2016 NHRA MIDEST NATIONALS - EVENT COVERAGE

LANGDON, BECKMAN, LAUGHLIN and SAVOIE RACE TO VICTORY AT MIDWEST NATIONALS

Shawn Langdon raced to his third victory of the year Sunday at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park just outside of St. Louis.

Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Alex Laughlin (Pro Stock) and Jerry Savoie (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also victorious in their respective categories at the 20th event of 24 on the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule. The AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals is the second race of the six-race NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

Langdon powered his Red Fuel / Sandvik Coromant dragster to a 3.798-second pass at 323.66 mph to defeat eight-time world champion Tony Schumacher’s 3.783 at 317.49 in his U.S. Army dragster on a holeshot. Langdon notched his 14th career win and first at Gateway Motorsports Park. The 2013 Top Fuel world champion moved to fourth in the points. He outlasted reigning world champ and points leader Antron Brown, three-time 2016 event winner Doug Kalitta and No. 1 qualifier Richie Crampton en route to the final round.

“We didn’t really have a dominant car in qualifying, but we just kept picking away at it,” said Langdon, who also won at Britol, Tenn., and Norwalk, Ohio. “That’s what we’ve been doing since we got those two victories (earlier this year). The car has just responded well. All in all, this was a great team effort. The whole team did a great job and gave me a great racecar today.”

Schmuacher, the most successful Top Fuel driver in NHRA history, qualified second and outlasted Chris Karamesines, Phoenix winner Leah Pritchett and Sonoma winner J.R. Todd before meeting Langdon in the final.

Brown held his grip on the points lead despite the early exit and is followed by Kalitta in second and Schumacher in third.

Beckman posted a 3.928 at 324.51 in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T to better Tommy Johnson Jr.’s 4.185 at 231.40 in his Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger R/T during the Funny Car final round. Beckman, the 2012 Funny Car world champion, claimed his 24th career victory and second at Gateway Motorsports Park with the performance. The 2015 season runner-up moved to third in the points standings. Beckman beat Dale Creasy Jr., 16-time champion and recent Charlotte, N.C., winner John Force and points leader Ron Capps in the earlier rounds.

“Our team was in a slump and we did what was incredibly difficult with the way our car was acting unpredictably,” said Beckman, who won earlier this year in Chicago. “I’m not quite sure what changed, but I think I had a good outing as a driver today, the guys tuned smart and we turned on the win-light every time.”

Johnson Jr., who won earlier this year in Bristol, Tenn., raced past Las Vegas winner Alexis DeJoria, No. 1 qualifier Robert Hight and two-time 2016 winner Tim Wilkerson to make his fourth final round appearance of the season. Johnson Jr. jumped to second in the points standings.

In Pro Stock, Laughlin sprinted to his first career final round appearance and victory by powering his Gas Monkey Garage Chevy Camaro to a 6.611 at 208.68 to outlast Butner’s 6.637 at 209.26 in his Jim Butner Auto Chevy Camaro. Laughlin, competing in only his second year in Pro Stock, did not qualify for the Countdown to the Championship. He knocked down Seattle winner Aaron Strong, two-time 2016 runner-up Vincent Nobile and No. 1 qualifier Shane Gray before meeting Butner in the final.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” said Laughlin. “It’s not even real at this point. This has got to be a dream. The whole day has been a blur. Took it one round at a time and ended up coming up to the final. I was a little nervous but took a couple deep breadths and told myself, ‘It’s just like any other round, just go up there and do your deal.’ As soon as I let the clutch out, I knew my crew chief gave me a good car.”

Butner, still pursuing his first career victory, earned his fifth runner-up finish of the season and sixth of his career with the performance. He raced past Mark Hogan, Indianapolis winner Chris McGaha and points leader Jason Line before losing to Laughlin in the final. Butner improved to third in points with the runner-up finish.

Alligator farmer and Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Jerry Savoie rode to his first victory of 2016 with a 6.933 at 189.36 on his White Alligator Racing Suzuki, defeating Angelle Sampey’s 6.852 at 195.85 on her Star Racing / Precision Service Equipment Buell in an all-Louisiana final. Sampey left the starting line early and red-lighted, giving Savoie the go-ahead victory. Savoie, who had not won a race since 2015 in Dallas, tallied his fifth career win and second at St. Louis. The victory moved Savoie up to fourth in the points standings.

