2016 NHRA SUMMERNATIONALS - ENGLISHTOWN RESULTS

SAMPEY, TORRENCE, CAPPS, AND ANDERSON RACE TO VICTORY AT NHRA SUMMERNATIONALS IN ENGLISHTOWN

Angelle Sampey raced to her first Pro Stock Motorcycle victory since 2007 on Sunday at the NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Ron Capps (Funny Car) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) also were winners of the 10th NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event of the season.

Sampey powered her Star Racing Buell to a 6.876-second pass at 194.41 mph to defeat Jerry Savoie’s 6.928 at 177.21 on his Savoie’s Alligator Farm Suzuki. The win was her first since 2007 in Houston and 42nd of her career. She became the fifth female to win an event this season while the NHRA Summernationals is the sixth event of the year to feature a female victor.

“I know this is my 42nd win but it feels like my first ever,” said Sampey, the winningest female in NHRA history. “I don’t feel like I had any wins before today. I’m starting all over again and I had something to prove and it took a while.

“I feel totally responsible to show my daughter what she can do with her life,” Sampey continued. “Now I can show her that even if you aren’t winning every weekend but if you just keep trying, you’re going to get it. Showing her and being her role model – I don’t have the words for it.”

Sampey had to race past the Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson team of Andrew Hines and Eddie Krawiec, who have collectively claimed the first three victories of the season, in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively, to get to the finals.

In Top Fuel, Torrence piloted his Capco Contractors / Torrence Racing dragster to 4.037 at 281.71 for his second win of the 2016 season and seventh of his career. Torrence outlasted Tony Schumacher’s 4.234 at 268.28 in his U.S. Army dragster in the final. Torrence claimed the seventh victory his career and second at Raceway Park. He is third in the points standings.

“This is huge,” said Torrence. “This is home for my team I’m proud to have contributed to this win, I got it for them. We’ve been so fortunate and blessed. We’ve got a race car that has been impeccable and the only fault has been me some of the time. We are going to count our blessings and just keep going.”

In the earlier rounds, Torrence had to race past Smax Smith, J.R. Todd, and two-time winner this season Brittany Force. Schumacher faced off against Terry McMillen, teammate and defending world champion Antron Brown, and Shawn Langdon to get to the finals.

Capps picked up his second consecutive victory and third of the season with a 3.954 at 316.90 in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T by defeating Jack Beckman’s 7.894 at 85.05 in his Infinite Hero Dodge Charger R/T in the final round. Capps, who tallied his 48th career win, took the points lead with the victory.

“It’s great,” Capps said. “It’s something you hope will happen at the end of the day. With the competition, you can’t imagine it will go as planned or easy. We’re just taking it a little bit at a time. I almost felt embarrassed driving this car today because it’s just so good. You don’t want to mess up when it’s that good. It’s your race to lose.”

En route to his win, Capps defeated John Hale, 16-time world campion John Force and defending world champion Del Worsham. Beckman was tasked with getting past Las Vegas winner Alexis DeJoria, Atlanta and Topeka winner Matt Hagan and Jeff Diehl to get to the finals.

In Pro Stock, Anderson won his fifth victory of the season, 83rd of his career and seventh at Englishtown with a 6.610 at 210.93 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro over teammate Jason Line, who red lighted. Anderson has raced to seven final round appearances so far this season.

“It’s unreal,” Anderson said, “It’s just absolutely been a dream season. I keep wanting to pinch myself. It’s just cool and we’ve had such a great run. This was another great weekend. It’s just one more time that Englishtown tells me how much it loves me and how much the fans up here appreciate Pro Stock.”

Anderson’s win continues the Ken Black Racing domination of the season. He and Line have won all 10 of the events so far. Line holds the points lead with Anderson in second and their KB racing teammate Bo Butner is third.

NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing will continue June 17-20 with the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol, Tenn.

COUGHLIN RACES TO FIRST PRO MOD WIN OF SEASON AT NHRA SUMMERNATIONALS

Troy Coughlin raced to his first victory of the 2016 season on Sunday during the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the NHRA Summernationals. This weekend’s Pro Mod racing is the fourth of 10 events on the 2016 season.

Coughlin, making his first final round appearance of 2016, powered his JEGS.com late model Corvette to a 5.878-second pass at 255.29 mph to defeat Bill Glidden’s 7.320 at 137.92 in his Mickey Thompson Ford Mustang.

"What a day," Coughlin said. "For the whole JEGS.com team, coming into this race fifth in points and with a race car that's a competitor, it's great to get this win. We've just had a couple burdens here and there, but (crew chief) Steve (Petty) got it fixed up, and Mike (Rees) and Kyle (Pettis) put it together. We had a good hot rod all race. I'm pretty excited about it, for sure."

This is Coughlin’s seventh career victory. SATURDAY - TORRENCE, CAPPS, LINE AND KRAWIEC EARN NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITIONS AT NHRA SUMMERNATIONALS

Steve Torrence claimed his fifth No. 1 qualifier of the season in Top Fuel on Saturday at the NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Ron Capps (Funny Car), Jason Line (Pro Stock), and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) will also lead their respective categories into eliminations at the 10th race of the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Torrence, who won the season opener in Pomona, Calif., piloted his Capco Contractors/ Torrence Racing dragster to a 3.735-second pass at 325.06 mph on Friday to propel him into eliminations as the top qualifier. Torrence, who won in Englishtown in 2012, will line up against Smax Smith in the first round of eliminations Sunday morning.

“I had no expectations of the car coming out this year and running as well as it has,” said Torrence, who posted a runner-up finish last weekend in Epping, N.H. “I had five No. 1 qualifiers coming into this season and we’ve had five in this season already. So far it’s been a storybook season and we’re just going to try and maintain that consistency.”

