2017 NHRA FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS - CHARLOTTE RESULTS

SUNDAY - TORRENCE, CAPPS, MCGAHA AND TONGLET TAKE HOME WALLY TROPHIES AT FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS

Steve Torrence raced his way to the Top Fuel victory Sunday in the eighth annual NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at Zmax Dragway.

Ron Capps (Funny Car) Chris McGaha (Pro Stock) and LE Tonglet (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also winners in their respective categories at the sixth event on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

Torrence piloted his Capco Contractors dragster to a 3.783-second pass at 323.89 mph for the ninth victory of his career and first of the season. He defeated current points leader, Leah Pritchett, eight-time world champion, Tony Schumacher and Terry McMillen in the final round.

“This is the same as winning a race that you had to pedal it every round or you had to win it on holeshots,” Torrence stated. “This is a driver’s race. We race 24 races a year and one of them we race four-wide. It’s completely different when you come in here; you’re mentally challenged.”

Capps, the current Funny Car world champion, ran a 3.933 at 322.65 in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger for his first NHRA Four-Wide Nationals win of his career, second consecutive this season and 52nd of his Funny Car career. Teammate, Jack Beckman took second place, J.R. Todd finished third, and teammate Matt Hagan placed fourth.

“This is a fun race,” Capps said. “I’ve got a great racecar. To be in a car and to have it throw you back with that many g-force and realizing the temperature that track is and still feeling that six g’s and thinking ‘how on God’s earth are these two Goodyear’s (tires) sticking to that ground?’ It’s an amazing feeling.”

With the victory, Capps takes a 43-point lead over his teammate Hagan.

In Pro Stock, McGaha picked up his fifth career victory and first at zMax Dragway when he ran a 6.591 at 210.44 in his Harlow Sammons Chevy Camaro. He bested Greg Anderson, Shane Gray and Drew Skillman in the final round.

“Now it looks like we’ve got some momentum and it’s kind of hard to swallow,” McGaha said. “To me, I’ve always said you’ve got to have power to win in this game. You’ve got to have enough smoke to win. This one showed us we have a lot of power and that’s why we came here.”

Tonglet rode his Nitro Fish Racing Suzuki to a 6.864 at 195.00 pass to earn his 10th career victory and first of the season. He defeated three-time world champion, Eddie Krawiec and, Andrew Hines on his way to his first four-wides win.

“It’s just unbelievable what we’ve come through this weekend alone,” Tonglet stated. “With the four-wides you just have to be prepared for anything. You just have to concentrate because if you lose your train of thought it’s going to be bad.”

This win also marks the first victory for Tonglet since joining the White Alligator Racing headed by Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion Jerry Savoie.

The 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season continues at Atlanta Dragway May 5-7.

SATURDAY - MILLICAN, C. FORCE AND COUGHLIN JR. ARE NO. 1 QUALIFIERS AT CHARLOTTE

Clay Millican raced to the No. 1 qualifying position in Top Fuel at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway.

Courtney Force (Funny Car), Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) and Jerry Savoie (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the sixth event of 24 on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

Millican, who was the No. 1 qualifier on the circuit’s most recent event in Houston, continued his early season momentum on Friday evening piloting his Parts Plus / Great Clips dragster to a 3.716-second run at 325.77 mph which held up for the No. 1 qualifying position.

“I know every time we show up at the race track we can win,” Millican said. “With this car and this team, every time we go I think we can win the race.  I like my odds tomorrow.  It’s a three-round race and won a lot of three round races; I just haven’t won a fourth. I’m looking forward to it.”

Millican will try to earn his first NHRA career victory when he opens elimination against Terry Haddock, Shawn Langdon, and current Top Fuel points leader, Leah Pritchett.

In Funny Car, Force’s track elapsed time record from Friday evening prevailed Saturday for her third No.1 qualifier of the season. She raced her Advance Auto Parts Chevy Camaro to a 3.851 at 323.27, while teammate Robert Hight took second in his Auto Club Chevy Camaro and her father and team owner, John Force, is third with his PEAK Chevy Camaro.

This is John Force Racing’s first one, two, three qualifying order since Topeka 2014. Courtney Force went on to win that race for JFR.

“I’m really excited we’ve been able to keep that No. 1 spot and really proud of my team,” Force stated. “I think it’s awesome that our Chevy Camaro is flying down the race track. I’m really proud of my guys and for this entire Advance Auto Parts team. It’s a really cool feeling to be in the top spot, but obviously our goal tomorrow is going rounds and picking up those points.”

Courtney Force will face Jonnie Lindberg, J.R. Todd and Bob Tasca III at the line. Hight will square up against Jim Campbell, Tommy Johnson Jr. and Jack Beckman.

