NMCA/NMRA SUPER BOWL OF STREET LEGAL DRAG RACING, CHICAGO, ILL.

The NMRA-NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing concluded at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL on Sunday evening with spectacular racing through the final rounds of eliminations. The action concluded with Team NMCA earning overall Super Bowl honors in defeating Team NMRA for the Nitto Tires Diamond Tree Ring.  Here are some highlights.

EVENT IN PHOTOS

Kevin Fiscus’ weekend began on a low note with a position at the bottom of the NMCA Pro Mod qualifying order.  By Sunday evening the Fiskus-Klugger Racing team was in the Winner’s Circle hoisting the class trophy for the final round victory over Tim Savell. Fiscus then went on to defeat NMRA’s Phil Hines in their Super Bowl Match race, earning NMCA a Diamond Tree Ring.
Radial Wars points leader Dewayne Mills was another driver that doubled up at the Super Bowl. He went through Greg Powrie and Daniel Pharris before meeting and defeating Mark Mickie in the final, 3.973 at 198.50 to Mickie’s 4.050 at 200.98. Mills then won his Super Bowl match over NMRA Renegade winner Aaron Bates, which tipped the balance in Team NMRA's favor.
At the Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing, NMRA and NMCA combine their respective small tire 1/8th mile Street Outlaw class competitors. This translates into a larger field with tougher competition. NMCA’s Jacky McCarty earned the victory over NMRA’s Charles Hull in class and the Super Bowl rematch.
Steven Graham drove to the Pro Stock win in Bob Book’s Pontiac over Australia’s Nino Cavallo and his Dodge. Graham’s .012 RT was the deciding factor as Cavallo’s quicker but losing 7.011 wasn’t enough to overcome a .058 starting line deficit. Graham posted a 7.032 ET at 196.04 MPH. NMCA's 400 inch Pro Stock becomes a full ledged class in 2017. Something to watch for.
Aaron Bates (near lane) qualified third in NMCA Renegade and faced Number 1 Qualifier Adam Arndt in the final. Bates' time slip showed a .012 RT and 7.559 ET at 183.69 MPH, too much for Arndt's .100/7.620/180.67 to overcome.
The NMCA Factory Super Car final came down to two brand new 2016 Cobra Jet Mustangs, with Kevin Skinner's (near) 8.308 at 160.73 defeating Chuck Watson 8.401 at 160.35 MPH .

Abbreviated due to Friday’s challenging weather conditions, qualifying resumed for the NMRA-NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL on Saturday.

Heads-up classes had to make the most of one less session to improve. Few of them saw a change in top qualifier, but among those that did Pro Mod was the most notable. Randy Adler and the bright orange blown ’57 Chevy posted a 3.825, pushing Billy Banaka down to the 2nd spot.

Evening brought the first round of eliminations, which will resume at 9 AM Sunday morning.

Dwayne Barbaree was uncharacteristically at the bottom of the Street Outlaw sheet after Q1. He put his Mustang to the top on Saturday morning, the drew a bye in Round 1 of eliminations.
Dave Granger moved up to 5th on the Top Sportsman ladder, but had the misfortune of backfiring the scoop off his Henry J in Round 1 of eliminations.
Pro Mod’s Kevin Fiscus drew Top Qualifier Randy Adler in Round 1, and pulled off a stunning upset. He ran 3.856 at 207.99 MPH to Adler’s 3.919.
Merv Moyer Jr. drives Leonard Long’s Mustang in the newly formed Pro Stock class. His stellar .039 RT wasn’t enough to overcome the power of Bob Book’s Steven Graham driven Pontiac however. Graham ran 7.076 to Moyer’s 7.470.
Moving up to the Number 1 qualifying position in session 2, Dewayne Mills in the Golden Gorilla powers past Greg Powrie in the first round of eliminations.
Doug Duall and the “Drag’n Wag’n” hung on as #1 qualifier in Nostalgia Super Stock and advanced in Round 1 of eliminations.
TV star Chris “BoostedGT” Hamilton fades as accomplished Chicago area grudge racer “The Grinch” pours the nitrous on in their match race.

FRIDAY NOTEBOOK -

The NMRA-NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing returned to Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, IL for the 11th time this weekend with new classes, some new formatting, and some new drivers and cars.

One thing that wasn’t new was the unpredictable summer weather here in Joliet. The day began under sunny skies with elevated temps and humidity, so it was no surprise that as qualifying session 2 was just getting under way the gathering clouds opened up. Index class qualifying was eventually completed after numerous delays, with Q3 scheduled for 9 AM, and the Heads-up classes taking their 2nd shot at 11AM Saturday morning.

Billy Banaka and his Camaro are #1 in Pro Mod at the moment.

Chuck Watson got a good look at the sky through the windshield of his 2016 Cobra Jet. He is qualified #2 in NMCA Factory Super Car after 1 session.
Johnny “Lightning” Wiker ran a 9.255 second ET in qualifying session 1 in his NMRA Truck and Lightning entry.
Keith Barry proved the hot track was hookin’ when he carried the front wheels over 150’ on his way to the number 1 position with a 4.310 1/8th mile ET.
Benjamin Board’s Procharged small block Camaro showed its strength by going to the top of the list in Top Sportsman.
Doug Duall’s “Drag’n Wag’n” flies in Nostalgia SuperStock. Definitely not a National Lampoon “Vacation” type of vehicle.
This is Craig Sullivan sports a “distressed look” wrap on his Plymouth Superbird Pro Mod, a look that that appears to be a growing trend.
