THE COMPLETION IN RADFORD

PX_winner-martin.jpg
Joshua Hernandez and ADRL presenting sponsor the National Guard have also enjoyed a very rewarding union since joining forces at the start of this year. Hernandez earned his third-straight national-event win at Radford, Virginia, a feat never before accomplished in the ADRL.

Shortly after fireworks lit up the south-Virginia sky, Joshua Hernandez lit up the crowd at Motor Mile Dragway this July 4th by winning an unprecedented third consecutive American Drag Racing League (ADRL) Pro Extreme event, in the rain-postponed “arm-drop drags” final from the series’ previous race in Martin, Michigan.

Joining Hernandez in victory lane at Motor Mile Dragway in Radford, Virginia were Billy Harper in Pro Nitrous and Extreme 10.5 winner Gary White. The postponed Pro Extreme Motorcycle final was held over again to the ADRL’s next event, July 25-26, at Budd’s Creek, Maryland because finalist Scott Gray asked for the delay to accommodate his opponent, T.T. Jones, who couldn’t make the race due to illness.

PNArmDropfinal.jpg
ADRL President Kenny Nowling (left) balanced on a board and gave arm-drop signals to start the Pro Nitrous final just as he did after lightning damaged the starting-line tree at the series’ previous race in Martin, Michigan. Teammates Billy Harper (near lane) and Dennis Radford faced off with Harper getting the win after both suffered traction trouble.
“I know everybody says this, but this win belongs to my team. They work so hard getting the car ready and hauling it all over the country and then they just give me a perfect ride,” Hernandez said of his ’57 Chevy after going 3.89 seconds at 192.55 miles per hour over the eighth-mile course to defeat Bob Mandell Jr. “I was definitely worried after we didn’t get down the track in our test pass, but they made some changes and there was no problem at all.”

Harper defeated teammate Dennis Radford to pick up his second-straight ADRL Pro Nitrous win, but it was an anticlimactic affair as both drivers lost traction early and coasted to the finish line.

“It shook hard going into second gear and I had to get off it,” Harper explained after posting a 5.98-seconds win at just 83 mph with his 2000 Viper. Radford said the transmission broke in his ’70 Cuda after it also lost traction early.

XTF_winner.jpg
Extreme 10.5 driver Gary White steered the Team Titan Scion to a competition bye win in the postponed Martin final after opponent Brent Rau was a no-show in Radford, Virginia.
“It’s okay, we knew the trophy was going home with the team,” Radford said. “We want to win one again tomorrow, though, that’s what we’re focused on now.”

In Extreme 10.5, which refers to the cars’ relatively narrow 10.5-inch-wide rear slicks, Gary White made a solo pass in his 2006 Scion after fellow Martin finalist Brent Rau didn’t make the long tow down from Minnesota. White’s car also lost grip shortly after launching and smoked it’s rear tires to half-track on a 5.12 at 152.65-mph pass.

“Basically the track was just too good tonight and we just read it wrong,” White admitted. “That’s okay, though, because we learned something and hopefully we can use that to do better tomorrow.

The ADRL returns to action tomorrow with two more scheduled qualifying sessions before eliminations rounds begin at 4 p.m. for the 2nd annual Shelor Motor Mile Independence Drags.

EVENT POSTPONED

The racing for the weekend has officially been postponed. As you can tell from the pictures below, heavy storms have moved in for the afternoon. The final rounds in all classes will be completed at the next event at Tulsa Raceway Park.

COMPETITION STOPPED AGAIN

 DSA_6358.jpg

The ADRL has had a rough go of things this weekend. Sunday, which was intended to be a finish up kind of day has proven to

DSA_6366.jpg

be anything but a quick and easy completion.

Saturday's lightning storm knocked out the Christmas tree forcing the ADRL to adopt an old version of flag-starting. The money and points were equally split since competition had been eliminated down to the quarter-finals.

In the midst of starting the makeshift eliminations, a freak starting line incident sent Mitchell Scruggs, father of Pro Extreme racer Jason Scruggs to the hospital.  Scruggs was standing in the area behind the burnout box, when debris was pitched from an Extreme 10.5 competitor's burnout and impacted Mitchell in the chest. He was listed in stable condition.

Eliminations were put on hold until the ambulance returned from transport to the local hospital.

The final rounds had been established and teams were called to the lanes when another whopper of a thunderstorm rolled through Martin, Michigan delivering a nasty combination of rain and lightning.

Currently the event is on hold.

Update: Mitchell Scruggs returned to the track in fine condition just in time to see the storm hit. The primary concern for Scruggs was difficutly in breathing but once he recovered from having the wind knocked out of him, he was ready to return to the track.

