2016 NHRA K&N ROUTE 66 NATS - CHICAGO RESULTS

SCHUMACHER’S TEAMS DELIVER THIRD CONSECUTIVE DOUBLE UP FOR DECORATED TEAM OWNER

There's no place like home and for team owner Don Schumacher, a native Chicagoan, Route 66 Raceway is where he was able to hang his latest double-up.

Thanks to winning efforts from Don Schumacher Racing drivers Antron Brown [Top Fuel] and Jack Beckman [Funny Car], Schumacher earned his third consecutive double-up weekend and 56th overall at the NHRA K&N Filters Route 66 Nationals outside of Chicago.

Also scoring wins were Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle).

DSR's dominance has come from five different drivers since the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tenn.

"To double up here at Chicago, my home track and my home for many, many years is just a phenomenal feeling," said Schumacher, who fielded eight teams in competition this weekend. "It has been awesome to have the family, friends and company people here. I cannot express just how wonderful this makes me feel."

Funny Car racer Beckman joined the list of winners by ending a dry spell dating back to last season by beating Ron Capps in the final with a 3.95 elapsed time. Capps lost traction early in the run and lifted.

Beckman has had the car to beat since Sonoma last season but failed to turn the momentum into victories. He had four No. 1 qualifiers entering this weekend, and three final rounds but no wins.

"I thought we had so much momentum last year, and then we go to the Countdown and watch Del win the first two," Beckman explained. "We come back at Maple Grove and win that one and set the national record – and then we haven’t seen a winner’s circle since then. Even though we had been to three final rounds this year, we really didn’t have our car. We never made it more than 200 feet in any of those final rounds, and we were struggling. We set the national record this year, qualified No. 1 four times this year, but we just couldn’t put it together.

"We’d either run good in the heat and not in the cool track conditions or great on the hero conditions and couldn’t get it down the track in the heat. We just found some things with the car."

Top Fuel racer Brown vaulted to his fourth win of the season by outrunning J.R. Todd in the final round, 3.77, 321 to a 3.79, 322. The victory marked win No. 41 while racing Top Fuel.

We found new things that is making it better. We are on to something, and we are just going to keep improving upon that. Our deal is we try to win every race we go to. We compete at a high level, and our main goal is to come into a race and go out there and be efficient, and that means getting every drop out of this lemon every time.

"We need to be on that level to be where we want to be at like where we were last year," said Brown. "That’s the key right now, getting your team and car ready to go to battle (in the Countdown to the Championship)."

In winning, Brown climbed into the point lead for the first time this season.

“I don’t even think about it but it’s good that we got it," Brown explained. "Those 30 points are crucial. It’s hard to make up 30 points when you only have 24 rounds of racing to win a championship. That’s two rounds. That’s going to be very crucial, and we just have to keep working. Hopefully, we can sneak it out and get those points that we need to help us for that title defense.

"We have a boss that is very, very competitive that hates to lose. He gives you all the necessary pieces and tools, so there’s never excuses. He gives you the push you need when you need it. When we come out here to compete at a high level, and that’s all we can do to give to our boss man."

The more things change, the more they stay the same for the Pro Stock division.

A day after losing their first-ever pole position to a non-team car, two members of the three-car KB Racing operation met in the finals.

Anderson, the flagship driver for the team which includes Jason Line and Bo Butner, shook off qualifying shortcomings to race to the victory. He ran a 6.644, 209.01 to beat Butner to the stripe. This victory marks the sixth 2016 win for Anderson, and No. 84 career-wise, just win away from tying Bob Glidden on the all-time wins list.

Shane Gray, the only driver to qualify No. 1 besides a member of KB Racing, lost to Anderson in the semi-finals.

"We just had to flat out race today," said Anderson. "We didn't outpower anybody. We didn't outrun anybody. The pack is tightening up and we are in for one hell of a battle for the rest of the year. We are going to have to dig down deep and learn how to drive again."

Hines scored his second Pro Stock Motorcycle title of the season by beating a resurgent Angelle Sampey, 6.85, 194 to 6.89, 193. The victory marked the second of the season for Hines and fifth for the Screamin' Eagle Harley-Davidson team.

"The key to winning was being able to keep the bike straight," said Hines. "We had a bunch of cross wind here, but we stuck to it and got through it. We cut frame rails out of the bike, added some things here and there. We decided it wasn't working for us and went back to our normal chassis, and it worked out fine. We have it working so well; you can take your hands off the bar at 200 miles per hour and it will stay straight."

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues July 22-24 with the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway near Denver.

