SUNDAY - B. FORCE & ENDERS GRAB WINS 150 & 151 FOR FEMALES, HAGAN & M. SMITH ALSO GET VICTORIES AT LAS VEGAS

A record-setting weekend for Brittany Force ended with a victory, as she won in Top Fuel on Sunday during the 19th annual Dodge NHRA Nationals Presented by Pennzoil at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It also served as the 151st overall win for females in NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series racing history, coming just moments after Pro Stock’s Erica Enders claimed the 150th female victory on Sunday.

Brittany Force

Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Enders (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) all also won in their respective categories at the fifth of six races in the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs. The race also serves as the penultimate event of the 24-race 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Force, who set the national speed record in the class on Friday with an impressive run of 338.17 mph, broke the track E.T. record in the final round on Sunday, going 3.652-seconds at 334.73 in her Advance Auto Parts dragster to hold off points leader Steve Torrence during an epic final round duel in the 900th Top Fuel race in NHRA history.

Torrence went 3.719 at 330.63, but couldn’t track down Force, who moved within 16 points of Torrence heading into the final race of the season. It gave Force, who beat Pat Dakin, Austin Prock and Billy Torrence earlier in the day, a much-needed second win this season and 10th in her career, setting up a must-see finale in Pomona.

Matt Hagan

“This weekend has been incredible for this team,” said Force, who earned her first Vegas victory. “I’ve always wanted to win here. We set the MPH record here and we’ve accomplished a lot, but what we’re really going after is a championship together. I felt good coming in and we got the job done. It was pretty cool to (win) 151 and 150 with Erica today. David Grubnic has been awesome to work with and I’m very blessed to have him as my crew chief. I want to go straight to Pomona and I’m going to do everything I can to stay in this thing. I’ll be ready when Pomona gets here. We’ve been there before and we want to do it again with this Advance Auto Parts team.”

Torrence reached his 14th final round in 2019 and 55th in his career thanks to round wins against Scott Palmer, Mike Salinas and Doug Kalitta. Torrence will try to hold off Force – a matchup of the last two world champs – in Pomona and claim his second straight world title.

Hagan suddenly finds himself back in the championship mix in Funny Car after picking up his second straight victory, going 3.876 at 331.36 in the final round in his MOPAR Dodge SRT Hellcat Widebody. It ousted Jonnie Lindberg’s 3.945 at 321.12, putting Hagan third in points and 56 behind leader Robert Hight. Hagan beat Paul Lee, Tommy Johnson Jr. and Bob Tasca III to reach the final round, leading Lindberg from start to finish to win for the fourth time in 2019 and 33rd in his career.

“I’m telling you what, I’m excited and fired up right now,” Hagan said. “When you have that opportunity to come into the Pomona still in the championship hunt, that is why we do this. That’s what gets me fired up and motivated, and I’m just so proud of my guys. They’re killing it and they all just rise to occasion. I feed off that and coming into Pomona, I wish it were tomorrow. To come out and turn four win lights on at a Dodge-sponsored race, that’s a fairy tale. It’s hard to win back-to-back races, and it just shows you what we’re capable of. We’re going into Pomona and we’re going to work as hard as we can.”

Erica Enders

Lindberg nearly picked up his first career Funny Car win, reaching his fourth career final thanks to wins against defending world champ J.R. Todd, Cruz Pedregon and Jack Beckman, who remains second in points, 46 behind Hight heading to the final race of the season.

Points leader Enders came up big in Vegas again thanks to her 6.617 at 208.04 in the Pro Stock final round in her Melling Performance/Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro against teammate Jeg Coughlin Jr. The win, which is Enders’ second this season, included all kinds of milestones, including the 25th in her career, the 150th for females and the 200th win for Camaro in Pro Stock. It also extended her points lead to 92 points over Coughlin, as Enders eyes her third world title. Her first two world championships also included wins at the fall race in Vegas.

“My guys just keep on giving me a really good racecar,” Enders said. “It’s been a great day and to get the 150th, I’m just really proud to be part of the group of such smart, strong, talented females out there. It was definitely taxing (today) and to have an all-Elite final, that was just the icing on the cake. It was huge to win today and we were able to rise to the occasion. We’re going to go out to Pomona to win the race. Anything can happen and I’ve been part of that. Winning in St. Louis and then Las Vegas, it’s not a big enough cushion for me. I’m excited about the opportunity.”

Coughlin went 6.620 at 201.70 in the final round, but couldn’t track down Enders in his 110th finals appearance. He beat Fernando Cuadra, Aaron Stanfield and Jason Line earlier in the day.

