of what you have done in the past you have to throw out. A lot of what we saw today is like Pomona. This air isn’t very good with all of the smoke. Out in California it is smog, here it is smoke, and I don’t think these engines like breathing that in.”

While another notch in Hight’s quickest qualifier belt would certainly be impressive, what he is most concerned about is putting it all together on Sunday. Despite a number of impressive, chart-topping laps this season, Hight has only one win and sits fourth in the championship standings and a move to shore up his race day setup would go a long way once the Countdown to the Championship gets here in a little over a month.

“It goes back to the same old thing we have been talking about - we have got to race better on Sunday,” Hight said. “We have the performance when it is hot, cold, we just have to keep up with the track and the conditions and not beat ourselves.

“I think Saturday is a big day and we are going to really focus tomorrow. Sometimes on Saturdays we might do some testing, but we are not going to do that. We are going to work tomorrow on Sunday’s race day setup.

“I am looking to get three points both runs tomorrow, that will make me confident going into Sunday.”
