TERRY BRIAN TOP FUEL LICENSING IN PHOENIX

While all the powerhouse Top Fuel and Nitro Funny Car teams are testing at NHRA’s Nitro Spring Training this week at Wild Horse Motorsports Park in Phoenix, Ariz., Terry Brian is on the opposite end of the spectrum.

The Texas driver is going to use the test session to get his Top Fuel license.

Brian has been racing a fuel altered since 2011, competing in the Outlaw Fuel Altered Association. He owns his own business, ProFab Custom Welding & Fabrication, serving Overton, Tyler, East Texas and Western Louisiana.

Brian’s Top Fuel dragster will have NHRA veteran Scott “Stacker” Gaddy as the crew chief. According to Gaddy, the dragster Brian will be driving is one he bought from Keith Murt.

“We’ve been putting this dragster together for the last year, and we made a couple of squirts with it after the Dallas (national event, Oct. 16),” Gaddy said. “We made a couple of 100-foot runs. Now, we are going to run Feb. 2-3 at Phoenix and try and get Terry’s license. We just have to make two full passes for him to upgrade (to get his license).”

Once Brian gets his license, Gaddy said Brian is tentatively planning on making his NHRA Top Fuel debut at the Spring Nationals April 20-22 at Royal Purple Raceway in Houston.

“The car when we tested before (in Dallas), even though it only made short runs, it was pretty respectable for the class,” Gaddy said. “I’m just glad to get back to the long cars (dragsters). The biggest thing we want to get accomplished in Phoenix is for (Terry) to get his license and we want to get all of our new crew guys working together so we have a good clean tune-up and the car isn’t hurting itself and we can be cost effective with this deal.”

Most recently, Gaddy was tuning the nitro Funny Car owned by Jeff and Chris Bennett. He also was a tuner for Doug Herbert’s Top Fuel dragster and he worked with Funny Car driver Bob Gilbertson and worked on cars driven by Melanie Troxel and Leah Pritchett.

Gaddy also runs his own business – Scott Gaddy Racing Parts & Equipment based in Charlotte, N.C.

“He (Terry) is going to play his race schedule by ear this year,” Gaddy said. “He’s looking for outside money, and we will go to as many races as he gets funded for.”
