2016 NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS - CHARLOTTE RESULTS

SUNDAY - FORCE, WILKERSON, LINE AND HINES EARN NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS VICTORIES

Brittany Force raced to her second victory of the season Sunday at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods, and became the first female driver to win the unique event.

Tim Wilkerson (Funny Car), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at the distinctive NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event where teams compete in a four-lane format.

Force held off the two-time defending winner of the race, Antron Brown, along with class veterans Doug Kalitta and Clay Millican to take the historic win at zMAX Dragway. Force powered her Monster Energy dragster to a final round performance of 3.764 seconds at 319.98 mph, while defending world champ Brown finished second with a 3.779 at 316.75 in his Matco Tools dragster.

“People say winning the first one is the toughest and it came in my fourth season,” Force said. “The second one came easier, but I wouldn’t say easy. Every single guy on this team is the hardest worker I know and I was so happy that we were able to pull it off. It’s insane. I am proud to be teamed up with [tuning consultant Alan Johnson and crew chief Brian Husen] and having a car that’s so consistent builds my confidence going into the season. The season is still getting started, but we are definitely off to a great start.”

Force was also quickest in her first two quads. She beat Brown, Pat Dakin and Leah Pritchett in the opening round and then raced past Brown, Richie Crampton and J.R. Todd in round two. She produced three straight 7.3-second runs to take the victory and extend her series points lead.

In addition to being the first woman to win a Four-Wide race, she’s also the first female to win in a nitro class at zMAX Dragway. She says all of the accolades coming her way are just surreal.

“I keep hearing these things,” Force said. “It’s big enough that we won, but to do it at the Four-Wide where it wasn’t easy for me. It was a struggle. I didn’t sleep last night. I had nightmares coming off [the final qualifying round] and you know you have to clear your mind and come into it. So to be able to overcome that and have a decent light in the final round when we really needed it, it feels good.”

Force, who advanced to seven finals before she finally won her first race last month in Gainesville, Fla., says she’s now ready to go for a third win next weekend in Houston. However, she admits that winning two of three finals in five races this season and leading the points for more consecutive weeks than any other female in a nitro class is beyond her wildest dreams.

“It didn’t seem real until they handed me the Wally,” Force recalled about her breakthrough victory at Gainesville last month. “It’s an incredible feeling and a proud feeling. All those years and all that hard work, it really made it worth it. For the second one to come this quickly it’s just amazing. Standing behind my team they are bad-ass and are capable of doing anything. They put a car together that ran consistently every single run. I am so proud of all of them.”

Wilkerson powered to his second Funny Car victory of the season and 20th of his career with a final round performance of 3.967 at 315.56 in his Levi Ray & Shoup Ford Mustang. He was followed across the finish line by Cruz Pedregon with a 3.995 at 313.37 in his Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry, and the trailing Don Schumacher Racing Dodge Chargers of NAPA Auto’s Ron Capps and Mopar’s Matt Hagan.

“I had a very good car,” Wilkerson said. “We don’t come here to chase girls and drink beer, we are here to kick some butts and go home. Me and [assistant crew chief] Richard Hartman are of the same philosophy and that’s why we communicate so well with each other. He has been a great addition to our team and he did a great job up there [on the starting line] today.”

Wilkerson’s machine was the class of the field, and in all three quads he finished first. He opened with a win against Jeff Diehl, top qualifier Alexis DeJoria and series points leader Robert Hight.  In round two he outran Pedregon, Courtney Force and Diehl.

“We go up there and hit the gas and see what happens,” Wilkerson said. “It’s just racing. If you get beat, you go home and try again next week. It’s a marathon. We have 24 races. Next race has a different challenge. I think they did a really nice job on all of these lanes this weekend. I think you could win out of any one of ‘em.”

In his 20-year career Wilkerson has won the prestigious U.S. Nationals and claimed victories at his home tracks in St. Louis and Chicago, but he admits the Wally from this event is also going to have a special place in his trophy case.

“I got this off my bucket list,” Wilkerson said. “I’ve been in the finals at this one twice, so I am really happy to get it done. I am excited about it. The whole year has really been exciting, especially with the new TV package and the way everything has been going. My buddy Brittany has won twice, so that’s really cool, too. I was happy to see her win. The Four-Wide is really a neat deal, especially since I won.”

Wilkerson is definitely off to his best start and moved to fourth in the points standings. He said his secret to success is nothing new.

“Hard work,” Wilkerson said with a smile. “They can outspend us, but they aren’t going to outwork us. We have a great group of kids. They try hard and they have a lot of heart.”

