The reigning world champ ran a 6.638-second time at 206.99 mph to take the top qualifying spot at the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Summer Nationals. The time and the mph were both Heartland Park track records.

“We made a great run tonight, it was just awesome,” Edwards said. “I’m really happy with my guys. I guess anytime you can hold a (track) record that’s good. Qualifying No. 1 is more important than the track record for sure, if we can hold on to it. I was really pleased with my guys tonight and we will see what happens Saturday.”

Edwards came to Topeka with 830 points, 255 more than second place Allen Johnson. Edwards has four wins this season and one runner-up finish. If Edwards keeps the pole position, it would be his seventh of the season, 29th of his career and second at Topeka. Johnson is second in the qualifying ladder at 6.656 seconds.

Despite his stellar performance, Edwards isn’t taking anything for granted.

“We’ve ran really well, but we do not feel like we quite where we were last year,” Edwards said. “We’re running good, do not get me wrong, but I feel like we're just a little off, just a little bit, in a couple of places.”
