THE SHADOW DESIGNED "ANGRY" BY STRANGE'S ART DEPARTMENT

Jeff Stange will never look at his shadow the same way.

The driving force behind the Strange Engineering brand was looking through images of famous fox-bodied grudge racing rides when he noticed Shadow, the famous Drag Radial entry driven by Stevie "Fast" Jackson and owned by noted NHRA tuner Phil Shuler.

Stange decided to have some fun.

"I want to team up with Phil and pay homage to the old Oakley paint schemes that were so cool," Stange explained.

Stange contacted Shuler, and together they developed a plan to wrap Shadow in an Oakley-inspired wrap. They decided to convey the car's history in a wrap with all the visionary traits of an old Scotty Cannon Funny Car.

"We went over the new direction of the Stevie Fast Racing tee shirts and other items that they have been designing, and our art director got straight to work," Stange said. "After many renditions were hammered out, the results are nothing less than jaw-dropping."

The design was the handiwork of Strange's art director Matthew Scott who described the project as challenging, considering the car has a legion of fans.

"You sweat a few bullets, say a prayer and get to work," admitted Scott, when asked about the creation process. "I read The Shadow comic books as a kid, so I had a good feel for the direction right off the bat. So I went to a local comic shop and thumbed through every Shadow comic they had. I felt like I had reunited with an old friend."

A few rough drawings later, Scott brought in Phil Delany of Rage Wraps and the two nailed down the specs for the potent Ford.

"I just designed angry," Scott said, admitting he was under the musical influence of Tool blaring in the background. "One of the things I always loved about The Shadow character is that he wasn’t big on capturing the bad guys for the authorities. With twin .45-caliber M1911’s blazing, he took down those in front of him, one fool at a time: sometimes, two. So the direction was pretty clear, and the concept stage was fairly minimal."

Scott presented his art to Stange and Shuler, who loved the direction.

So what did Scott do from there?

"I went back in and packed it with more skulls," said Scott. "Who doesn’t like more skulls? In the end, I think we did The Shadow justice and kept the lifeblood of the car true for the fans. Maybe we amped it – just a little."

Looks don't win races, but good parts do. With that said, Shadow is equipped with an arsenal of Strange Engineering components such as Strange Ultra Case with 10" gears, Strange Front & Rear Brakes, Strange Transmission yoke and Chrome Moly driveshaft, Strange GT Struts, Strange Master Cylinder, Strange Steering Coupler and Strange 40 spline Axles.

Jackson and Shuler plan to unveil the work of art at this season's No Mercy 7 at South Georgia Motorsports Park event in October and promoted by Duck X Productions.