In Pro Stock, Line won his third race of the season in his fifth consecutive final round, posting a winning time of 6.565 at 211.33 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro and finishing in front of teammate Bo Butner, who trailed with a 6.591 at 210.77 in his Jim Butner Auto Camaro. Drew Skillman and Chris McGaha, also driving Camaros, were third and fourth in the quad final.

It was Line’s first Four-Wide Nationals win and the 40th victory of his career.

“We are taking a lot of pride in it,” said Line, who increased his series lead with the win, about his successful start to the season. “We had more engine changes than anybody else. It’s tough to win at home and I’ve never won the Four-Wide. I consider myself a middle of the road driver, so this race has always been tough for me. So to win this race is pretty gratifying.”

Line made his way to the final by beating Kenny Delco, Vincent Nobile and V. Gaines in the opener and then held off Skillman, Delco and defending world champ Erica Enders in round two.

Hines continued his mastery of the Four-Wide Nationals in Pro Stock Motorcycle and held off top qualifier Eddie Krawiec, Chip Ellis and Matt Smith to take the victory, his third in a row at this event and his sixth zMAX Dragway victory. Hines clocked a 6.844 at 194.42 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson, while Krawiec finished in 6.849 at 194.44 on his Harley-Davidson to take runner-up honors. It was points leader Krawiec’s fourth consecutive runner-up finish at this event.

“It’s great to come in here at the Four-Wide and get another win so we have our team going in the right direction,” Hines said. “I’m happy to get a win this early in the season. When you get that off your back you can sit back, relax and focus on racing the rest of the season.”

Hines became the third driver in NHRA history, joining Greg Anderson and Hight, and first in the bike class to finish second in both of the first two quads and then win the race. In the opener Hines finished second to Jerry Savoie, but in front of Brian Pretzel and Jim Underdahl. In round two, Hines trailed Krawiec, but finished in front of Savoie and Michael Ray.

“This race track just agrees with me, I feel very comfortable here,” Hines said. “It is almost a calming effect it has on me with everything that is going on up there because it makes me focus that much more.”

With his 43rd career victory, he is closing in on the 44 official victories that the late Dave Schultz won during his career.

“Thanks to Dave and all that he did for the sport, he was one of the pioneers of it all,” Hines said. “Thanks to him we have a great field right now and all of Pro Stock Motorcycle is very stout. We have bump spots that are setting records. It’s awesome to be involved in the class right now.”

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues April 29-May 1 with the NHRA SpringNationals at Royal Purple Raceway near Houston.

SATURDAY - DEJORIA, TORRENCE, ANDERSON AND KRAWIEC TAKE TOP QUALIFYING POSITIONS AT CHARLOTTE

Alexis DeJoria raced to the No. 1 qualifying position in Funny Car in front of a sold-out zMAX Dragway crowd Saturday at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also will lead their respective categories into Sunday’s noon eliminations as No. 1 qualifiers at the unique event that features NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series teams racing in a four-lane configuration.

DeJoria, who won the circuit’s most recent event in Las Vegas, continued her early season momentum by claiming her first No. 1 qualifying position of the season and fourth of her career with a track record time of 3.934 seconds at 321.04 mph in her Tequila Patron Toyota Camry.

DeJoria moved into the top qualifying spot on the day’s first attempt, powering to a 3.939-second run. She was even quicker in the final qualifying session.

“Tommy [DeLago, crew chief] got on the radio and said, 'Well, we didn't pick up as much as I wanted to," DeJoria said with a smile. “Another consistent .93. I didn’t think we were going to stay No. 1. There are a lot of great cars out there. Fortunately, we were the best one today. I'm just proud of my guys.”

DeJoria will try to earn her first Four-Wide Nationals victory and her second title of the season when she opens eliminations against Jeff Diehl, Phoenix winner Tim Wilkerson and series points leader Robert Hight.

“To actually finish the day in the No. 1 spot and get the track record that’s just incredible, I am just so proud of my guys,” DeJoria said. “Man, she’s a handful off the starting line and I’m surprised I could keep her in the groove and get her down to the end of the track. Fortunately they give me good equipment and it makes it easier.”

Friday qualifying leader Matt Hagan dropped to second in his Mopar Express Lane/Rocky Boots Dodge Charger with a 3.941 at a track record speed of 323.50 and will open eliminations against Daniel Wilkerson, Chad Head and Ron Capps.

John Force qualified third in his Peak Antifreeze Chevy Camaro SS with a 3.946 at 323.50 and will battle in a first-round foursome that includes Bob Tasca III, Jack Beckman and Tommy Johnson Jr.

