AYERS, FELT, CARTER TOP LIST OF NMCA SEASON-OPENER CHAMPIONS

Drivers came from across the country to put the hammer down at the Whipple Superchargers NMCA Muscle Car Mayhem presented by Holbrook Racing Engines, March 18-21 at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Florida. As they pumped out horsepower on the well-prepped stage, the performances were show-stopping, and the ambition and aggressiveness was all-out. Awaiting those able to go all the way at the series’ first of six races this season was the celebratory NMCA Winner’s Circle.

In the very robust VP Racing Lubricants Xtreme Pro Mod category, the full field of 16 drivers ran between 3.63 and 3.80 in qualifying, and Randy Weatherford wheeled to a 3.63 to lead the pack. But the final round belonged to Shawn Ayers and Todd Tutterow, and Ayers worked for the win with a 3.58 over Tutterow, who was forced to lift to a 4.32.

JOE SANTANGELO CLAIMS MICKEY THOMPSON $40K PRIZE TO ROUND OUT SOUTHERN SPORTSMAN SHOWDOWN

When inclement weather moved into the Sunday forecast for the Johnson's Horsepower Garage Southern Sportsman Showdown, the race organizers made the command decision to combine the cash prizes of the two remaining events and set up one race for Saturday in which the winner would take all.

That's a lot of pressure for racers who thought they were going to have two chances to win the Mickey Thompson Performance Wheels and Tires $20,000 races, but for Joe Santangelo, obstacles were becoming the norm anyway in relation to the weekend, and he managed the change with both finesse and dedication to the reason he came to South Georgia Motorsports Park. He came to win, and that he did.

In the final round, second-generation racer Santangelo was a crisp .007 at the starting line and came out on the winning end of a double breakout with Michael Brand.

JOEL WARREN CLAIMS $50K AT HOLLEY 64-CAR SHOOTOUT

The most highly anticipated portion of the Johnson's Horsepower Garage Southern Sportsman Showdown was unquestionably the Holley Performance $50,000 64-Car Shootout, and every Stock and Super Stock driver on the property at South Georgia Motorsports Park (SGMP) knew that winning would come with massive bragging rights – along with the whopping check and a beautifully crafted trophy. Joel Warren was up for the challenge and dove right in, knocking out some of the best in the business to take home the biggest prize of the weekend.

Super Stock racer Warren, of Clinton, N.C., masterfully wheeled his SS/HA '98 Pontiac Firebird to a final round meeting with heavy-hitter Britt Cummings, who was a touch too efficient in getting to the finish line and broke out. Warren launched with a .034-second reaction time and put together a 9.604-second pass at 123.00 mph on his 9.57 dial to get the win over a .031 and breakout 9.889, 129.98 on a 9.89.

"I've been looking forward to this race for months," Warren said. "This was a blast. I knew with Jason [Line], Bo [Butner], and Dave [Connolly], this was a race I wasn't going to miss."