Matt Smith

Defending Pro Stock Motorcycle world champ Matt Smith picked up his first playoff victory of 2019 thanks to his 6.855 at 195.90 in the final round on his Denso Auto Parts/Stockseth/MSR EBR. He outlasted Steve Johnson’s 6.863 at 194.04, picking up his second win this year and 24th in his career. He knocked off Katie Sullivan, Angie Smith and Andrew Hines to reach the final round. Smith, who won for the second time in Vegas, is fourth in points and trails Hines by 117 points.

“I can’t say enough about my guys and this team,” Smith said. “We took it into our own hands (against Andrew) and it’s not totally and mathematically over yet. I told everybody we were going to shoot for the moon in the finals, and it stuck. When it stuck, there’s nobody going to catch us when it runs like that. We just pulled it off in the final and did our job.”

Trying to play playoff spoiler, Johnson reached his second final round this year by beating Ron Tornow, Angelle Sampey and Scotty Pollacheck. Hines leads Jerry Savoie by 115 as he closes in on his sixth world title.

The Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues Nov. 14-17 with the final race in the 2019 season and the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs, the Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

SATURDAY - BECKMAN, PRITCHETT, ANDERSON & M. SMITH EARN NO. 1 QUALIFIERS AS TRACK RECORDS FALL AT DODGE NHRA NATIONALS

A day after setting the track speed record, Funny Car championship hopeful Jack Beckman made the quickest run in The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway history on Saturday, earning the No. 1 qualifying spot at the 19th annual Dodge NHRA Nationals Presented by Pennzoil.

Leah Pritchett (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the fifth of six races in the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs. The race also serves as the penultimate event of the 24-race 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Beckman powered to a record-breaking run of 3.835-seconds at 331.94 mph during Saturday’s final qualifying session, sending him to the top spot for the third time in 2019 and 27th overall in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge SRT Hellcat. Beckman will meet Terry Haddock to open raceday on Sunday. After going a Vegas-best 335.90 on Friday, Beckman and his team saved their best for last on Saturday, giving Beckman, who is second in points, valuable bonus points as he tries to track down leader Robert Hight.

“I just want the trophy now. That will make it a perfect weekend,” said Beckman, who had previously held both ends of the track record at Vegas coming into the weekend. “It just gives us a lot more confidence. The car is doing what it’s supposed to be doing. We’re not looking over our shoulder because there’s a lot of hungry competitors; we’re looking at Robert Hight. All we can control is our own destiny and you can’t look past anybody."

Tommy Johnson Jr. qualified second with a 3.840 at 331.04, while John Force, who is third in points and qualified third, went 3.853 at 330.72. Points leader Hight qualified eighth with a 3.876 at 332.84.

Pritchett came alive in the final Top Fuel qualifying session on Saturday, making the quickest run in track history with a remarkable 3.654 at 329.83 in her MOPAR dragster. By setting the track record, Pritchett eclipsed Brittany Force’s top run on Friday, qualifying No. 1 for the first time this season and 12th time overall, also giving Don Schumacher Racing a clean sweep in nitro qualifying. She will meet Cameron Ferre in the first round of eliminations.

“It was a phenomenal pass and we made three consistent runs out of the four,” Pritchett said. “When I hit 330-feet, I knew we were going to be on a run, and to be No. 1 at the Dodge Nationals Presented by Pennzoil is phenomenal. We’ve got all the energy, it’s our first No. 1 of the season and we just hope to continue to carry this momentum. We’re just trying to stay in our zone and keep our intensity, and I’m not overthinking in the car. That’s what I’m planning to do tomorrow.”

Force was bumped to the second position with her 3.659 at a national record speed of 338.17, while Billy Torrence is third with a 3.662 at 332.34. Points leader Steve Torrence qualified fifth with a 3.691 at 329.26.

Fresh off a win at the most recent race in Dallas, Anderson stayed strong on Saturday in Vegas, securing the No. 1 spot for the second time this season with a run of 6.584 at 207.91 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro. It is also the 104th No. 1 qualifier for Anderson, who will meet Cristian Cuadra to open raceday. The four-time world champ remains in striking distance of points leader Erica Enders, who qualified No. 1 on Friday before finishing second with her 6.587 at 208.46. Bo Butner finished in the third spot after going 6.591 at 208.68.

“It’s always been a great racetrack for me,” said Anderson, who has a class-best eight wins in Vegas. “I love coming here and racing in front of (team owner Ken Black) and his family. It’s a special weekend so far and we’ve had a lot of magic here. It makes you feel good and gives you confidence, and we’ll take it. It just takes so much to win a race in Pro Stock anymore. You couldn’t possibly bet on who’s the favorite. It just comes down to who makes zero mistakes and who puts it all together tomorrow. We’re executing perfectly so far and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

Defending Pro Stock Motorcycle world champ Smith was even better Saturday, lowering the track record he set the previous day to a 6.840 at 196.93 on his Denso Auto Parts/Stockseth/MSR EBR. Smith grabbed the No. 1 spot for the sixth time this season 37th time in his career, and he will face Katie Sullivan in the first round of eliminations as the veteran seeks his first playoff win of 2019.