In Top Fuel, Torrence will try to end a sluggish early season start that has included first round losses in the past three races when he opens with a quad that features a pair of former world champions. Torrence, who earned his third No. 1 of the season and eighth of his career with his Friday best of 3.736 at 326.48 in his Capco Contractors dragster, will face Terry Haddock, Shawn Langdon and Tony Schumacher in round one.

“I’m glad we stayed No. 1,” Torrence said. “J.R. [Todd] threw a pretty good lap at it there by going [3.74] in that last session. I feel confident going into tomorrow, we’ve got a really good race car right now.”

Torrence held on to the top spot despite a misstep during the final qualifying session where he mistakenly looked at the wrong set of bulbs on the Christmas Tree during the staging process. He thought he was staged, but wasn’t and was timed-out with a red-light at the start. The Christmas Trees used in the four-wide racing configuration have an additional set of bulbs that show each driver when all four cars are staged.

“I figured something was wrong when I saw the red light come on, but it wasn’t until I made the turnoff that I figured out I was the guy who didn’t stage the car,” Torrence said. “Driver mistake completely. You come here and do this [four-wide racing] once a year and I’ve never made a mistake before, but if you do it enough it’s bound to happen. You just get in your routine and I was focused on doing the best I could at the tree and just dropped the ball. I apologized to Alan [Johnson, tuning consultant]. I will just wipe it out of my mind and show up tomorrow ready to race.”

Todd posted Saturday’s quickest run in his SealMaster dragster with a 3.743 at 324.28 and he will open racing in a quad alongside Chris Karamesines, Richie Crampton and Terry McMillen.

Points leader Brittany Force qualified third with Saturday's second quickest-run, a 3.751 at 319.90 in her Monster Energy dragster, and she will line up beside veteran Pat Dakin, defending world champ Antron Brown and rival Leah Pritchett.

In Pro Stock, Anderson powered to his second No. 1 qualifying position of the season and the 82nd of his career with a performance of 6.576 at 210.41.  By qualifying, the four-time world champ moved past legendary Warren Johnson on the list of drivers with the most consecutive races qualified with 304 straight, most for a Pro Stock driver in NHRA history.

“We made two great runs today and all three of our cars are fast,” Anderson said. “Our guys did a fantastic job today and I am proud of them.”

Anderson will face Australian Shane Tucker, Chris McGaha and Allen Johnson in a tough first-round quad as he goes for his third Four-Wide Nationals victory and the 81st win of his career.

“Anything can happen on race day,” Anderson said. “When you’ve got four cars lined up and you look over and realize that any one of them can whup you, depending on who leaves the starting line first. Almost 99 percent of the racing in Pro Stock comes down to how well you do on that Christmas Tree.”

Sophomore sensation Drew Skillman qualified second in his Ray Skillman Chevy Camaro with a 6.583 at 209.72 and will open eliminations against John Gaydosh Jr., Alex Laughlin and defending world champ Erica Enders, who qualified 10th in her Elite Motorsports Dodge Dart.

Points leader Jason Line qualified third in his Summit Racing Camaro with a 6.584 at 211.10 and will go for his third victory of the season when he meets V. Gaines, Vincent Nobile and Kenny Delco in his first round quad.

Krawiec took his second No. 1 of the season and 29th of his Pro Stock Motorcycle career with his Friday run of 6.818 at 192.85 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. Three-time world champ Krawiec will race Melissa Surber, former champ LE Tonglet and Michael Ray in his opening round quad.

“I’ve got a bad to the bone Harley-Davidson right now and I’m excited to be riding it,” said Krawiec, the current points leader who won the season-opening bike race in Gainesville, Fla. “Ultimately I want to be in the media center on Sunday after a bunch of win lights. The No. 1 qualifier is just a bonus to that and give those accolades to the team because they are the ones who give me a fast bike. For me, I want to hold a Wally on Sunday.”

Two-time world champ Matt Smith made Saturday’s quickest run to qualify second on his NitroFish Victory Gunner with a 6.832 at 195.76. It is a nice rebound for Smith, who failed to qualify at the bike opener in Florida. His quad will also include veteran rider Steve Johnson, Chip Ellis and Scotty Pollacheck.

Defending world champ Andrew Hines, who has claimed the past two Four-Wide Wally trophies, qualified fourth on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson and will race Brian Pretzel, Louisiana alligator farmer Jerry Savoie and Jim Underdahl in his opening round quad.

