SKILLMAN NAILS A TWO-FER IN THURSDAY POMONA SPORTSMAN QUALIFYING

 

The elder of two Skillman drag racers competing this weekend showed off his driving prowess in the first day of the 2016 NHRA season. 

Ray Skillman doubled up during the first day of sportsman qualifying at the Circle K NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, Ca.

Skillman, driving Mustangs in both Competition and Super Stock Eliminators, raced to the top of the list. 

Skillman, whose grandson Drew races in Pro Stock, leads Comp provisionally on the strength of a . 7.492, -0.778 effort with his B/Econo Altered entry.

Super Stock is complete, as Skillman behind the wheel of his Factory Stock Showdown/E entry posted an  8.986, -1.064 run to Ron Roddel's -1.05 under GT/LA effort.

One session of the alcohol classes in the books with  Don St. Arnaud opening up with a monster run for the dragsters with a 5.181 elapsed time at the third fastest mile per hour for the class, 285.05 miles per hour.  Funny Car was paced by John Lombardo Jr.'s 5.462 elapsed time. 

Thomas Auger's classic Mopar running in I/Stock Automatic will go into eliminations as the top seed thanks to a 11.172, -1.128 performance. Bob Gullett's G/Stock '68 Chevy II was second with a 10.820, -1.080. Darren Smith's G/Stock Automatic '64 Dodge was third with a 10.933, -1.067.
