SUNDAY - ASHLEY, HIGHT AND ENDERS GRAB WINS AT LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

Top Fuel rising star Justin Ashley started the 2022 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series with an impressive victory, powering to the win on Sunday at the 62nd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Erica Enders (Pro Stock) also picked up wins at the first of 22 races during the 2022 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season.

In a thrilling final round matchup featuring Ashley, the 2020 NHRA Rookie of the Year, and Austin Prock, the 2019 Rookie of the Year, Ashley came out on top with a run of 3.694-seconds at 314.53 mph in his 11,000-horsepower Phillips Connect dragster to slip past Prock’s 3.713 at 333.00. It gave Ashley his third career victory and first in Pomona. He knocked off Jim Maroney, Antron Brown and four-time defending world champ Steve Torrence to reach the final round and a year after advancing to the final round of the Winternationals, Ashley impressed in finishing the job on Sunday.

“We knew coming into the day the Top Fuel field was going to be tough,” Ashley said. “You saw today races separated by such little margins. We really had no layups at all and you’re never really going to have any layups. To be able to beat guys like Antron Brown, Steve Torrence, the four-time champ, and Austin Prock, who’s doing a great job, it really solidified what we came out here and wanted to do. We spent the off-season trying to work on power, pick up and get to where we wanted to and I feel like today you could really see that.”

Prock, making his return to full-time race this year, made a strong opening statement, too, advancing to the final round with wins against Clay Millican, Tony Schumacher, who is also returning to full-time racing in 2022, and John Force Racing teammate and No. 1 qualifier Brittany Force.

In a tremendous side-by-side matchup of longtime stars, Hight slipped past Ron Capps in the Funny Car final round, going 3.861 at 329.58 in his 11,000-horsepower Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS to beat Capps’ 3.882 at 333.82. It gave Hight his fifth win at the Winternationals and 54th in his career, setting the tone for a strong 2022 season after finishing a disappointing eighth in the class last season. He advanced to the finals with round wins against Jason Rupert, Tony Jurado and Matt Hagan, going 3.861 in both the semifinals and finals as the three-time world champ put a spectacular opening stamp on the 2022 campaign.

“There are a lot of really great Funny Cars that are doing the same thing and we just happened to get the win today. It’s going to be a battle,” Hight said. “Look at our qualifying run last night. Capps and I were separated by .004 of a second for No. 1 and No. 2. So you know going in the final it’s going to be a battle and it’s going to be a great run and it was .002 at the stripe. It doesn’t get any closer than that. That’s unbelievable Funny Car racing. If someone would have told me you’d see Funny Car racing like that, I’d tell them they’re crazy.

“You have to do your job and everybody on the Auto Club team did their job this weekend. We definitely have more consistency than we had last year. I’m excited about that and with (crew chiefs) Jimmy Prock and Chris Cunningham they’ll just build on that and I can only see it getting better."

Capps, the reigning world champ and No. 1 qualifier, knocked off John Force, J.R. Todd and Cruz Pedregon to advance to the final round for the 132nd time in his standout career.

In the 900th race in Pro Stock history, Enders earned her 34th career win, going 6.559 at 210.31 in the final round in her Melling Performance/Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro to knock off teammate Aaron Stanfield. It marked another historic victory for the four-time world champ, who earned a special trophy along with the Wally in honor of the 900th win. Enders knocked off Cristian Cuadra, reigning NHRA Rookie of the Year Dallas Glenn and longtime rival Greg Anderson, the defending world champ, to reach the final round with a trio of strong reaction times. Enders rolled to the win in the championship round, also claiming her first Winternationals victory on a memorable day in Pomona.

“Race day was awesome. It was really challenging, not a walk-through by any means, (and) some interesting stuff happened out there today,” Enders said. “(But) we were able to park the Melling Performance hot rod in the winner’s circle and we’ve never won here at the Winternationals. To be able to secure that 900th Pro Stock victory with that special shift trophy is pretty awesome.

“We’ve accomplished way more than I ever thought in Pro Stock. We’ve stuck it out and showed a lot of tenacity. This win is very significant. You treat every raceday the same, but this win at the 900th Pro Stock race means a lot to me.”

Stanfield, the defending event winner, advanced to his seventh career final round thanks to round wins against teammate Troy Coughlin Jr., Rodger Brogdon and Fernando Cuadra Jr.

The NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series returns to action Feb. 25-27 with the NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Phoenix.