“You go to the finals four times and win one, but out here the competition is so strong and it takes a little bit of luck,” said Savoie, who outlasted veteran Steve Johnson, Matt Smith and rookie Cory Reed in the earlier rounds. “We got some luck in the finals. Losing hurts so bad, but winning feels so good. My team is a great team. Our bike is really consistent and we’ve had some issues, but today was our day.”

Sampey, who won for the first time since 2007 earlier this year in Englishtown, N.J., made her third final round appearance of the season by riding past Angie Smith, Hector Arana and Charlotte winner Chip Ellis. She moved to second in points.

Andrew Hines remains the Pro Stock Motorcycle points leader, Ellis dropped to third and Eddie Krawiec dropped to fifth.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series will continue with the 21st event of the season and third of the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship sept. 29-Oct. 2 with the Dodge NHRA Nationals in Reading, Pa.

SATURDAY - CRAMPTON, HIGHT, GRAY AND KRAWIEC SECURE NO. 1 QUALIFIERS IN ST. LOUIS

Richie Crampton powered to the No. 1 qualifier in Top Fuel Saturday at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park just outside of St. Louis.

Robert Hight (Funny Car), Shane Gray (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the 20th event of 24 on the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule. The AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals is the second race of the six-race NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

Crampton used his Friday night performance of 3.733-seconds at 323.50 mph in his Lucas Oil dragster to earn his second No. 1 qualifier of the season and fifth of his career. Crampton, from Adelaide, South Australia, posted a runner-up finish earlier this year in Sonoma, Calif., but has not yet won an event in 2016. He will look to improve on his 10th place points standing as he opens eliminations against Kebin Kinsley Sunday morning.

“We were trying to get down the racetrack today and it just didn’t work out, but to get a good run on the board Friday night is really important,” said Crampton, a seven-time event winner. “It was a good run yesterday and I’m sure we left a little bit on the table today. We were just a little underpowered today in both sessions and maybe just treaded a little bit too lightly.”

Tony Schumacher, an eight-time Top Fuel world champion, qualified second with a 3.740 at 325.30 in his U.S. Army dragster. The two-time St. Louis winner will open eliminations against the ageless Chris Karamesines.

Sonoma winner J.R. Todd sits in the No. 3 spot with a 3.750 at 321.58 in his SealMaster dragster. Todd is paired with Kyle Wurtzel in the first round. Three-time St. Louis winner and three-time 2016 event winner Doug Kalitta is fourth and matched up with Terry McMillen while Shawn Langdon is fifth and will battle reigning champion and current Top Fuel points leader Antron Brown Sunday morning.

In Funny Car, Hight also used his Friday night performance to head into Sunday’s eliminations as the category’s No. 1 qualifier. Hight’s 3.893 at 328.38 in his Auto Club Chevy Camaro during Friday’s second session was enough to earn him his first top qualifier of the season and 48th of his career. The Gainesville, Fla., event winner will go up against John Hale to open eliminations.

“Saturday is more condusive to what you’re going to race in on Sunday,” said Hight. “Basically, three of the four runs we were low-E.T. and that gives you a lot of confidence. That third run, we were still pushing hard. Sometimes it’s nice to know your limit so you don’t find that limit on Sunday. It’s been a great weekend and I’m excited about tomorrow. I’m more excited about tomorrow’s race-day than I have been in a long time.”

Jack Beckman qualified second in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T with a 3.907 at 325.22. The 2012 event winner and 2015 season runner-up will race Dale Creasy Jr. in the first round of eliminations.

Points leader Ron Capps is third with a 3.910 at 322.81 in his NAPA Dodge Charger R/T and will battle John Bojec Sunday morning. Tim Wilkerson is fourth and will meet Brian Stewart while Matt Hagan is fifth and paired with Cruz Pedregon.

Shane Gray earned his second No. 1 qualifier of the season in Pro Stock with a 6.604 at 209.42 in his Gray Motorsports Chevy Camaro. Gray, who raced to the top spot in Chicago, has seven No. 1 qualifiers in his career and is seventh in points. He will race David River in the opening round of Sunday’s eliminations.