“We’ve got a lot of confidence going into tomorrow,” said Smith, who also qualified No. 1 at the Vegas spring race. “All in all, I’ve think we’ve got a pretty fast hotrod for tomorrow. This motorcycle is running pretty mean right now. After the helmet goes on, it’s all serious and it’s all business, and we’re having a good time.”

Steve Johnson stayed second with a 6.848 at 194.18, while Eddie Krawiec qualified third thanks to his 6.864 at 195.11. Points leader Andrew Hines is right behind in fourth after going 6.866 at 194.63 on Saturday.

Stevie “Fast” Jackson, who has already clinched his first world championship, qualified in the top spot during action in the E3 Spark Plugs NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series presented by J&A Service. Jackson’s pass of 5.735 at 250.37 in his blown Bahrain1 Racing Camaro gave him the fourth No. 1 qualifier of his 2019 championship season.

Eliminations begin at 11 a.m. PT on Sunday at the Dodge NHRA Nationals Presented by Pennzoil.

B. FORCE, TODD, ENDERS & M. SMITH PUT ON SHOW, PICK UP PROVISIONAL NO. 1 SPOTS AT DODGE NHRA NATIONALS

Brittany Force made the fastest run in NHRA Top Fuel history on Friday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, blazing to the provisional No. 1 spot during qualifying at the 19th Dodge NHRA Nationals Presented by Pennzoil.

J.R. Todd (Funny Car), Erica Enders (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also provisional No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the fifth of six races in the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoffs. The race also serves as the penultimate event of the 24-race 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Force’s run of 3.659-seconds in her Advance Auto Parts dragster set the track E.T. record in Las Vegas, while the speed of 338.17 mph gave the former world champ the fastest run in Top Fuel history. It also gives Force both ends of the national record after she made the quickest run in history earlier this year. If it holds, Force would earn her ninth No. 1 qualifier of 2019 and 19th overall. She is also in line for her third top qualifier in the playoffs and fifth in the last seven races.

“A 3.65 is pretty outstanding here in Vegas and this is one of my favorite tracks on the circuit,” said Force, who is third in points. “I would love to win here and we’re off to a great start. We’ll take those bonus points and now we have the speed record, which is pretty awesome. I knew on the other end that was freaking fast and I knew it was a killer run. We need to get that win if we want to go after a championship. We’re in a good position right now, but we have to win this thing.”

Billy Torrence, who won the most recent race to jump into the championship conversation, grabbed the second spot with a 3.662 at 332.34, and Leah Pritchett is third after going 3.681 at 328.38. Points leader Steve Torrence currently sits 10th with a 3.765 at 320.05.

Todd, the defending Funny Car world champ, continued to perform well in Las Vegas, grabbing the No. 1 spot on Friday with a blistering pass of 3.856 at 333.58 in his DHL Toyota Camry. Todd, who won in Vegas a year ago en route to his first career world title, is eyeing his third top qualifier this season and 13th in his career. Tommy Johnson Jr. is right behind in second after an impressive run of 3.858 at 327.35, and Bob Tasca III, who went to the final round at the most recent event, is third with a 3.862 at 332.02.

Points leader Robert Hight is currently sixth with a 3.876 at 332.84, while the two drivers closest to him in the points standings, Jack Beckman and John Force, qualified fifth and fourth, respectively.

Pro Stock points leader Enders continued to dominate qualifying in the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship, moving into the top spot with a run of 6.587 at 208.46 in her Melling Performance/Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro. If it holds, it would be Enders’ fourth No. 1 qualifier in five playoff races and 23rd overall. Seeking her third world title, Enders’ two previous title seasons included wins at the fall Vegas race. Bo Butner is second after his run of 6.591 at 208.68, while Greg Anderson, who won the most recent event, went 6.598 at 207.62 to sit third.

Defending Pro Stock Motorcycle world champ Smith set both ends of the track record on his Denso Auto Parts/Stockseth/MSR EBR with a 6.842 at 198.64. Smith, who is looking for his first playoff win in 2019, is in line for his sixth No. 1 this season and 37th in his career. Steve Johnson is second after his 6.872 of 193.93 and Angelle Sampey is a spot behind thanks to her 6.877 at 193.90. Points leader Andrew Hines qualified seventh on Friday with a run of 6.907 at 194.86.
