TJ, CODY COUGHLIN CHEERING FOR EACH OTHER THIS WEEKEND

T.J. Coughlin

The last name Coughlin is well-known in the motorsports world, especially in drag racing.

The family has numerous wins and world championships to its name.

This weekend, T.J. Coughlin and his cousin, Cody Coughlin, will be cheering for each other from afar.

T.J., 26, is preparing for his second career race driving the SealMaster Top Fuel dragster for Kalitta Motorsports in Phoenix at the Arizona Nationals Friday through Sunday at Wild Horse Motorsports Park.

Cody, 21, will be driving the ThorSport's No. 13 Toyota in his first full season in NASCAR’s Camping World Truck Series. Michael Shelton will serve as crew chief, and primary sponsorship will come from JEGS and Ride TV. Cody’s first race is the Nextera Energy Resources 250 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time at Daytona International Speedway.

“This weekend should be fun for us because there’s more to watch and more to do,” T.J. said. “We will have very little down time between us, but it will be fun for me to keep tabs on him and shoot him a text, a little bit of motivation. I will tell him to keep his chin up if something goes wrong or when he does well, I will give him a pump up to keep him going. He sends texts back and it’s really cool, it’s almost storybook.”

Cody has made 12 starts in the NASCAR’S Camping World Truck Series the past two years, but this year is the first time he has had a full-time ride in the series.

“This is very exciting,” Cody said. “This is something I always wanted to do, race (full-time) in a top series in NASCAR, and to be able to do that is pretty cool. I stay in contact with T.J. a good bit. We’re always encouraging one another when we are racing and I always try and watch what T.J. and the rest of my family is doing (racing) and root them on.”

Cody has drag racing roots, competing in Junior Dragsters for several years, before deciding to race in circles instead of a straight line.

“He did pretty well in Junior Dragsters, but he just wanted to be in a car a little bit longer and I don’t blame him one bit,” T.J. said. “I try to watch him race whenever I can and support his team, especially your family. I haven’t been to one of his races yet because we have always been racing, but I plan to go this year because he’s going to be at all the (Camping World Series) races.”

Cody Coughlin

Cody made a name for himself in the Late Model and ARCA ranks. Last season, he captured two Late Model titles in the Champion Racing Association.

“As far as the racing advice goes, it’s just not my realm of things over there so I wouldn’t know what to tell him other than to be aggressive,” T.J. said. “He definitely doesn’t need that memo, he’s one of the best kids out there. This has been a dream for both of us and I couldn’t be happier for him. He’s done a wonderful job. I will put his race (Friday) on my iPad, if it is on when we are racing, I’m sure it will be on when we get back from our runs. I’m sure I will catch it.”

Cody said he’s happy when T.J. passes on his knowledge to him.

“He’s very wise with focusing on the task at hand and just tidbits like that he gets to pass on to me, I certainly appreciate them very much,” Cody said. “T.J. has always been super passionate about his love of racing and drag racing in particular. I knew whatever path he chose, he would be good at it.”

T.J. acknowledged Cody also has been there for him as well.

“He has some pretty good words,” T.J. said. “He’s told me to keep at it and keep learning. He thinks it’s really cool what I’m doing.”

Although the Coughlin name has been established in drag racing, Cody was bitten by the NASCAR bug at an early age.

“I always enjoyed watching the (races) on TV and watching Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart and those guys battle every weekend was something that looked kind of fun,” Cody said. “We just kind of got involved with it and it has been a neat deal. For sure, I’m trying to make a name for Jegs in NASCAR. I think anytime we can extend our reach in the motorsports community it’s all going to be a positive for our company and I’m obviously proud to be able to do that. I enjoyed drag racing and it was neat, but I got a hankering for circle track racing later. I also could race a big circle track car before I was 18 and drag racing to get into a big car you had to be 18. That was a bit decision helper also.”

T.J. is thrilled be driving a Top Fuel dragster and he knows he has room to grow in this class.

“This has been a learning experience to say the least,” he said. “I really enjoy it. I love my guys and I feel really safe and confident with this group. I’m still kind of in a learning mode, getting used to the car, the way it feels, the way it works. I’m just trying to get my confidence-level higher and higher.”

T.J. took a moment to think about if he and Cody made it to Victory Lane this weekend.

“That would be huge, that would be a fairy tale of some sort,” he said. “I’m all in. We have a chance to do it.”

Cody concurred with his cousin.

“That’s the goal (for both of us to win this weekend),” Cody said. “That would be a heck of a story.”
