AUSTRALIA'S WILLOWBANK LAUNCHES NEW EIGHTH MILE SERIES

Willowbank Raceway, in conjunction with John Winterburn, is delighted to announce details for the new Nitro Street and Strip Magazine, South Queensland Eighth Mile Drag Racing Series.

Taking in the eighth-mile drag strips – Warwick Dragway and Ironbark Raceway– as well as Benaraby Dragway and Willowbank Raceway utilising the eighth mile distance, the new series will provide a three-round plus a final series for sportsman racers from March to September in 2010.

Retired Willowbank Raceway President John Winterburn is the driving force behind the project, which is designed to open up extra opportunities for sportsman racers and the regional dragways alike.

“I have thought about an Eighth Mile Sportsman series for some time but never had the time to devote to it, however now that I have sold Travelaire Tours and retired I have been able to give the project the time it needed to bring it all together,” said Winterburn.

“During the early days of racing we all had such a good time travelling to regional tracks, so I thought it would be a good idea and something the racers would get behind, and after talking to the operators of Roma, Warwick and Benaraby and receiving such a good response it was clear we had a base for action in place.

“Now with Nitro Street and Strip Magazine on board as the major sponsor it is full steam ahead, and hopefully the series will give Sportsman Racers another opportunity to race at the various regional tracks over the eighth mile, while also providing those tracks another big event to promote and assist in bringing more racers to their tracks”

Modified, Super Sedan, Super Street, Modified Bike, Junior Dragster and Classic categories will be eligible to run during the series, which will kick off with its first round at Warwick on the 13th of March 2010.

Round Two will take place on the 15th of May at Ironbark before the third round gets underway at Willowbank Raceway on the 3rd of July. A Grand Final round will then be run at Benaraby Dragway on the 25th of September 2010. The Grand Final will be hosted by each track on a rotational basis year by year.

Special Winner and Runner-Up trophies will be available for each bracket at each round, with the Grand Finals will see a special Winner trophy plus $750 prize money awarded to the highest point scorer of each bracket, and a special Runner-Up trophy and $250 go to the second highest point scorer of each bracket.