“I’m real confident with the car for tomorrow,” said Gray, who has never won at St. Louis. “The way I see it now is the only person that can screw this up is me. We’ve got a good car and it’s making good runs. We’ll see what tomorrow brings.”

Bo Butner, who has four runner-up finishes this season in his Jim Butner Auto Chevy Camaro, is second with a 6.605 at 209.17. Butner is fourth in points and will meet Mark Hogan Sunday morning.

Greg Anderson qualified third with a 6.605 at 209.07 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro. The seven-time 2016 event winner will go heads up with Alan Prusiensky in the first round. Vincent Nobile, looking for his first win of the season, is fourth and paired with Deric Kramer while Alex Laughlin is fifth and matched with Seattle event winner Aaran Strong.

Pro Stock points leader Jason Line is qualified sixth and will go heads-up with back-to-back and reigning world champion Erica Enders.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Krawiec rode his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson to a 6.819 at 197.02 to earn his sixth No. 1 qualifier of the season and 33rd of his career. The two-time St. Louis winner and three-time world champion is currently fourth in points after a first round loss last weekend in Charlotte. He will open eliminations against Joe DeSantis.

“We didn’t think we were going to run that number but we were picking away at it a little bit at a time,” said Krawiec, who has two career top qualifiers at Gateway Motorsports Park. “This last session, it was drying out a little more. That definitely helped aspirate the motorcycle. We didn’t think it was going to run that fast, but all the stars aligned. We know we have a great motorcycle, it’s just up to us to tune it right and it’s easier said than done.”

Angelle Sampey qualified second with a 6.831 at 197.02 on her Star Racing / Precision Service Equipment Buell. Sampey, who claimed her first victory since 2007 earlier this season in Englishtown, N.J., leads the category with three career wins at Gateway Motorsports Park and is currently third in points. She will race Angie Smith in the first round.

Charlotte winner Chip Ellis is slotted third with a 6.850 at 196.53 on his PiranaZ / Pippin Motorsports Buell. Ellis, in second place, is paired with Jim Underdahl to open eliminations. Alligator farmer Jerry Savoie is fourth and will race veteran Steve Johnson while Matt Smith is fifth and will battle rookie Melissa Surber Sunday morning. Points leader Andrew Hines qualified sixth and will race defending event winner Hector Arana Jr. in the first round.

FRIDAY - HIGHT, CRAMPTON, ANDERSON AND ELLIS LEAD QUALIFYING FRIDAY AT MIDWEST NATIONALS

Robert Hight sprinted to the provisional No. 1 qualifier in Funny Car Friday at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park.

Richie Crampton (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Chip Ellis (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders in their respective categories at the 20th event of 24 on the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule. The AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals is the second race of the six-race NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

Hight pushed his Auto Club Chevy Camaro SS to a 3.893-second pass at 328.38 mph during Friday’s second qualifying session to lead the Funny Car pack. Hight, who won this event in 2010, has 47 No. 1 qualifiers in his career but has not qualified better than third so far this season. He won in Gainesville, Fla., earlier in the year and is currently seventh in the points standings.

“This was a big day for us, but it’s only one day,” said Hight, the 2009 Funny Car world champion. “We tested on Monday, me and John (Force), and it’s really hard to judge your performance and gauge because you don’t have other cars there. You don’t really know until you go to the next race track and you’ve got other cars. So, to go out there and be No. 1 two runs in a row today with all the changes we’ve made on the car, that really shows how good my team is.”

Jack Beckman is second in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T with a 3.907 at 325.22. The Chicago event winner, who fell to eighth in points after a first round loss last weekend in Charlotte, N.C., won this event in 2012 en route to his only Funny Car world championship crown.

In third is two-time 2016 event winner Tim Wilkerson, who raced to a 3.912 at 325.61 in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang.

Two-time world champion Matt Hagan is fourth and is followed by Houston winner Courtney Force and reigning Funny Car world champion Del Worsham in fifth and sixth, respectively. Points leader Ron Capps is seventh while Charlotte winner and 16-time Funny Car world champion John Force is currently slotted 15th.