SATURDAY - HAGAN, FORCE, GRAY AND SMITH EARN NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITIONS AT CHICAGO

Matt Hagan thundered to the No. 1 qualifying position with a track record performance to lead the quickest Funny Car field in history Saturday at the K&N Filters Route 66 NHRA Nationals.

It was the second top qualifying effort of the season for Hagan, who navigated the Route 66 Raceway dragstrip under the lights in a track record time of 3.882 seconds at 331.12 mph in his Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger R/T.

Brittany Force (Top Fuel), Shane Gray (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also will lead their respective classes into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations as the No. 1 qualifiers at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event near Chicago.

Hagan was able to grab the top spot away from teammate Jack Beckman, who momentarily held the position following a run of 3.885 at a track record speed of 333.25 in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger.

“Dickie [Venables, crew chief] is very consistent and methodical and I am glad he’s my crew chief and that’s why we are number one,” said Hagan of his 23rd career No. 1 and first ever at Chicago. “It was a game-changer in this class from Sonoma on last year with the change to the headers and that’s why these Funny Cars are so competitive now. It all comes down to the parts and pieces that are in front of us and making small tweaks to them here and there.”

Hagan, a three-time Chicago winner, will try for his third victory of the season when he meets round one foe Bob Bode, who anchored the quickest 16-car Funny Car field in NHRA history with his time of 4.100 seconds in a Toyota Solara.

“It’s all about momentum out here,” said Hagan, a two-time world champ. “If being No. 1 qualifier doesn’t give you confidence then nothing will. That is a huge run for us, for me personally and for our team. You will sleep better tonight and feel like you have a really good race car going into tomorrow.”

Beckman will race John Hale, while No. 3 qualifier Alexis DeJoria, who moved into that spot with a 3.887 at 327.11 in her Tequila Patron Toyota Camry, will battle Brian Stewart. Friday qualifying leader and series points leader Ron Capps will start fourth in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger with a 3.888 at 328.78 and will meet 16-time world champ John Force in a highly anticipated opener.

In Top Fuel, Brittany Force earned her second No. 1 qualifying position of the season and sixth of her career by virtue of her Friday track record time of 3.692 at 325.69 in her Monster Energy dragster. She will race the ageless Chris Karamesines, a Chicago native, in round one.

“The main focus today was getting two consistent runs down the track today and we were able to do that, and we had four good runs all weekend, so that’s exactly where we want to be,” Force said. “Being No. 1, that just tops everything. I think we are comfortable and confident going in and I am looking forward to seeing what we can do tomorrow.”

Steve Torrence powered to the No. 2 spot with a Saturday-best of 3.731 at 327.03 in his Capco Contractors dragster and will race another Chi-Town drag racing legend, Luigi Novelli, in the first round. Series points leader Doug Kalitta qualified third in the Mac Tools dragster with a 3.732 at a track record speed of 330.55 and will meet Kyle Wurtzel in round one as he goes for his fourth victory of the season.

In Pro Stock, Gray became the first driver of the season from outside the KB Racing team to earn a No. 1 qualifying position. His Friday effort of 6.578 at 209.43 in his Valvoline/Nova Services Chevy Camaro gave him his sixth top qualifying effort of his career and his first at Chicago. He will try for his first win of the season when he faces Alan Prusiensky in round one.

“I am real pleased with the progress we made today and I am really stoked about race day tomorrow and I think we have a good shot,” Gray said. “I don’t try to get too far ahead of myself but I would say we have caught up to [the Summit Racing team] at this race. We’ll see how we are doing a few more races down the road. We’ve got a core group of guys that have been with me for seven years and we are like family. We are having fun out here, so look out.”

Rising star Bo Butner qualified second in his Jim Butner Auto Camaro with a 6.596 at 210.21 and he will meet local favorite Kevin Lawrence in the first round. Series points leader Jason Line qualified third in his Summit Racing Camaro with a 6.598 at 209.95 and will meet Mark Hogan, while four-time world champ Greg Anderson qualified fourth in his Summit Camaro at 6.610 at 209.30 and will race Dave River.

Smith rode to his first No. 1 qualifying position of the season, 24th of his career and second at Chicago in Pro Stock Motorcycle as no one was able to better his Friday track record time of 6.842 at 195.51. It was his first No. 1 in well over a year, since Gainesville 2015.

“It feels good to be back up top,” Smith said. “We know we have a top four or five bike. Luckily we got in the running and got the top spot yesterday. We almost were quickest today. The bike is running good and is consistent. Hopefully we can turn on some win lights tomorrow. We need to get Victory their first win.”

He opens eliminations on his Victory Gunner against former teammate Michael Ray as he tries to win at this track for the first time after posting three previous runner-up finishes.