SATURDAY - B. FORCE, CAPPS AND ENDERS QUALIFY NO. 1 AT POMONA

Following a dominant performance in qualifying throughout 2021, Brittany Force added another to start her 2022 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season, rolling to the No. 1 spot in Top Fuel on Saturday at the 62nd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Ron Capps (Funny Car) and Erica Enders (Pro Stock) also qualified No. 1 at the first of 22 races during the 2022 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season.

Force powered to the top with a run of 3.661-seconds at 333.91 mph in the final qualifying session, giving her 33 career No. 1 qualifiers in her 11,000-horsepower Monster Energy dragster. She drove to 12 No. 1 positions a year ago and is now seeking her first career Winternationals victory as she looks to begin the 2022 campaign on an impressive note. Force will take on Ron August in the first round of eliminations on Sunday.

“It feels awesome to be back out here at my home track and starting a new season,” Force said. “I’m glad to be back, doing what we love and it’s even better to go No. 1 at the first race of the season. It pumps all of us up. We’re excited to get going and see what we can do this season. It felt good to have a solid pass going into race day. A 3.66, that’s pretty outstanding.”

Justin Ashley, who was the provisional No. 1 qualifier on Friday, took second with a run of 3.676 at 331.45 and Mike Salinas was right behind thanks to his 3.677 at 329.02 from Friday. Austin Prock jumped to fourth on Saturday with his pass of 3.711 at 331.85.

Capps, the reigning Funny Car world champ, closed out qualifying with an outstanding performance, slipping past Robert Hight with his run of 3.857 at 332.43 in his 11,000-horsepower NAPA Auto Parts Funny Car. After moving into a team ownership role for the first time and forming Ron Capps Motorsports in the off-season, it was also an ideal start for the veteran. In a thrilling, must-see first-round matchup to open eliminations, Capps will take on longtime rival and 16-time world champ John Force.

“We went up there to run an .83. That’s what Guido (crew chief, Dean Antonelli) put in it,” Capps said. “It started cooling off, so we came back and made some changes. That thing was a rocket ship. I could hear (Robert) Hight over there but I couldn’t see him, but I knew he was right there. That means if you’re running with (tuner) Jimmy Prock, you’re running pretty good. This No. 1 qualifier hat right here, means a lot. To start off as a team owner and have all the people who have helped throughout the off-season, it’s huge.”

Hight took the second spot with his pass of 3.861 at 331.36, while Matt Hagan is third with a 3.886 at 329.34.

Looking for her first career Winternationals victory in her storied career, Enders moved a step closer by starting her 2022 with a No. 1 qualifier thanks to her run of 6.521 at 210.44 in her Melling Performance/Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro. It gives Enders, a four-time world champ, her 24th career No. 1 qualifier. She will open eliminations against Cristian Cuadra and the standout is focused on picking up her first win in the event in what is Pro Stock’s 900th career race. Sunday’s winner will also receive a special trophy along with the Wally to commemorate the 900th event in class history.

“I feel like this is the best race car we’ve had in a long time,” Enders said. “We had a goal in the off-season to come out swinging. I feel like we have something to prove and the guys went to work hard in the engine shop. To lay down three consistent runs like that during the three qualifying sessions gives you confidence heading into race day. Tomorrow is very exciting and I just try to focus on keeping it as a normal race. I just go up and try to control every aspect in my lane with my race car. We’ve been fortunate enough to battle it out for a lot of really cool awards and this 900th event for Pro Stock, it would definitely mean a lot to take that bad boy home.”

Defending event winner Aaron Stanfield qualified second thanks to his run of 6.527 at 210.37 and Kyle Koretsky qualified third thanks to his Friday run of 6.528 at 209.20. Greg Anderson, the defending world champ, qualified fourth and will be seeking his 100th career victory on Sunday.

FRIDAY - HIGHT, ASHLEY, ENDERS LEAD THE WAY TO OPEN QUALIFYING AT LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS AT POMONA

After a disappointing 2021, Funny Car standout Robert Hight got off to a strong start to open the 2022 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season, rocketing to the provisional No. 1 spot on Friday at the 62nd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Justin Ashley (Top Fuel) and Erica Enders (Pro Stock) are also the provisional No. 1 qualifiers at the first of 22 races during the 2022 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season.

Hight, a three-time world champion, powered to an impressive run of 3.882-seconds at 330.89 mph in his 11,000-horsepower Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS to take the top spot in Funny Car. If it holds, it would give Hight, who struggled to an eighth-place finish last year, his 72nd career No. 1 qualifier and an ideal way to what he hopes is a rebound season.

