ENCORE: THE DAY THE SPORTSMAN RACERS FOUGHT BACK

1-14-07-standingup.jpgThere's nothing more prestigious than winning Top Fuel at the NHRA U.S. Nationals, and that's exactly what inspired a group of sportsman racers to use the first round of eliminations as a protest platform. No sportsman division had dared to stand up to the seemingly invincible sanctioning body, not to mention during their flagship national event. There's always a first time for everything, however, and in 1981 a group of disgruntled sportsman racers took the NHRA to task in front of their paying customers.

This makeshift group of sportsman racers had been rumor fodder in the pits for a few months prior to the event, yet when they confronted the sanctioning body the issue was always sidestepped. On Labor Day weekend in 1981 they took the unprecedented step of airing their concerns before one of the largest crowds of the year. After all, they had nothing to lose.

CARLSON MAKING THE MOST OF NHRA TOP DRAGSTER OPPORTUNITY

You couldn't exactly describe Ryan Carlson as an unknown in the world of Top Dragster. The Maple Valley, Wash., resident has been quite a force in NHRA's Northwest Division, but this year, "Rotten Ryan" came out with guns blazing on a much larger scale, and now everybody in the category knows his name.

Carlson, who was christened "Rotten Ryan" by a family friend when he was just a small child, has been living up to his moniker in Division 6 by regularly sending competitors home early and empty-handed. His first divisional win was in Super Street in 2002, and for more than a decade, he's been concentrated on the fierce Top Dragster category. Carlson has claimed at least one victory in each season contested since 2016, and after back-to-back years in which he finished No. 3 in the division standings, he felt that the time was right to take it up a notch.

KYLE RIZZOLI HAS MASTERED THE BOTTOM BULB

Like a lot of the younger generation of racers today, Kyle Rizzoli literally grew up in the sport, shadowing his parents, Jim and Kay, as they travelled the west coast racing an alcohol dragster amongst other things. In fact, young Kyle’s first trip at the age of six-weeks old to the drags was the final day of the famous Orange County International Raceway on October 30, 1983. The elder Rizzoli has been a multi-time division champion along with a JEGS All Star champion, currently a tuning consultant for a number of A/Fuel dragsters. Needless to say, Kyle has been an integral part of the sport since birth.

Not only is his rise through the sport been part of his life, his younger age brings about some unique thoughts and aspects of sportsman drag racing.

With a younger sister Karen, Kyle and his sister graduated up through the ranks of Jr. Dragsters and together learned somewhat of the intricacies of bracket racing. During that period, there weren’t many instances where the Rizzoli offspring weren’t with their parents. In the early ‘90s, Jim decided to stop racing the alcohol car and focus on the juniors. “I always like to say that my sister is really the better racer than I am,” says Kyle laughingly, “and if you look at our records against one another, she was always crushing me.”
