TORRENCE TAKES FIRST SHOT AT HOME TRACK CONQUEST

It’s been a season to remember for Top Fuel points leader Steve Torrence, yet two goals remain for the Kilgore, Texas, resident.

Torrence wants to grab his first NHRA Mello Yello championship and claim his first victory before his Texas supporters.

“It's always good to win at your home track. We've just not been able to do it. It's been elusive,” Torrence said.

With a track-record tying blast of 3.682-seconds 327.51 mph in the final session Friday, Torrence took step one in completing his Texas goal by shooting atop the qualifying charts in the AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex.

"Going into tomorrow, and ultimately Sunday, confidence is for sure at an all-time high," said Torrence, who was the quickest in both qualifying sessions

Torrence, who works for his family-owned pipeline business, said the opportunity to compete with his father, Billy, makes this Texas weekend even more special.

“Your racing Top Fuel, the pinnacle of NHRA with your family,” Steve Torrence said.  “I didn’t know what it felt like to have a child and put somebody you love in race a race car until my father's car got in. I was like, `Dad, this is a terrible idea.’ But it’s really cool to be able to do this with him and to have mom here supporting both of us. If we both make it to the finals, that would be icing on the cake for what is already a storybook season.”

Torrence, who currently holds a margin of 42 in Top Fuel points over Doug Kalitta, said he is focused on the bottom line this weekend.

“Ultimately at the end of the day, what we need to do is get points,” Torrence said.  “I've said before I think this championship could be decided by just a few points. To win here would be cool. But just need to go rounds and get points however we need to do it."

Tony Schumacher of the Don Schumacher Racing juggernaut is qualified No. 2 with teammate Antron Brown in third. Torrence leads fourth-place Brown by 99 points and Schumacher by 146.

Schumacher, a six-time Texas Motorplex winner, posted a time of 3.793 at 324.75 mph in his first session Friday.

“It was an outstanding run considering there's an incredibly fine line between going for it too much and not enough in these conditions on this track tonight,”  Schumacher said.