Fan favorite and 2015 Summernationals winner Antron Brown qualified second with a 3.742 at 317.94 in his Matco Tools dragster. Brown, the two-time and defending Top Fuel world champion from Chesterfield, N.J., will face Terry Haddock in round one. Shawn Langdon and his Red Fuel / Sandvik Coromant dragster qualified third and will face Shawn Reed. Brittany Force and her Monster Energy dragster are fourth and will race Luigi Novelli while points leader Doug Kalitta is fifth and will face off against Leah Pritchett Sunday morning.

Capps’ elapsed time track record of 3.870 at 318.62 in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T from the first round of qualifying on Friday earned him his third No. 1 qualifier of the season and 20th of his career. He has posted 12 consecutive three-second runs in his Dodge Charger R/T. Capps, who won last week in Epping, N.H., will face John Hale to open eliminations.

“It feels good,” said Capps, who was also the No. 1 qualifier in Epping last week. “It’s been great and I love the horse I get to ride right now. It’s fun but I’ve been around long enough doing this that you don’t try to expect anything or get too confident or cocky so we’ll just keep going a little bit at a time.”

Matt Hagan remains in the second spot in his Mopar Express Lane / Rocky Boots Dodge Charger R/T with a 3.901 at a track record speed of 326.71. Hagan, who won back-to-back races earlier this season, will face Jim Campbell in round one. In the third spot is Robert Hight in his Auto Club Chevrolet Camaro. Hight will race Jeff Diehl to start eliminations. Reigning world champion Del Worsham is fourth and Tommy Johnson Jr. is fifth.

Line powered to the quickest time of the year in Pro Stock and earned his fifth No. 1 qualifier of the season with a 6.519 at 212.56 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro. Line, a two-time world champion, will open Sunday’s eliminations with a first-round bye.

“We definitely learned some things today and I think we’ll have a good tune up for tomorrow,” said Line, who has five wins in eight final round appearances so far this year. “I’m not going to trade with anybody else. My car is really good right now.”

In the No. 2 and 3 spots are Line’s Ken Black Racing teammates Greg Anderson and Bo Butner, respectively. Anderson and his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro will face Charlie Westcott in the first round and Butner with his Jim Butner Auto Chevy Camaro will matchup with John Gaydosh.

Three-time Pro Stock Motorcycle champion Krawiec secured his third No. 1 qualifier of the season and 30th of his career with a 6.783 at 195.53 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. Krawiec, the Pro Stock Motorcycle points leader, has won two races this season and appeared in all three Pro Stock Motorcycle finals in 2016. Krawiec will race Brian Pretzel in the first round.

“Our goal coming into today was to learn,” said Krawiec, who leads the points standings. “Hopefully we’ll be able to use that data that we got today to go some rounds tomorrow; one run at a time and have fun doing it.”

Louisiana alligator farmer Jerry Savoie qualified second with a 6.788 at 197.80 on his Savoie’s Alligator Farm Suzuki. Savoie, who lost to Krawiec in the most recent Pro Stock Motorcycle event in Atlanta, will meet Cory Reed in the first round.  In the third spot is Hector Arana Jr. and his Lucas Oil Racing Buell. Arana Jr. will be matched up against Jim Underdahl. Reigning world champion Andrew Hines is in the fourth spot and will open eliminations against Michael Phillips.

Eliminations will begin Sunday at 11 a.m. at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

FRIDAY - CAPPS, TORRENCE, LINE AND KRAWIEC LEAD QUALIFYING FRIDAY AT ENGLISHTOWN

Ron Capps set a track record and raced to the qualifying lead in Funny Car on Friday at the NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Jason Line (Pro Stock), and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders in their respective categories at the 10th event of 24 on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Capps, a two time winner this season, powered his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T to a Raceway Park elapsed time record with a 3.870-second pass at 318.62 mph in the first session of qualifying. Capps will be racing for his third No. 1 qualifier of the season on Saturday.

“The first run was stout for the conditions,” said Capps, who won on Monday in Epping, N.H. “You never know what can happen. I hope it holds up tomorrow. It would be nice to have another green hat.”

Matt Hagan, who posted two consecutive wins earlier this season in Atlanta and Topeka, is in second in his Mopar Express Lane / Rocky Boots Dodge Charger with a 3.901 at a track record speed of 326.71.  Robert Hight is third with a 3.915 at 323.74 and reigning world champion Del Worsham sits in fourth with a 3.931 at 318.17.

Torrence, who won the season opener in Pomona, Calif., and raced to a runner-up finish last weekend in Epping, is in pursuit of his fifth No. 1 qualifier of the season and 10th of his career.

“It feels good,” said Torrence. “The car has been running well all year and to come into Englishtown with some momentum from Epping and the car continuing to do well, it’s a huge boost of confidence for myself and for the guys.”

Two-time and reigning world champion Antron Brown sits in the No. 2 spot after piloting his Matco Tools dragster to a 3.742 pass at 317.94 mph. Brown, a fan favorite as a local from Chesterfield, N.J., won this event last year and is riding momentum from his win last weekend in Epping. “My car is great right now,” said Line. “It feels very good but the other teams are gaining on us, there’s no doubt about it, so we have to step it up.”

Line’s Ken Black Racing teammates, Greg Anderson and Bo Butner, follow him in second and third, respectively. Anderson ran a 6.533 at 212.93 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro and posted the category’s fastest time of the year.

“Anytime you can go low ET the first session coming out it definitely helps build momentum,” said Krawiec. “We made a good clean run.”