FRIDAY - HAGAN, TORRENCE, ANDERSON, AND KRAWIEC LEAD CHARLOTTE QUALIFYING ON RAIN-SHORTENED DAY ONE

Two-time Funny Car world champ Matt Hagan reset both ends of the zMAX Dragway track record in racing to the qualifying lead Friday in a rain-shortened day of action at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals presented by Lowes Foods.

NHRA teams were only able to get in one of the two scheduled qualifying sessions before persistent rain showers moved into the area late in the afternoon. Qualifying continues Saturday with sessions scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday’s finals are set to begin at noon.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders at the distinctive event which features NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series teams competing in a four-lane configuration.

Hagan powered his Mopar Express Lane/ Rocky Boots Dodge Charger to the qualifying lead in Funny Car with a track-record performance of 3.941 seconds at 323.50 mph.

Hagan held off his old arch-rival, 16-time Funny Car world champion John Force, for the top spot. Force qualified second with a 3.946 at 323.50 in his Peak Antifreeze Chevy Camaro. Both drivers are past winners of the unique event.

“We needed that for our team, for [crew chief] Dickie Venables, for everybody that's been digging deep, working hard, trying to figure this stuff out,” said Hagan, who is off to a slow start this year with three first round losses in the first four events. “That was one good run. We're happy for this Mopar to run that well right off the trailer.”

Past Four-Wide Nationals No. 1 qualifier and finalist Chad Head was third in his Head Racing Toyota Camry with a 3.967 at 315.49 and Ron Capps rebounded from his DNQ in Las Vegas by qualifying fourth in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge with a 3.986 at 319.67. Las Vegas winner Alexis DeJoria is fifth in her Tequila Patron Camry with a 4.005 at 310.98. Her Kalitta Motorsports teammate, defending world champ Del Worsham, anchors the 12th spot in his DHL Camry.

Torrence, who won the season-opening NHRA Winternationals in Southern California but has struggled on race day in the last three events, paced the Top Fuel category with a 3.736 at 326.48 in his Capco Contractors dragster.

“We’ve had a really good car all season long but we’ve had three first round losses in a row and sort of stumped our toe,” Torrence said. “The same thing happened in Las Vegas [two weeks ago], we had an awesome car in qualifying and the track conditions changed and it bit us in the first round. The car has run unbelievable. That gives you a huge vote of confidence going into the next qualifying round and ultimately sets up the weekend for what you can build off of a lot better.”

Series points leader Brittany Force was second in her Monster Energy dragster, posting a 3.771 at 319.90. Gatornationals runner-up Terry McMillen qualified third in his Amalie Xtermigator dragster with a 3.833 at 314.17 and defending world champ Antron Brown rounded out the top five with a 3.838 at 315.49 in his Matco Tools dragster.

In Pro Stock, local favorite Anderson, who lives in nearby Mooresville, kept his early season momentum going by racing to the top of the order with a 6.577 at 209.65 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro. The four-time world champ has won two races this season in the new-look Pro Stock class, which features electronic fuel injection, flat hoods, shorter wheelie-bars and a 10,500 RPM rev-limiter.

“Honestly it looked bleak today with the forecast and we were thankful to get in one round,” said Anderson, a two-time winner of the Four-Wide Nationals. “We got some intel today. It has become very clear that the pack has made some gains. Now it’s time to get back to work and find some more performance for tomorrow to try and hang on to No. 1. The good news is we have great weather for the rest of the weekend.  The track is perfect and we can tune ‘em up and try to run better tomorrow.”

Last year’s top rookie Drew Skillman was second with a 6.583 at 209.72 in his Ray Skillman Chevy Camaro and points leader Jason Line is third with a 6.585 at 209.10 in his Summit Racing Equipment Camaro. Defending world champ Erica Enders sits eighth in her Elite Motorsports Dodge Dart with a 6.644 at 207.08.

Three-time Pro Stock Motorcycle world champ Krawiec was quickest in the two-wheel category, riding his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson to a 6.818 at 192.85.

“It made an awesome run,” Krawiec said. “Crew chief Matt [Hines] made all the right decisions and it ran killer to the first 60-foot and the track was good. In our quad we had four guys all go 80s. It’s really neat when you have that and it worked out with all the reaction times being close. So it probably was some neat finish line stuff for a picture. The end result was my Harley went 6.81. It was an awesome lap and I am looking forward to tomorrow.”

Louisiana alligator farmer Jerry Savoie is second on his White Alligator Racing Suzuki with a 6.841 at 197.62 and two-time defending Four-Wide Nationals winner Andrew Hines is third on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson with a 6.851 at 192.77.