In Pro Stock, Coughlin Jr. has back-to-back No. 1 qualifying positions this season with a run of 6.578 at 210.24 in his JEGS.com / Elite Performance Chevy Camaro. He will line up against John Gaydosh, Drew Skillman and Vincent Nobile.

“The goal today was obviously to try and remain No. 1 in the field and then also finish No.1 in both of the sessions,” Coughlin Jr. stated. “I think this puts us in good position for tomorrow for running this four-wide.”

Two-time world champion Erica Enders qualified second in her Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro with a 6.583 run at 210.08 and will open eliminations against Shane Tucker, rookie Tanner Gray and Alex Laughlin.

Defending Pro Stock Motorcycle world champion Savoie earned his 10th No. 1 qualifier of his career with a run 6.824 at 196.24 on his White Alligator Racing Suzuki from Friday’s qualifying session. He will race against Steve Johnson, LE Tonglet and Scotty Pollacheck in the first round of eliminations.

“I’m pretty confident,” Savoie said. “Tim has a good handle on this thing; this bike is a machine. It is predictable. You make a change; it responds. That is what you want in a racing bike. It’s when you start to take fuel and add fuel it doesn’t respond."

Eddie Kraweic qualified second in his Screamin’ Eagle Vane & Hines Harley-Davidson with a 6.835 run at 196.93 and will open eliminations against Shawn Gann, Hector Arana Jr. and Matt Smith.

First round of eliminations will begin at 12 p.m. on Sunday at the eighth annual NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway.

FRIDAY - C. FORCE, MILLICAN AND COUGHLIN JR. LEAD QUALIFYING AT FOUR-WIDE NATIONALS

Courtney Force raced to the Funny Car qualifying lead Friday evening at the eighth annual NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMax Dragway.

Clay Millican (Top Fuel) Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) and Jerry Savoie (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also provisional qualifying leaders at the sixth of 24 events on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

Force raced a track-elapsed time record of 3.851-seconds at 323.27 mph in her Advance Auto Parts Chevy Camaro in the second qualifying session.  Her teammate, Robert Hight, qualified second at 3.873 at 333.91 in his Auto Club Chevy Camaro, and her father and team owner, John Force, ran a 3.889 at 323.43 to qualify third in his PEAK Chevy Camaro.

“Excited to be one, two and three coming out here,” Force stated. “This is also a pretty important track for us. It’s so crazy from a driver’s standpoint but it’s so much fun and puts such a challenge on everyone that I think this track makes everyone a better driver. A lot of people make mistakes here and I think a lot of people really have to be on their A-game when you come to a track like this.”

Funny Car points leader, Matt Hagan, is fourth with a 3.898 at 331.28 pass in his Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger R/T.

Millican leads Top Fuel qualifying with his run of 3.716 at 325.77 in his Parts Plus / Great Clips dragster which occurred during the second session.  He was the No. 1 qualifier in Houston where he was defeated by Steve Torrence in the semi-finals.

“It’s just crazy that we’re at the front of the field these last couple of weeks,” Millican stated. “The car is just running well and it’s not hurting itself which is very important to be able to have those consistent runs.”

Doug Kalitta and the Mac Tools dragster are second with his pass of 3.718 at 325.77 and three-time world champion Antron Brown is third with a 3.720 at 328.06 run in his Matco Tools dragster. Torrence and the Capco Contractors dragster sit in fourth.

Coughlin Jr. holds the Pro Stock top spot after running a 6.578 at 210.24 in his JEGS.com/Elite Performance Chevrolet Camaro. Coughlin, a five-time Pro Stock world champion, was the No. 1 qualifier at the most recent event in Houston as well as racing to a runner-up finish and is buoyed by the current success.

“We had touches of brilliance here and there and tested between Vegas and Houston,” Coughlin said. “We showed up in Houston and qualified on the pole. We tried to not look back but was nipped in the final by Bo Butner. Heck of an effort, we had a great day for the yellow and black and look forward to hitting the track tomorrow.”

Two-time world champ Erica Enders is in second with a 6.583 at 210.08 run and veteran Greg Anderson ran a 6.587 at 209.79 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro for third.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, current world champion Savoie sits in the No. 1 qualifier position with a 6.824 pass at 196.24 on his White Alligator Racing Suzuki. He was the No. 1 qualifier at Gainesville earlier this season.

“We take it race by race and focus on our program,” Savoie stated. “One thing you’ll learn about my crew chief is that he doesn’t think about tomorrow. He doesn’t think about round two when he’s in round one. Whatever the conditions are at that time is when he makes the adjustments.”

Eddie Krawiec, a three-time world champion, sits in second position with a 6.835 pass at 196.93 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson and Chip Ellis on his Junior Pippin Trucking Company Buell is in third.
