ENGINE WOES KEEP BUSCH OFF THE DRAG STRIP

Faced with question after question concerning the NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase for the Championship, Kurt Busch smiled broadly when asked about his drag racing endeavors. And, then he frowned.

“We haven't been back to the drag strip since April,” said Busch, a bit of sadness in his voice. “We've battled some engine problems and I just haven't been able to work in another race.

“We're not totally disappointed. We got into the 9-second zone, which was our goal. Now we are looking at the 8-second zone.”

Busch would love to get back behind the wheel of his Dodge this year and roar down the quarter-mile, but until the Chase is over he just doesn't have the time. There was a possibility of attending an event in Gainesville later this year, but it's the same weekend as Texas and just can't be worked into the schedule.

While timing remains an issue, Busch alluded to something happening in the NHRA next year which would allow him more opportunities to climb behind the wheel of his straight-liner. He hinted it has something to do with the new NHRA Unleashed program which has proved very successful.

As far as climbing into the seat of a Top Fuel or Funny Car, Busch says no thanks, unlike Tony Stewart who says he is committed to making a pass in a Don Schumacher Racing car.

“What I really like is the Pro Stock cars,” said Busch. “Now if Mike Edwards or Jason Line or someone like that offered to let me drive one, I would have to think very seriously about doing it.”

Who knows, sometime this winter we might 'not see' Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch taking some major passes in something other than a stock car.
