Can’t we all just get along? Tensions have been running as high as revs lately in NHRA. I guess it’s to be expected considering the season has included: Two alcohol class driver fatalities, a spectator killed, a couple of Pro Stock track issues, and an economy sputtering like a Funny Car on six cylinders. “I see the fighting on the starting line,” John Force said to me after the event that was anything but Speechless in Seattle. “I know they’re frustrated -- some Pro Stock guys and Warren Johnson’s statements about Ray Charles (being able to see bumps). He made a lot of people mad (Bob Tasca III and Jim Head, to name two), but he didn’t mean it that way.

With some time off since the last NHRA event in Denver, Rodger Brogdon, Michael Phillips and Craig Treble have solidified the Attitude Apparel / Racers Edge team and are looking at this week’s event in Brainerd, Minnesota to lock down their respective spots in NHRA’s Countdown to One.
For Brogdon the Lucas Oil Nationals offers the opportunity to clinch a top 10 berth in only his second full season of Pro Stock racing. “We weren’t firing on all cylinders as a team early in the season,” said Rodger, “and we made some major changes in the middle of the busiest part of the schedule. Now that we’ve had some time to get some much needed testing in we’re looking forward to this week’s race and solidifying our shot at a championship. We’ve run as well as anyone else at times this year, now it's time to do it consistently.”
Brogdon is currently tenth in the point standings and both he and the team will be focused on out performing their two closest competitors for the final spot in the Countdown. Both Kurt Johnson and Bob Yonke would need to reach the semi-finals to have a shot at taking away the opportunity to run for the championship from the Pistonator.
Team member and Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Michael Phillips will be on board his Racers Edge Suzuki and will be teamed up for the rest of the year with Craig Treble, who signed on with the team at Denver and will ride the Attitude Apparel Suzuki for at least the remainder of the season.
“Michael and I are both stoked with about the opportunity that Rodger has given us,” said Treble. “For the race this weekend we’ll have my bike officially wrapped in Attitude Apparel colors and will most likely be running the engine that Michael has won three races with this year. We’ve got a new engine on order that might be ready, but if not I’ll have that engine and Michael will be running the engine he won with at Memphis last year, updated & freshened for this event.”
“Our goal this weekend,” added Phillips, “is to lock down Craig’s spot in the countdown, qualify #1 and #2 and meet in the finals. Together we’ll work our tails off to get Treble into the Countdown, but I’ve already told him that when we get to the finals ‘There are no friends when the helmet is on’ and he better be ready to get his butt whipped,” to which Treble laughed and told Phillips, “don’t forget that I’ll have the good motor this weekend.”
“Brainerd is always a fun race,” added Brogdon. “The fans there are knowledgeable yet laid back and there to have a good time, and I believe everyone on the Pistonator team will be enjoying themselves just as much come Sunday night.” |

While much of the focus this past weekend was on the huge Nitro Jam in southern Maryland, just two hours south in the heart of downtown Richmond the state of Virginia was also gearing up for its chance to host the nation’s most exciting motorsports event as local officials rolled out the red carpet and welcomed Nitro Jam back to Virginia in anticipation of the Nitro Jam World Finals at Virginia Motorsports Park in October. This past Friday drivers, media members, state representatives and a few special guests gathered at the James Center in downtown Richmond to celebrate the return of Nitro Jam to Virginia with a special press conference hosted by track General Manager Bryan Pierce and several Nitro Jam representatives.