ADRL GOES OLD SCHOOL FOR SUNDAY'S COMPLETION

Kenny1.jpg
Surrounded by ADRL racers, series president Kenny Nowling demonstrates some of the hand signals he'll be using to stage and signal the start of each pair of elimination-round competitors at the 4th annual ADRL Pizza Hut Sumer Drags in Martin, MI. (ADRL Communications photo)

In an unprecedented move for major-league drag racing, the Flowmaster American Drag Racing League presented by the National Guard is returning to the sport's roots with hand-signal starts at its 4th annual Pizza Hut Summer Drags at Knoll Gas Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan.

A severe electrical storm blew through western Michigan last night, forcing tens of thousands of fans home early and elimination rounds for the ADRL's all-pro show to be postponed to today. However, lightning apparently damaged the track's starting tree, though its timing system over the eighth-mile course remained intact, so ADRL President Kenny Nowling made the bold decision to hand start the remaining pairings. They're racing for bragging rights only, though, as the race purse and points will be split equally among those remaining in each class.

"It's old school, baby!" Nowling declared after delivering the news, which was fairly well-received by racers who didn't relish the thought of making long treks home without determining winners. "This is certainly not the best situation, but it's the best solution. We have fans who have returned today to watch a race and that's exactly what we're going to give them. I truly appreciate the cooperation of our race teams in making this happen and I'm looking forward to finally crowning champions at the Pizza Hut Summer Drags."

The ADRL is next in action June 20-21, at Tulsa Raceway Park in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Pro Mod racer Ray Commisso emerged uninjured from an accident during the second Pro Extreme qualifying session at the ADRL Summer Drags at Knoll Gas Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan.

Commisso shook the tires early in the run and the force of the shake turned him towards the retaining wall. The car made a complete turn and he backed into the wall. His car came to a stop at the quarter-mile mark.

He walked away from the crash and his vitals are good. Commisso only had a sore elbow.

CompetitionPlus.com’s longtime Director of Photography Roger Richards shot this sequence.

FRIDAY QUALIFYING - STANTON, HARPER, WILSON AND PROPHIT LEAD ADRL QUALIFYING

Stanton1.jpg
Former world champion Bubba Stanton paced the quick Pro Extreme division with a career-best 3.80 elapsed time.
Bubba Stanton of Potts Camp, Mississippi ran a career-best 3.80-seconds pass at 196.59 mph to earn the provisional  number-one qualifying position in Pro Extreme June 6, at the 4th annual ADRL Pizza Hut Summer Drags at Knoll Gas Motorsports Park at U.S. 131 in Martin, Michigan.  Following Stanton on the list are Joshua Hernandez, Travis Swearingen,
Bil Clanton and Canadian Ray Commisso in his first ADRL appearance, while defending series champion and current record holder Jason Scruggs is sixth in the race debut of his new 2006 Dodge Stratus.

Stanton's class-leading, eighth-mile effort came after his team executed an engine change in his '63 Corvette during a lengthy rain delay that cut short Friday's scheduled test session. He is cautiously optimistic the time will hold up through two more qualifying sessions on Saturday before eliminations begin mid-afternoon.

Harper1.jpg
Billy Harper continued his torrid pace in Michigan. The Paducah, Ky.-based driver established a new Pro Nitrous record at the last event in Valdosta.
"It's going to be rough to beat that in the heat we're expecting tomorrow," the 2006 Pro extreme champ said. "But anything's possible; no run is safe with the guys we're racing out here."

In Pro Nitrous, Paducah, Kentucky's Billy Harper continued where he left off at the previous ADRL national event a month earlier in Georgia, where he established a new class E.T. record of 3.91 seconds. Harper seized the provisional pole in Michigan with a 3.94-seconds pass at 186.71 mph in his 2001 Dodge Viper. Texan Doug Riesterer is second at four-seconds-flat, followed by Jim Halsey, Brad Personett in a turbocharged entry, and Ohio's David Roemer.

Wilson1.jpg
Michelle Wilson threw down the Outlaw 10.5 gauntlet in the first pair and the run stood as the best.
After a second rain delay, Michelle Wilson was in the first pair down the track in Extreme 10.5 qualifying and posted a 4.85 at just 112.01 mph that takes her into Saturday as the first-round leader. The Azle, Texas-based racer said she's surprised to be on top after battling an ill-handling race car at the top end of the track. "I had to lift when it got loose," she said. "I hope to go a lot quicker and faster tomorrow, and still stay in the number-one position." Wilson's husband, H.T. Wilson, is second, with Brent Rau third so far in his ADRL debut.

In just his second ADRL Pro Extreme Motorcycle event Matt Prophit leads qualifying after one round with a 4.31-seconds pass at 165.86 mph aboard his '07 Suzuki. Defending class champ Billy Vose is second after going just six-ten thousandths slower, followed by Prophit's brother and team owner, Charlie Prophit, Darian Guillory and Mimmo Marciano. Like Wilson, Prophit was unimpressed with his number-one status and expects several bikes to improve their times on Saturday.

"It all depends on the weather, though," he said. "But no matter what, we're going to put more in it. We've got two more passes to work with."