“I like this place, this track has a lot of teeth to it,” Smith added. “The facility is just awesome. We’ve always done good here and hopefully we can parlay that into a final round tomorrow.”

Points leader Eddie Krawiec moved to second in the final qualifying order on his Vance & Hines Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson with a 6.845 at 193.93 and he will race Michael Phillips in the opener. Two-time world champ and recent Englishtown winner Angelle Sampey will start third on her Star Racing Buell with a 6.853 at 195.59 and will meet Jim Underdahl in the opener.

FRIDAY - FORCE, CAPPS, GRAY AND SMITH LEAD QUALIFYING AT ROUTE 66 NHRA NATS

Brittany Force led a parade of track record performances Friday at the K&N Filters Route 66 NHRA Nationals by powering to the qualifying lead in Top Fuel.

Ron Capps (Funny Car), Shane Gray (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders in their classes at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at Route 66 Raceway near Chicago.

Force, a two-time winner this season, celebrated her 30th birthday by posting the fourth quickest Top Fuel elapsed time in history, a track record of 3.692 seconds at 325.69 mph in her Monster Energy dragster.

“I was shocked that we ran that because it was such a big jump from what we ran earlier,” said Force, who improved from third to first in the qualifying order with the effort. “It felt good. I got out and thanked my team, crew chief [Brian Husen] and Alan Johnson [consultant]. They are the ones who make it happen and it really is a team effort. To run a number like that and be No. 1 is exactly where we want to be and it is the absolute best birthday present ever.”

Series leader Doug Kalitta, a three-time winner this season, qualified second in his Mac Tools dragster with a 3.732 at a track record speed of 330.55. Shawn Langdon, who enters this event riding a two-race winning streak, was third in his Sandvik/ Red Fuel dragster with a 3.739 at 327.19. Native Chicagoan Tony Schumacher, a five-time winner at this track, sits fourth in his U.S. Army dragster with a 3.744 at 326.63.

Capps, who has won three of the last four races and earned four No. 1 qualifying positions this season in Funny Car, continued the red-hot trend by covering the distance with a track record time of 3.888 at 328.78 in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T.

“Man I am loving this right now, it is so much fun,” said Capps, the series points leader. “I am so proud of [crew chief] Rahn Tobler and what we’ve done. When we left Topeka we were close, but Rahn and the guys worked so hard between races to give us what we’ve needed and in New Hampshire it just showed and we’ve been able to keep it going from there.”

Local favorite Tim Wilkerson, of Springfield, Ill., was second in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Mustang, clocking a 3.894 at a track record speed of 330.23 mph. Robert Hight qualified third in his Auto Club Chevy Camaro with a 3.894 at 325.22. Three-time Chicago winner Matt Hagan is fourth with a 3.895 at 330.07 in his Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger.

Gray momentarily broke the stranglehold that Jason Line and Greg Anderson have had over the Pro Stock class by posting the day’s quickest run. Gray powered his Valvoline/Nova Services Chevy Camaro to a leading time of 6.578 at 209.43 to pace the 16-car field.

“I think we are catching up we just need to find the consistency to go and repeat what we did tonight, tomorrow,” Gray said. “It showed tonight that we’ve got it. We’re capable. I’ve got a wonderful group of guys from [crew chief] Dave Connolly on down and great guys in the engine shop. My dad [retired Funny Car driver Johnny Gray] has supported this deal for seven years and we couldn’t do it without him for sure. Everything is starting to come around and it’s actually fun to be at the race track.”

Bo Butner trailed Gray with a 6.596 at 210.21 in his Jim Butner Auto Camaro and series leader Line was third in his Summit Racing Camaro with a 6.599 at 210.01. Anderson is fourth with a 6.610 at 209.30 in his Summit Camaro.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, two-time world champ Smith was quickest on his Victory Gunner setting a track record time of 6.842 seconds at 195.51 mph.

“Our Victory Gunner is running strong,” Smith said. “We’ve done a lot of work and did a lot of testing. We’ve had a lot of gremlins and bugs that have bit us this year. When we qualify we are fast. We’ve been very, very good when we’ve gone down the track and hopefully it will stand up and be No. 1 tomorrow. I know it is supposed to be cooler, but we are going to swap motors tomorrow. We have a good piece here and we will put it back in on Sunday if we need to.”

Veteran rider Steve Johnson qualified second on his RaceTheVote.com Suzuki with a 6.854 at 195.76 and was followed by 2010 champ LE Tonglet, who posted a 6.865 at 195.82 on his Nitro Fish Suzuki. Points leader Eddie Krawiec sits sixth on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson.

Qualifying continues Saturday with rounds at 3:15 and 6 p.m. to set the fields for Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations.