“My team really worked over the winter to look at what we did in 2021 and how that went so badly,” Hight said. “We had no consistency. We could throw down a few times and won a couple races, but there was no consistency. Basically, we went back to our whole clutch set up we had in 2019, when we kind of just ran away with the (title) and so far, so good. It’s a good job by the team and things are good at JFR right now with the four cars, and we’re looking forward to the whole season.”

Now racing for the new Tony Stewart Racing team, Matt Hagan raced to the second spot with a run of 3.886 at 329.34. Hagan is a three-time Winternationals winner and will look to add to that this weekend, while reigning world champ Ron Capps is third after his run of 3.903 at 328.30. Capps, who is the defending event winner, is also in new territory after forming his own team in the off-season.

Ashley paced the field in Top Fuel with an impressive run of 3.676 at 331.45 in his 11,000-horsepower Phillips Connect dragster. Ashley, who advanced to the final round of the Winternationals a year ago, is seeking his first career No. 1 qualifier and the young standout closed in on that achievement with a standout run on Friday. After a strong close to his 2021 season, it was precisely the start Ashley, the 2020 NHRA Rookie of the Year, was looking for to begin 2022.

"The run felt great and it’s exciting to get back in the race car,” Ashley said. “When you’re able to go down there and go right to the top and run as good as we did, it’s exactly what we were looking for. It’s a great way to kick off the weekend. I think this is the best Top Fuel field in a decade. So to be able to qualify No. 1 would be amazing. We still have tomorrow to go and we’ve got a lot of really good cars behind us that are going to try and improve, but our Phillips Connect team is going to try to do the exact same thing and even improve upon today.”

Mike Salinas is currently second after running 3.677 at 329.02, while Brittany Force, who had 12 No. 1 qualifiers a year ago, is third with a 3.722 at 332.10. Four-time defending world champ Steve Torrence sits in the fourth spot.

Four-time Pro Stock world champ Enders started her 2022 season off in impressive style, jumping to the No. 1 spot in Pomona with a stellar run of 6.521 at 210.44 in her Melling Performance/Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro. With hopes of competing for a fifth world championship, Enders will look to open the year with her 24th career No. 1 qualifier in what is Pro Stock’s 900th career race.

“We were definitely excited, considering how the year ended last year,” said Enders, who is seeking her first Winternationals win. “We knew we had to go to work and had to find some power in the engine department and getting our Rick Jones Race Cars tuned up. My guys went to work really hard. It takes an arm of people to get this stuff right.

“The KB Racing guys had big, big power last year. Greg (Anderson) was on the pole the majority of the races then it still came down to the wire on winning the championship. Our goal was to come out swinging. I feel like we have something to prove and we’re not backing down.”

Aaron Stanfield, who is the defending winner of the event, is currently second after going 6.527 at 210.37 and Kyle Koretsky is a spot behind with his run of 6.528 at 209.20. Defending world champ Greg Anderson, who is also seeking his 100th career victory, sits fourth.

Qualifying continues at 12 p.m. PT on Saturday at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

THURSDAY - STARK'S GHIA, COE'S FAIRLANE HEADLINE NHRA WINTERNATIONALS TOP QUALIFIERS

In another day and age, David Stark's 1959 Karman Ghia would have been an L/Gasser racing within Modified Eliminator.

Twenty-one years later, Stark's Super Stock/VX VW thundered to the top spot with a -1.043 under the index with a 10.407 elapsed time.

Following in line was Gary Coe and his Oregon-based FSS/B Mustang with a -.985, 8.215, Mike Johnston (FSS/G, -.967, 9.283), Justin Lamb (FSS/B, -.966, 8.234  9.20), and Tim Seymour (FSS/D, -.960, 8.940).

Robert Pond's AA/SA '64 Fairlane set the pace for the Stockers as he pushed his classic Ford to a 9.653 elapsed time, -1.047 under the index.  Rounding out the top five were Buddy Jensen, (G/SA, 10.956, -1.044), Richie Pauley (C/SA, 10.357, -1.043), Larry Peterson (K/SA, 11.608, -1.042) and Cody Lang (H/SA, 11.128, -1.022).

Brad Brewer's B/Altered Cobalt was the quickest in Competition Eliminator with a 6.851 elapsed time, -0.809 under the index.

Pro Gas pioneer Don Meziere was the top runner in Top Sportsman with a 6.696 elapsed time, while 's 6.104, 224.36 set the pace in Top Dragster.

Thursday's action got off to an inauspicious start as Top Sportsman racer Doug Bracey went into the sand during the Q-1 session, reportedly damaging both catch nets. Racing came to a stop for nearly two hours as the Safety Safari worked to repair the damage.

Once the qualifying resumed, a Super Stock oildown put a crimp in the schedule with another hour of downtime.