Qualifying for the 4th annual ADRL Pizza Hut Summer Drags resumes at noon on Saturday, with a second qualifying session set for 2 p.m. and elimination rounds scheduled to begin at 4 p.m

RAIN DELAYED

GLIDDEN RACING XTREME 10.5 IN MARTIN

Veteran Pro Stock/Outlaw 10.5 racer to compete in Xtreme 10.5 competition ...

Billy Glidden will officially make his ADRL debut this weekend during the ADRL Summer Drags at the Knoll Gas Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan.

Glidden will be competing with the familiar silver Pontiac GTO sponsored by Mickey Thompson Tires and used primarily as a test car for the tire manufacturer. Glidden has run the car in NHRA Pro Stock as well.

He tested the Pontiac earlier this weekend and scored a series of 4.3-second laps with a 4.32 best.

"We went to the ADRL event in Montgomery last year with the new Mustang and made a time run, but it started raining and that was all we got in," Glidden said. "I think if I can go into the 4.30s we can give them a run for the money."

Glidden's next tire test with Mickey Thompson Tires will be in two weeks in Indianapolis.

ADRL BRINGS UNIQUE EVENT TO WESTERN MICHIGAN

M4_Scruggs.jpg

M4_Hancock.jpgDrag racing fans in Western Michigan are in for a rare treat June 6-7, as the Flowmaster American Drag Racing League (ADRL) presented by the National Guard visits Knoll Gas Motorsports Park at U.S. 131 in Martin, Michigan for the first time with its 4th annual ADRL Pizza Hut Summer Drags. The ADRL features racers from across the country in four professional classes—Pro Extreme, Pro Nitrous, Extreme 10.5 and Pro Extreme Motorcycle—competing in thrilling eighth-mile, head-to-head action.

With most ADRL racers never having competed before in Michigan, this will be the introduction of a new kind of drag racing to the region. ADRL competition is an all-pro-show with no filler classes, which translates to a quick-paced and entertaining day of drag racing. The stars of the ADRL are friendly, approachable and eager to visit with fans and pit access is included with all event tickets, which incidentally, are provided to the Western Michigan community almost entirely free of charge thanks to ADRL sponsors Pizza Hut, Flowmaster and the National Guard.

M4_Gorman.jpg On the track, Texas driver Joshua Hernandez will be looking to extend his points lead in the supercharged Pro Extreme class after winning both ADRL races contested so far this year. Also certain to be vying for the Martin win will be defending ADRL world champion Jason Scruggs, who at Rockingham, NC, last year became the first doorslammer driver ever to exceed 200 miles per hour over an eighth mile. Scruggs also holds the Pro Extreme elapsed time record of an incredible 3.70 seconds and increased his speed record to an unreal 205.47 mph at the 2008 season opener in Houston.

Other top challengers include 2006 Pro Extreme champ Bubba Stanton, young gun Travis Swearingen, Texas veteran Frankie “Madman” Taylor and Michigan native Bob Mandell, who is featured in the current issue of Adrenaline, official magazine of the ADRL, and available at the Martin event.

Fresh off his career-first ADRL win and lowering the elapsed time record to a brilliant 3.91 seconds last month at Valdosta, Georgia, former Kentucky gubernatorial candidate Billy Harper leads the Pro Nitrous contingent into Michigan. Points leader and Harper teammate Dennis Radford also will pose a threat to win, as will Maryland’s Jim Halsey, who tasted victory at two of the last four ADRL national events.

M4_Vose.jpg They will be fending off the likes of 2006 class champ Keith Baker, Shannon “The Iceman” Jenkins and 18-year-old reigning champion Jamie Hancock, who became the youngest driver ever to win a major drag racing world championship last year. Additionally, New Hudson, Michigan’s Harold Martin will pilot the second National Guard entry in Pro Nitrous trim.

ADRL created and debuted its Extreme 10.5 class last season, featuring cars with no powerplant or weight limitations, but running on relatively narrow 10.5-inch-wide rear slicks. After successfully defending his event title in his native Georgia, points leader Mike Hill will be hoping to continue the momentum up north. However, current class champion Steve Gorman, who won at Houston in March, will provide stiff competition alongside new elapsed-time record holder Steve Kirk Jr., Texan Todd Moyer and Michelle Wilson, the only woman competing full-time with the ADRL.

Pro Extreme Motorcycle also was added to the ADRL mix last year, but so far has not seen any repeat winners. Top contenders like inaugural class champion Billy Vose, Georgia winner Coodee Thomas and Houston winner Ron Procopio certainly hope to change that stat in Michigan. Regardless of the race outcome, these fearless riders on their nitrous-assisted bikes promise to thrill the Martin crowd with wild, side-by-side, wheels-up action.

With ideal-for-racing weather forecast for Western Michigan this weekend, the 4th annual Pizza Hut Summer Drags at Knoll Gas Motorsports Park at U.S. 131 is shaping up to be another record-setting ADRL national event.