In Top Fuel, Crampton navigated the dragstrip in 3.733 at 323.50 at the controls of this Lucas Oil dragster to take the qualifying lead. The Adelaide, South Australia native has one No. 1 qualifier this year and four in his career. Crampton posted a runner-up finish earlier this season in Sonoma, Calif., but is still chasing his first win of 2016.

“In the Countdown is when you want to start running your best,” said Crampton, who is 10th in points. “You can’t start a weekend much better than being on the pole and hopefully that will give us a softer first round draw on Sunday but we can’t take anyone lightly anymore either. It doesn’t mean a huge amount in the big scheme of things to me, because now it’s about what we can do in the hot weather on Sunday.”

Doug Kalitta is second with a 3.752 at 325.92 in his Mac Tools dragster. Kalitta, a three-time St. Louis winner, has raced to three victories this season and is second in the points standings.

Tony Schumacher, an eight-time world champ, is third with a 3.757 at 320.58 in his U.S. Army dragster. The winningest Top Fuel driver in NHRA history is a two-time St. Louis winner and currently sits fifth in points.

Sonoma winner J.R. Todd is currently qualified fourth and is followed by Phoenix winner Leah Pritchett in fifth. Reigning Top Fuel champion and points leader Antron Brown is in the 12th spot.

Greg Anderson took the qualifying lead in Pro Stock with a 6.607 at 209.30 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro. Anderson, second in points, has six No. 1 qualifiers this year and 86 in his career. He posted a runner-up finish last weekend in Charlotte to open the Countdown and has notched seven wins this season. Anderson is a four-time Pro Stock world champion.

“We were right on the money and then we got the big weather swing tonight when the sun was hiding behind the clouds,” said Anderson, who won this event in 2004. “We hadn’t run a nice session like this for quite a while so we were ready to come on up here and make some minor changes from the first run today and then we got the delay and that changed everything. You’ve got to race the conditions you have and I know this isn’t going to matter for Sunday, but that position on the ladder might matter come Sunday. The good news is we’ve got a great set up for both a hot track and for when the sun goes down.”

Shane Gray is qualified second in his Gray Motorsports Chevy Camaro with a 6.609 at 209.65. Gray qualified No. 1 earlier this year in Chicago but is still hunting his first victory of the season. He is seventh in points.

Texan Alex Laughlin is third with a 6.610 at 209.14 in his Gas Monkey Garage Chevy Camaro. Laughlin, 11th in points, did not make the Countdown cut but will look to upset some racers eligible for the championship as he chases his first career victory.

Vincent Nobile, a two-time 2016 runner-up, is fourth and is trailed by four-time 2016 runner-up Bo Butner in fifth and points leader and eight-time 2016 winner Jason Line in sixth.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Ellis rode his Pirana Z / Pippin Motorsports Buell to a 6.850 at 196.53 to earn the qualifying lead. Ellis, who won last weekend in Charlotte and moved up to second in points, has 16 No. 1 qualifiers in his career and is two sessions away from his first in 2016. Ellis won this event in 2006 and finished a career-high third in points in 2007.

“It’s pretty amazing,” said Ellis. “This last week, we’ve just kept pinching ourselves to see if this has really happened. To come and do as well as we have so far and go low both rounds today, I’m just excited for our team. For me, it’s exciting, but for our team, I’m really excited for these guys. We work really hard and we’re a small team.”

Hector Arana, who raced to a runner-up finish at the season opener in Gainesville, is second with a 6.880 at 195.34 on his Lucas Oil Buell. Arana, eighth in points, is the 2015 AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals runner-up.

Alligator farmer Jerry Savoie and his White Alligator Racing Suzuki are third with a 6.881 at 194.88. Savoie, the 2014 St. Louis winner, is sixth in points. Eddie Krawiec, a three-time world champion, is qualified fourth and followed by Englishtown, N.J., winner Angelle Sampey in fifth and reigning world champ and points leader Andrew Hines in sixth.

Qualifying for the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports will resume Saturday with two sessions at 1:45 and at 4:15 p.m. Eliminations are set to begin Sunday at 11 a.m.
